    • @skepticpsychologist5458
      @skepticpsychologist5458 Před 6 lety +19

      Thom Parkin, as a magician you may therefore be aware that so often a trick is not what is revealed. There is almost a disclaimer in the introductory preamble. Derren may well be saying in other words 'If you cannot recall the details of a watch you know well, how can you expect someone to recall 52 objects in quick succession at a moment's glance, and how many red labels are attached. Additionally, even if you could recall it in short-term memory 4 rooms with 13 cards each with 4 labels on (208 data points), you would still need working-memory like a modern computer to analyse the probability of the next card being useful.
      If interested, there's a fairly ok basic introduction to card counting strategies at:
      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Card_counting
      However, you'll notice here that all methods are based upon returns over time, not perfect games without losing. Derren has done something different here. My guess is that he used a conventional card counting strategy and filmed copious numbers of games over several nights and locations, each time betting the maximum amount as he did here, until he got the run of 4 games he wanted. I suspect he made an agreement with a casino chain owner(s) that he wont take home any of his earnings or losses. The casinos would in return have free publicity and give millions of viewers the impression that their games can be beat using Derren's pseudo-method.

      Dude this is just another way of card counting, with Derren's unique twist on it. People card count all the time and don't last very long in casinos for good reason, they win.
      Thom was simply pointing out a method Derren is doing in this situation, you don't need to completely nullify it with your simple knowledge of maths and tv in order to prove him wrong, because you're probably not 100% correct yourself.

    I've worked in casinos as a manager for many years. This looks staged. The chips in the float are not the cash chips that would be used in a normal game of blackjack. The chips in this clip are the ones that are used on a "demonstration table", which is usually used either to teach newbies or used in fun casinos. Some casinos would allow Derren Brown into a casino to have drinks at the bar, a meal in the restaurant and allow his friends to gamble, but they would never allow him to gamble as it would be too risky. He is a master at what he does and I am a fan, but he is also very good at publicity stunts too in my opinion. It's still good entertainment though and he is a great showman.

    You play with 6 or 8 decks.
    Card counting for low cards is moronic. Your odds of success are wildly reduced. Playing when the deck is stacked with high cards is profitable. Only by 1%.
    As the dealer shuffles even a 4 deck shoe back together with over 30 cards remaining the odds of this being genuine are too low to be profitable. As for hitting 16 vs a 6.... no way. Even pure maths shows that's a stand vs any random assortment of 35+ cards remaining.

  • @donaldasayers
    @donaldasayers Před 6 lety +17

    I have heard of the use or "memory palace" as a way of remembering things. But with Darren? I say bollocks, he always makes things look a lot harder than it is.
    All you need to keep track of are two numbers, the number of low cards, 5s or less, dealt and how many high cards have been dealt, that's it. As you get near the end of the deck you can tell if there is an imbalance in the cards left and adjust your play accordingly.
    You absolutely don't need to remember the suits of the cards played or even the rank, just its value: high=10, low 5 or less.
    That's why casinos use four decks and usually reshuffle the played cards back in long before they get to the end.

    1:12 no it isn’t, the object is to beat the dealer wether you have a higher hand or not. 1:27 most casinos use 6 decks and many use an electric shoe so card counting is impossible 2:08 best strategy dictates you should never take a card if the dealer has a 4/5/6 and your total is 12 or more. As there are more. Adds that bust than wouldn’t, dealer has to draw on 16 or less and stand on 17 or more, so there is no reason, other than you knowing what the next card is, due to dealer error, that you should EVER take a card on 16 against a dealer showing a 6. 3:40 suits do not matter in Blackjack, there is no need to memorise the suits, the amount of cards yes but by remembering the suits only adds to the amount you have to remember which in turn makes it harder to card count. 4:46 “I can see why he’s banned from casinos” he can come in any casino and they would take his money, this isn’t card counting this is made up TV bollocks, no casino would ever permit recording without permission from the manager. I have permission from the managers from the casinos I record in and the rule is that I can record as long as I don’t have video footage of any other customer in the video. Basic card counting is quite easy and most people could learn it within an hour or so, full counting takes a lot longer and requires a team to do it without being caught. As soon as you are caught you get black listed and all casinos use the same database and share information. Darren Brown talks bollocks and this is all set up for the television and for the idiots who choose to believe him, could he really do this would he really be showing everyone on TV? No he’d be playing blackjack in casinos making millions and retiring!!

    Alright, it's story time. I like a read books...but being budget minded, I tend to buy most of my books from used book stores and second hand shops. Many years ago I found a "book" in a second hand store about how to win and black jack and poker. I use the term book loosely, because it actually looked like a hand-typed manuscript from an old style typewriter that was copied on a copy machine and then cheaply bound; a hand-crafted, self-published book on card games. It was all laid bare to me. It's called card counting and you have to really sharp mind and practice at it constantly. Instead of objects inside a vast room, you link a story in your head. A light switch is a 2, a stool is a 3, a car is a 4, a glove is a 5 (a light switch has two positions, a stool has 3 legs, a car has 4 wheels, a glove has 5 fingers). And you imagine cartoonish characters involved, like a car running over a SPADE shovel and getting 4 flat tires (4 of spades) or a white glove opening up to reveal a shiny diamond in its palm (5 of diamonds). You just keep adding to the visual/mental story inside your head and you can remember every card dealt in a deck, in order. I thought it was hard with 52 cards. Multiply that by 4? You have to be a mental genius.

      Memorizing every card in a deck (one definition of 'counting cards') is easy enough for most people. Memorizing 2 decks is left for only the best. 3 decks is for savants only. Memorizing 4 decks would be impossible I would think, unless this memory palace thing is doable. At the Casio on the Gold Coast here in Australia they have machines that have 12 decks of cards and continuously reshuffle. No counting of any kind with those. People still beat them though, there is a great book by Kevin Mitnick called 'The Art of Intrusion'. Chapter 1 tells the real story of a group of friends who beat the casino for $1,000,000. Got to have guts and be dedicated though ..

    You don't need to memorize every card. All face cards, regardless of the suit are worth 10 and so are the 10s. That's 16 per deck. With 4 decks that 64 total. Now just keep track of the smaller suits in 2 groups. A-4 and 5-9.

  • @leosousa7404
    @leosousa7404 Před 4 lety

    I honestly don't think this is necessarily staged. Doubling 11 has only 30% blackjack chance, and he might have stalled because more face cards had been drawn earlier, which also increases the chance of no bust over 11. So hitting a 16 is precisely the very high stakes reason you are counting cards in the first place. Derren knows this is 4 deck Blackjack, he has done memory tricks before and counting isn't actually cheating, but casinos have policies of only admitting people who don't win as consistently as a counter. However the dealer hadn't seen this before because counting is an elaborate rare enough skill.

    • @danielyuan9862
      @danielyuan9862 Před 2 lety

      This is very staged. Hitting on a 16 against a dealer's 6 is very rarely a good play. The dealer 6 is very likely to bust and hitting your 16 makes _you_ very likely to bust. But I'll give him the benefit for the doubt on that one. I'm more concerned with his thought process on doubling down on the 11. Despite the rare chance of hitting 21, it's still an obviously optimal play, especially against a 5. He is playing basic strategy and he's acting like he's doing something crazy. That's when I know for sure that this is fake, because he doesn't even know how the play blackjack correctly.

      +RanDumSocksGames I agree that his early stuff was a lot more narcissistic and kinda building himself up to be some sort of prodigy, but his more recent stuff he's toned down a lot and focuses more on really clever tricks and explaining them so that they make perfect sense. I really recommend "The System", where he seems to predict 6 Horse Racing Games in a row, but the way he explains it at the end is so effin amazing, and it's obviously not fake because the trick is actually so simple. He got more into helping people and changing people's lives in that overall TV series, it's really cool.
      Also, memory palace isn't some fancy "bullshit", it's a genuinely effective mnemonic technique. I've used it to memorise two decks of randomly shuffled cards, only looking at each card for about a second, and I'm not at all advanced or have some special memory. It takes a bit of setup work and it's not *that* useful in real life but it's pretty cool.

    • @sassclem3190
      @sassclem3190 Před 3 lety

      Not really. Many people use this sort of imagery to remember information and it can be much easier for them. It can be taught but for many, this is just something they have done since they were a child to memorise things. Over the years if you properly make use of it you can visualise these settings quite well and easily navigate through them to quickly remember things. My mum uses this sort of visualisation with mainly numbers and so will remember sequences of numbers based on location in her setting. To recall the sequence she just goes over the locations rather than trying to remember the ACTUAL number. This imagery is probably easier to Derren because he can use this method to learn how to memorise a wide range of things, not just cards.

    Except it’s a multi-deck shoe so the 4 sticker thing is a load of bs. Card counting is -1 for 10-A, 0 for 7-9 and 2-6 is +1. Even doing this the edge is only 1% so whilst in the players favour in the longer term that is indeterminate and losing streaks can and do happen and in UK, for example, cards are shuffled a lot usually with continuous shuffling machines, which if used renders card counting impossible. Card counters generally have an EV (expected value) of (something like) $100 per hour on a large bankroll so huge wins in the short term whenever bets go up are possible but exaggerated. Players must play for hours and hours before profiting and casinos are aware of players using card counting techniques and there is always the risk of being asked to leave, or backed off as it is known.
