GoGo Penguin: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Sept. 14, 2018 | Colin Marshall -- During his setup, GoGo Penguin's pianist Chris Illingworth asked if he could remove our piano cover to "access the inside" and, after a few rotations of a screwdriver, he soon handed me a long plank of black painted maple, which has no convenient place to rest in the NPR Music office. If you look closely at the piano innards during "Bardo," you can see a strip of black tape stretched over a few strings, opposite Illingworth's bobbing head. It mutes a group of strings, turning them into percussive jabs and dividing the instrument into more explicit rhythmic and melodic sections. What you can't see: GoGo Penguin's audio engineer a few feet to the left of frame, dialing-in reverb effects on the piano, which we heard in the room. These two elements, in tandem with bassist Nick Blacka's precise canvasing and drummer Rob Turner's charged and delicate pulse, have heavily contributed to the sonic identity of this trio - a signal to jazz jukebox listeners that, "Ah yes, that's a GoGo Penguin tune."
GoGo Penguin models closely the leaderless jazz power trio set in motion by forbearers in The Bad Plus, but you can also hear the drippings of electronica groups like Bonobo, and drum-and-bass foundations akin to Roni Size with a bit more acoustic rattle (Turner even fashions his own prepared drum accessories from rope, duct tape, and metal rings, which you can see resting atop his ride cymbal and snare. He tells me he usually has more, but he hasn't made new ones in a while).
But dissecting this music belabors what's certain: this trio has become a reference point of their own for new school instrumentalists, a coveted achievement for any jazz group, though their appeal stretches far outside the jazz ecosystem. In fact, in 2018 alone, the band played some of the world's most notable pop festivals like Bonnaroo and Outside Lands and top-tier international jazz festivals: Montreal and North Sea. This trio found a way to wedge themselves in the middle of the Venn diagram that overlaps musicians and music heads. Among my colleagues at NPR, I witnessed expressions ranging from studious squints to closed-eye meditation, those in the room experiencing GoGo Penguin's tunes like they would a collage: the fine details as valuable as the larger shape.

I discovered this band along Mammal Hands and Portico Quartet, my life has changed for the better, I shaved, found work and girl. I lost my anxiety and depressive states, it's a miracle!
Great buddy ! Keep going ❤
Good stuff, I listen to this music while working on building site, brings me peace and enjoyment of living
Thanks for the suggestion of Mammal Hands. Very good. Have you listened to Fazer?
Love those too
What a trifecta of incredible bands
one of the best decisions of my life was clicking on this video
Chears
😂couldn’t agree more!🎉
Now we just need gogo penguin to somehow compose a jazz ost for a souls game.
Protect the drummer at all cost. That dude its pure gold!
He left the band about a year ago…
oh man, focusing on just him and hearing to these songs again for the first time
Least fav part…
looks like 3 guys from a laptop repair shop takin a short break from work
lol
Why you think they got a song called window?
bro they just fixed my iPhone last week!
Tiny Tech Concert
took a short break to tear it up
Play this for your children before they go to bed, and they will grow up to be nice people!
I can't imagine going to sleep with this on. Ha
I'm doing that right now, and man I hope you're right!
probably grow up to be jason bourne.
Cole 😆
Finally! Someone combining the emotional sentiment of electronica with the musical sophistication of jazz! This is going straight to heavy rotation.
If I was a filmmaker I would call these guys to do my soundtrack and themes for the movie.
they actually made a soundtrack to a visual masterpiece...look for Koyaanisqatsi - have seen them playing it live in Hamburg, what a concert!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koyaanisqatsi#Music
WIkipedia doesn't agree with you ;P
wikipedia also says, that people came from apes .o) www.elbphilharmonie.de/de/programm/koyaanisqatsi-gogo-penguin/8350
De Ee They didn't compose that though. Philip Glass did.
They made a brand new score for it, I believe. Dunno if score is the word but I said it
This is it. The day has come. My favourite jazz band is at NPR and I was not prepared for how good this was.
Same here, bro. People need to know how good these guys are.
A bit like watching your kid grow up and go to college though.
for real... digging the new album. Rob Turner is life
IN ITALIANO : PER UN GRUPPO COSI' VALE LA PENA MIGLIORARE LA PREPARAZIONE (FOR NEXT HAPPENING)
Can't wait for the DJ Shadow re- mix
The sound engineering work here is phenomenal. Bravo.
I know right, when I first listened to this, I switched to my Spotify for the upright bass, turned out its more profound in this version
You're so right, dude. Better than the album records. This "sound taker" should be proud of his work.
IS NO COMPRESSION ALL WHAT YOU NEED
@@_richardleonit's not only about no compression, the phases are impeccable, there's as little effects as possible because the microphone are so well placed. Also he's using mkh series which is usually used for classical records, hence the very natural acoustic sound of tiny desks
Wow! This is what tiny desk is about. I had never heard of this group. Fantastic performance. You got a new fan today go go penguin.
Matt Schmitt SAME
Mercury Music Prize in 2014 with the V2.0 album which I recommend to you guys... Those musicians are not anyone, truly something special about them. You can also buy the last album "A humdrum star" eyes shut, you won't be disappointed ! Absolute quality out there.
I randomly stumbled upon this jazz trio. And when i say they are one of the best of all time. Magical.
Just discovered this group today via CZcams music. Had to see them perform. So much going on with just three instruments. Amazing!!
I’d never heard of this band. Absolutely beautiful & so pure, felt really moved, so much so that I only got through a third of first tune and immediately ordered their album !!! Hurriedly returned and was enthralled. Felt like I’d been waiting for this all my life ! Thankyou Go Go Penguin and thankyou NPR. From an incredibly grateful 68 year old, Liverpool, NW England ! x
Marion Meikle greets from a 60 year old whos just hearin this first time - just great
Marion Meikle yeah they're not bad, bearing in mind they're from the wrong end of the East Lancs Road!!
Marion. Manc and London May 2023. Thundercat Pianist mmmmm
The way they play, is like each instrument is jamming out doing it's own thing while complementing each other at the same time Amazing!
I'm no jazz expert but.... isn't that generally what much or certain jazz is about? ;-)
@@yippee2000 I wouldn't know, because I'm no a Jazz expert neither 😅
@@yippee2000 Haha, my first thought upon reading that too. Reggae Mortis, if you like this style but want to experience it in a less traditional format, have a listen to some math rock. Bands like Toe, Covet, TTNG and Tricot could be right up your alley.
welcome to jazz land
@@osidiusemphatic3505 yeah dude, I dont listen to alot of Mathrock but I like a few bands like The Number twelve Looks like you, The Fall of Troy, The Locust, and The sound of Animals fighting. I'll have to check out those bands you mentioned.
I was convinced the pianist used a delay effect, but here Chris is proving me wrong with his phenomenal control over the piano.
Infact the whole band has amazing talent - their technique is beyond impeccable and so creative!
Much love for this band ❤
I was amazed at how he makes that sound by piano! The secret is the tape. He sticks tape on piano body so that he can make that kind of sound.
I thought the same, too. I had to watch a live performance of “Unspeakable World” to make sure he wasn’t using some sort of effect or backing track. He literally plays three things at once lol
Here I am after a year, after a year when GoGo Penguin were my top artist on Spotify. It all started because of this video. The mixing here is simply incredible, the piano and bass sounds better than on their albums.
SAME
Agreed - all of their live recordings sound better than their studio albums. Kind of wish they'd release a full Live album (there is an EP of a live session at Abbey Road Studios coming out at the end of November 2020)
Still same
NPR IS SIMPLY THE BEST. I NEVER THOUGHT I'D SEE GOGO PENGUIN ON HERE. KEEP IT UP, GUYS
The (very) best IS on NPR, and obviously Gogo Penguin is, therefore ;-)
They should bring toe on sometime.
Wow, these guys are so talented! The drummer blew me away.
You’d love the drummer from Emancipator and Tycho
*I like their sound. Dude on the piano got the full effect with the uncovered piano.*
CZcams made me discover Gogo Penguin a year and a half ago, I love the bass and the drum that goes so fast while the piano continues to lull us softtly... Not to mention the reverb, which plunges us into an unreal places... Good job guys
i discovered them at barnes and nobles using shazam thank god for shazam😂😂
00:00 Raven
05:19 Bardo
11:39 Window
I could tell from the very first piano chord that this was going to be something special.
I haven't been this in awe by a band since I first heard Vulfpeck. BLOWN AWAY.
They are only three and the sound is huge ! I love it !
And you haven't seen them live, it doubles for some reason lol
I saw them live in a small town south of spain. Spoke to them and apperently they always travel with their own sound engineer, who works with them in the studio, so that everything sounds as tight as possible. It's like they have a forth member in the shadow, really cool actually
In fact they are four with the audio engineer. But yeah that's great to hear.
I think that’s the point of most trio jazz
I thought he was somehow running his piano through delay- but its all in his fingers
Yeesss...!!! That shows such a magnificent control and range of 'touch'. His attacks are excellent. as is the rest of the Penguins'.
And no loop pedal in sight
It literally says in the description their sound guy was operating the effects
Very true... However, the sound tech applied reverb, eq, leveling, etc. But if you watch the keyboard player's hands you can clearly see that he is doing the repeated chords' sounds himself.
@@lawlesswatson5653 ahh ok
Serious chops.
Beautiful, moving compositions.
Not to mention that everyone who had a hand in making that bass sound, from the player, to the engineer, to the mixer could take the rest of their lives off and still have brought more beauty into the world than we have any right to expect from mere humans.
Damn I loved that. Thanks GGP and Tiny Desk!
Not to forget the craftsmen of those beautiful instruments and preamps and microphones. The sound is from another world!
My god the mixing is incredible on this one
I can taste sound, this sounds delicious
This mix is nothing short of phenomenal... massive props to FOH...
Love this band, drummer is just sick, what he is doing on Bardo is amazing.
I love the “bass and drum” vibe I get from the drums mixed with that beautiful piano playing and the upright holding things together with some cool riffs truly amazing stuff
It's because they're "dance music inspired jazz".
They're definitely big fans of drum and bass electronic music and you can easily tell.
wow...that's definitely my top discovery for the day. why are these guys not more famous...?
they are :)
They're pretty well-known in the UK jazz scene, but probably not as familiar to American audiences, especially outside jazz listeners. That said, they're still in the early arc of their career, I'm guessing they'll be internationally famous in the next few years.
They have a huge following
They are famous...this year North Sea Jazz Festival artist as two years ago too..
Rius Rydo Blue Note released their last record
If you’re wondering where to go from here, I plead with you, listen to One Percent by them. And that entire album. These guys are geniuses.
Listen at all their music, chronologically and you can hear them evolve into who they are now.
Thanks! Will check out their whole catalogue.
Ekow Bartels-Kodwo “One Percent” and “To Drown In You” from their second album V2.0. I like all their albums but, overall, it’s still my favorite. Also, in Deluxe set of the same album, “ In Amber” is amazing.
they r amazing..
Thanks, just gave it a listen! One Percent is phenomenal!
First time, I didn't know them. I am HYPNOTIZED...
Tiny Desk Concert has exposed me to a bunch of different talented bands and artists that I otherwise wouldn't have heard. I sincerely appreciate NPR for that.
I ve seen them live, and listened carefully to their recordings (not in MP3, I have got the true record) and once again, I have to write that NPR tiny desk have THE sound. Great job to all of you, their music deserve it.
Ok this might be favorite instrumental tiny desk, which is saying A LOT. I love how dense is is without being loud, and the tone on all the instruments just sounds so good, like, it sounds like there are effects on the piano? How do you even do that live? It has this amazing dreamy tone, and the base is super present without being over powering, and the drummer is also just too dang good. What an awesome band
They have a sound guy off camera running reverb through a mixer (probably in an fx loop) on the microphones!
They put tape on the strings for the sound effects of the piano :)
Yeah that too, plus the pianist is playing like he has delay on by repeating notes quieter each time. That must be extremely hard!
Sound engineering is Ahhhh Maze Balls at this site!
Howard Spiegel they brought their own with them, but yeah every tiny desk sounds amazing so I’ve no doubt the house engineers are brilliant
Brilliant stuff, sounds so good. I love how the pianist plays the echos manually- mad lads!
The best tiny desk, they sound so tight, so rhythmic, the full spectrum of frequencies is use, they are just amazing
Just bought 2 of their albums on the back of the first 5 minutes. Splendid stuff. Thanks NPR for having such an eclectic mix of artists.
If you get to see them live. ABSOLUTELY DO IT!
This makes me feel so good. Cant stop listening cant stop smiling. Incredible musicians. Glad I discovered this.
Video starts.
"That sounds like a real piano, but the delay on it is incredible. Do they have a DJ or somethi-"
*Sees piano player is playing his own delay*
O_O
OK, I'm in.
Read the description, they also had the band's sound engineer dilaling in reverb to the piano
@@jayrose-ham8834 Yes, but reverb is not delay.
@@91pranav mm true
Unpickednick not to mute them I don’t think, just gives a more sharp sound
This comment was exactly my thoughts aswell, although I have played this record in my car for more than a year now 😍
But seriously the amount of presicion and velocity control it takes to emulate a delay like he does here, I think is greatly underestimated by a many people hearing it. Astonishing.
Mix is on point ! I love the depth of the double bass here even if I'm a bit disturbed by the few notes which seems to be slightly out of tunes (but nothing related to the mix here).
Saw them live 2 times at medium size venues and I'm glad to see them at tiny desk as small venue are by far the best one when it's about jazz ! Thank you for inviting them NPR. Keep it up
Why would anyone with life flowing through their veins thumb down on something so magnificent!
Guess out of a million listens, you have a certain percentage that don't use headphones. That is my only explanation.
@@rk41gator Even without headphones it's still amazing art
I've seen them live in Dublin, I've seen them live in Vienna, and I keep wanting more. One of the best bands to see live, you won't regret it. Thank you for the double encore at Porgy and Bess, guys. Haven't danced like that in quite some time.
When people tells me that there's no "Good Music" in this time.. I show them these guys. They are amazing their music is mind blowing, like fresh air!
I love these guys, bless NPR
The description is absolutely gold, too!
OMG i only just discovered you ( thank you algorithm ) what an amazing sound you guys make together perfect for my summer party
Thank you NPR + GoGo Penguin this was an awesome visual, audio and musical performance...each song lead me on a new journey to a different destination.
Fantastic new find for me! Thanks, as always, to NPR for your sublime gifts. As a huge post-jazz fan, this was just the refreshing new sound I’ve been after lately. Fondly reminds me of some tunes by Cinematic Orchestra and Avishai Cohen. Hoping I get to see you guys giving The Hot At Nights their own spotlight behind the desk one day.
Holy wow, I didn't expect that at all... Not everyday you stumble across something that just takes your breath away, and the next 18min you just stare at the screen in utter joy and bliss... And not everyday or pretty much almost never you go afterwards and buy every album they released. And they are worth every fucking penny...Thank you Tiny Desk to introducing me to such treasures of the music world, I would have missed otherwise completely... Go GoGo Penguin Go :)
Keep coming back to this, it's positively blistering. Superb musicianship.....!

Oh this was just amazing.
Bassist is amazing..
this is simply gorgeous, few other words yet, makes me SMILE
This recording is in many ways better than their studio recording of the same tracks. My compliments to the sound engineers responsible.
I LOVE this - AMAZING!
And I LOVE how tiny desk bring to me and expose me to such an incredible HUGE rich diversity of music/bands that I've NEVER encountered before
FABULOUS!
Thank you CZcams for the random recommendations, I now have a new favorite band
I love you Tiny desk and GoGo Penguin. I like their song Hopopono. They're awsome. Love from Korea.
Hopopono was the first song of theirs I ever heard, one day on my way to work it came on the radio :D
the dynamics on the piano are so good, the playing sounds so full and rich
Still amazed at the mic setups from Tiny Desk.
I listened live last year in Istanbul, it was amazing performance , you are my best, GoGoPenguin.. NPR is also my best !
Listened to this band a LOT but until now I never saw these guys perform. Simply amazed at how they get the sounds that I am familiar with out of these acoustic instruments. Very creative and a joy to behold! Thank very much NPR and GoGo Penguin!
Wow Wow Wow! NPR TD continues to amaze by introducing non-mainstream bands and showcase great music from around the world. GoGo will Go Go to my top 10 playlist. Thanks again NPR!
They killin it!
Since ya'll are on this tip, please get us Alfa Mist in the near future 🔥🔥
Exquisite choice! Kindly add Ibrahim Maalouf, Yolanda Brown and Sona Jobarteh to future tiny desk concerts as well. Thanx.
OH MY GOD, PLEASE!

Alfa Mist and Yussef Dayes
Can't believe I'm just now getting around to this performance, I love these guys
I will never, ever get bored of watching or listening to this.
I am truly thrilled there are a few people that sense what's correct
I will be eternally grateful to Tiny Desk for discovering this and many other amazing bands. I would love to see GoGo Penguin live to celebrate the end of this pandemic, so damaging to culture and live events. Long live NPR!

The drummer is very very good, and the music great
so excited to see gogo penguin on npr!! they are absolutely INCREDIBLE live
Full, rich sound that fills the space. Music to get lost in. Thanks so much.
This band is amazing, masters of each instrument
YESSS! Favorite Channel and favorite artist combined!
Saw them in Montreal and they are just amazing to see are each are master of their instrument. They are my favourite band now and cannot have enough of the 3 albums. Thank you NPR.
Who in the world could not like this ? Just sublime !
Never heard of them before, but became a insta fan. Awesome music!
I like these song versions more than the studio ones. The're warmer, more lively.
studio ones are colder, less spacious, and less airy
I have never heard of these guys. I am now a fan! they are terrific. All the best to GoGo Penguin!
Like listening to a story told without any pause or punctuation. One huge sentence from start to finish.
These guys are Really talented Wow. the piano guy gives me chill. Wow when they started to play the second song after Raven u can tell these guy dont play around i can truly see their passion in what they do very glad to have come across this band.
The drummer is GOD
God is the drummer 😊
They all are gods
No longer the drummer🙁
Pianist is playing 3 traces in same time
@@richardpage9502 I am super excited for his solo stuff coming up though, and the new drummer is rather solid!
Rob is definitely irreplaceable so keep an eye out for his upcoming work!
Excellent microphone placement and mixing for such a small and intimate space - really surprising how this was done.especially on the piano. And love this drummer, he truly helps to create the sonic environment.
oh my... that bass and fast drums are soo good, love this
The colors of music are so beautiful to me. Thank you for sharing these exquisite rainbows. I am ascending thru the clouds and feeling refreshed again. Coming back from each musical journey such as the stories told here by this brilliant trio recharges my soul and re-kindles a little bit of the magic wonder I used to feel as a young boy before the weight of the world began to try and squeeze it all out. Music is the closest thing I could describe as real magic. It has a subtly unique and different effect to each and every one who truly tunes in and takes flight. The power to heal a broken heart, to ease a suffering mind, to alter and enhance our lives in ways that leave us feeling better and being better to each other. I am forever grateful the musicians, Sound engineers, patrons supporting the artists,NPR and CZcams for these gifts. My journey of discovery and delight shall continue. Godbless us all with Love.

@@SKATE87410 I am having some more right now and I love it. =) Mmmmmmusic. Stay blessed my friend. It's all out there for us to find and enjoy. I will try to do a better job of giving a little more to support the younger artist that bring me delight! New decade with much to look forward too.
Wow, they are amazing, the music sounds so full even though its only 3 instruments! Definitely checking out their other stuff!
I seem to be late to the party. But I made it. Have two lps on vinyl now. Love what you do.
