  • In this video, I will show you three upgrades to make your Costco greenhouse even more effective.
    Exhaust fan by Sun Energise. 20W solar panel with 8 inch fan.
    Heater by Vivosun. 1500W portable Greenhouse heater with adjustable, digital thermostat.
    Thermometer by SunsorPush. Wireless thermometer/hygrometer.

    Definitely like your solar fan idea.
    Here are my upgrades....
    Drill a hole & put an RV power plug on the outside. Extension cord plugs into the greenhouse from the outside, and provides 2 outlets inside. Not necessary, but gives a cleaner look.
    Foam board insulation on the lower panels. That wood is thin and simply cannot retain heat. Foam board helps. (So does a smoke/fog test for the initiated, in calking up additional large air leaks)
    We use a Bio Green Palma greenhouse heater. Maintains 50+F when it's 20F outside. Looks equivalent output to the Vivosun you mention. Perfect for this size.
    Metal trim around the vent, and magnetic A/C vent cover for freezing nights.
    We ran a water line under and inside to an outside mounted spigot.
    Mounted adjustable wire shelving on the "shelfless" side. 8-10 more seed flats.
    Wetter climates would benefit from a protective stain. I think all Yardistry does is apply some color, but no actual protection.
    Mounted hooks for exterior shade cloth. I'm exceeding 100F in this abnormal FEB! weather without them.
    Use generic Zwave/Zigbbee sensors that integrate into existing Home Assistant setup.

      These are all great ideas! Particularly the idea of installing the RV power plug. That will make it much cleaner. Thanks again for the extra info, you have given me a few more ideas. Take care and happy gardening

    You are so good at this I had to subscribe to watch more of things you do. We just got our greenhouse up and now I have a couple more things to ask my hubby to do. Thank you!!!

    There definitely is not enough air circulation in this greenhouse. I baked quite a few plants to death even when the vent was open. Opening the door helped, but then squirrels would go in to see where I buried the nuts - because that's what they think I'm doing in the garden. I ended up swapping out the triangular panels in the gable ends with some stiff screen. I took the roof apart enough to slide the panels out, cut the screen the same shape as the panels, slid the screen in place, and put the roof back together. I made paneled inserts for the four triangles for when it gets colder - like little storm windows. I plan to order one of these solar fans as well - thanks for the idea! I'm still deciding if I'm ambitious enough to need a heater.

      I agree 100% with you. The ventilation in this is non existent without any upgrades. I like the idea of adding screen at the top. I might do that along with a bigger fan.

      I think you’d be fine with this heater set up. The panels do a good job of holding in the heat if you were to put a heater in there

    We bought one and the lady at the Costco checkout said she bought one and it was too large for her spot so she sold us hers at a steep discount. The goal is to leave the back wall off and make a 16’ long one.

      @TheWhiteOakHomestead  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I started working on it yesterday. All I have to do is add dados on the back wall parts on the side that is meant to be the back exterior that will turn one back wall into a center support and leave me with an entire extra back wall. I’ll end up with a 15’5” version with two doors. I may have to modify the shelves but I separated those parts and I’m not worried about that yet.

    Good upgrades . Just a sugestion I would put the fan in a high spot. Heat goes up. And you are removing the only vent that comes with the greenhouse. Thanks for sharing.

      @TheWhiteOakHomestead  Před 5 měsíci

      I totally agree with your suggestion as heat rises to the top, but unfortunately there is nowhere great to attach the fan up top. I did not want to cut out the windows. The fan does to a good job of reducing heat when it kicks on. I am going to do another video monitoring the heat when it kicks on. It surprisingly does pretty well!

    • @Sypherz

      With the fan down below, he's pulling in cooler air and the hot air will go out through the roof vent.

    • @resellerrunner5149
      @resellerrunner5149 Před 3 měsíci +2

      It looks like the fan is blowing outward though. Maybe reversed would pull in more air that will exit through the roof vent. But hey, if it works then great!

    • @TheWhiteOakHomestead
      @TheWhiteOakHomestead  Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@resellerrunner5149 Yes, the fan is blowing outward and while it does seem counter intuitive, it does lower the temperature when it runs. As the fan pushes air out it creates a vacuum inside the greenhouse, so it is sucking in fresh outside air. There wasn't an easy spot up top in the greenhouse to mount the fan but I am working on creating a bracket to hold the exhaust fan higher up. Will post that video when complete.

      @TheWhiteOakHomestead  Před 3 měsíci +1

      You got that right, congrats! Unfortunately there isn't an easy way to mount the exhaust fan higher up in the greenhouse. However, this method does reduce the temp inside when it runs by pulling in air from outside as it pushes air out. I am working on creating a custom mount to hold the exhaust fan higher up in the greenhouse and I will be sure to post that video.

    I’m ordering that heater now!

    • @TheWhiteOakHomestead
      @TheWhiteOakHomestead  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Yes, the fan helps a lot. Whenever the sun hits the solar panel it turns the fan on and does a decent job of cooling it down. I’m going to move the fan to the top though. I just need to make a bracket for it. I’ll make another video on that when I get it finished.I think it would be even more effective.

    Off topic question: did you caulk only the outside of the panels, or also the inside?

      @TheWhiteOakHomestead  Před 4 měsíci +1

      You’re welcome! I caulked the inside and outside. I believe it is mandatory so when you’re spraying water inside it doesn’t get down in between the panels and wood to prevent any rot.

    This is the video I was looking for! We are just setting ours up and it’s still 20-30s at nighttime so we are worried about heating it up. What temp do you keep it at during the winter vs the summer?

    • @TheWhiteOakHomestead
      @TheWhiteOakHomestead  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Glad it helped! During the winter we set the thermostat on the heater around 40-45 degrees F and that works great for us. It also depends on what you’re growing in the greenhouse. I like to stick with cold weather veggies during the winter, like spinach, broccoli, kale and all the lettuces. If you have things like tomatoes or squash, you will want to keep it warmer, around 50-55 at night

  • @silverlobsterfarm
    @silverlobsterfarm Před 4 měsíci +1

    So a couple of questions for you. Did you start those seedlings in there without any night time heat? How cold is too cold and how hot is too hot to create the disaster you talked about with your plants dying?

    • @TheWhiteOakHomestead
      @TheWhiteOakHomestead  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hi there! Yes, we started these in the greenhouse but we live in central Virginia and this has been the most mild winter we can remember. The seedlings we have in the greenhouse now are all good cold weather plants, but they do not like anything below freezing. It’s gone down to around 35 degrees F and they still did ok. It really depends on what you’re growing when determining what is too cold. Things like lettuce, kale, spinach, broccoli, peas do really well in cold weather. If they’re in the ground you can always use the frost blankets if it goes below freezing at night and they will do just fine.

    Does your modifications lower the temperature in the greenhouse end summertime temperatures enough to grow small quantities of vegetables inside strawberries, herbs, etcetera. I live in Montana and have just about completed the same greenhouse from Costco yesterday it was 95 even with the door off and then open it got 115° in there, definitely not doable unless you're interested in sitting inside and using it as a dry sauna.

    Is the low vent exhaust fan counter-intuitive? Isn’t the design set up for airflow coming in low and exiting high?
    Curious to see how this works out for you. Thanks for the tips!
