  • The war in Ukraine has led NATO to re-evaluate security, especially on its eastern flank with Russia. Germany's recent announcement of a permanent troop deployment there - the first of its kind since the second world war - is just one such change.

The UK, France and Finland seem to be the only Western European (if one can even use that term nowadays) who take their defences seriously. And both the UK and France want to have things their own way. Germany seems to finally build up, but it's gonna be a slow, slow, slow process. So, it's not like "the USA will handle the defense in our stead", but rather "the USA is wasting so much money in the military, we will spend the money elsewhere". Countries bordering Russia thought otherwise, however. Finland, for example, has now also relatively speaking a more powerful military than ever before. It's partially thanks to some other countries letting go of their military capability and selling even modern equipment to anyone willing to buy, believing it would never be needed again. That's how Finland built its Leopard 2 fleet.

Corruption and incompetence at all levels of command, an alarming lack of maintenance of military hardware, extremely low morale amongst the soldiers and conscripts, susceptibility against modern weapon systems. Not to mention that it's hardware has been seriously depleted, to the point it's been trying to get military shipments from North Korea and Iran. It's very likely a single NATO member like Poland could easily stand up to Russian forces at this point.

Luckily, it blew over and I could finish my compulsory military service soon after. No one I know there in the army, in different ranks, was eager to fight. Quite the opposite, soldiers and officers just wanted to be home safely. So, please don’t say how Russia is an aggressor. There were politics and governments involved, with their own agendas. The Russian people are the most chill, peaceful and generous people I know. I’m Russian myself but I’ve lived abroad for many years.
