  • Steve and Matt Bourie, from the American Casino Guide, discuss 8 things to never do at a blackjack table. They explain why you should never do these eight things and, why they are bad. Topics covered include: sitting at a 6-to-5 table, playing with a continuous shuffling machine, handing your money directly to the dealer, touching the cards at a multi-deck game, touching your bet once the hand starts, giving verbal signals to the dealer, not using basic strategy, and being a jerk to other players or the dealer.

      Never fail to tip the people serving you too. Especially the dealers. Dealers ARE NOT against the players. Quite the opposite in fact, they make minimum wage from the Casino and only survive on tips so, unless youre acting like a drunken obnoxious asshole, they WANT you to win so youre more likely to tip well.

      That's true, you could do that, but you're still wasting your time. Your time would be better spent with something else, surely, than squandering it getting a soft drink for free. Especially since it won't be worth what you'd spend in gasoline driving there and back. Even if you ride a free shuttle, it's a lot of time spent to get something of very little value.

    I went to Crown Casino in Melbourne Australia with 5000 in my pocket with the purpose of playing on the 100 minimum table. About 30 minutes later with stacks and stacks of chips I was invited to the Teak room which was more private and gave free drinks and food and had higher table limits. I couldn't do anything wrong...I didn't lose one single bet. The best one was when I put down a 4000 bet and got blackjack, I picked up my 6000 and went and cashed in my chips. I walked out of there with 33,600, a full stomach and a gut full of bourbon.

      Leanne, what you play has no effect on the other player's winnig or losing. I won't go into statistics deeply, but "what you receive as a card is yours, based on a one-time event, when receiving that card". Now whether you win, or lose, is merely "based on the outcome at the table(dealer)". You have no effect on the other's and they have no effect on you. So play as you want and ignore them.

      Here's some tips that might help. For strategy, play the simple free online games or apps on your phone/computer(24:7 Blackjack is a good one) and have a basic strategy card open in a second window or printed out in front of you that you can refer to. It's really pretty simple once you play a while. There's only certain instances (like soft hands or pairs) that get tricky about double/split, hits, or stands. As for playing at a table, try to find a game off hours or to the side where you can play against the dealer and no one else. Most dealers are pretty helpful and understanding if you tell them you're a beginner, especially if you tip. Some hands alone with a good dealer will help your confidence with your signals and going through the motions. Don't be afraid to ask a pit boss for what you want. Tell them you're nervous around other players and ask if they can put you with a good dealer for one-on-one. This is probably better requested off peak hours. Finally, have realistic expectations. My goal is to MAYBE win a LITTLE money (if I happen to triple my initial bank I cash out), but in reality, if I can sit for a few hours, enjoy the drinks, watch people, have fun conversation, and break even, it's been a good night.

I lived there for the better part of a year and really enjoyed blackjack. I didn't 'win' but I found it to be a very even game, with plenty of drinks being served that gave me good entertainment value for what I left behind. Look for single deck shoes, hand shuffled, with friendly dealers. Not sure if that even exists anymore (25 years since I was there) but they make their money by giving you lots of drinks to throw off your game. It worked, but I paid less to drink at a blackjack table than I would have in a bar in Canada and met more interesting peeps.

The dealer for dealing 2. The cutter or 3. The newest guy/gal and sometimes its completely justified for the last. If you split 10s against a 10 that's dumb and you're playing for yourself and you deserve abuse for it...it took me a lot losses to figure splitting 10s was dumb and I got shit for it everytime I did it eventually I evolved as a player to never do it.

    My father was a pit boss for so many years and he told me there are four important rules you touched on one of them but I’ll stick with priority by the list and it is common sense. 1: You’re not starting on the casinos dollar but even if you win it big at the beginning it is your money, you do not have to gamble it, don’t go past your point of preservation. This means that you can keep your level of living and playing. 2: you were never promised a win; huge, small, coming out even, these don’t happen all the time. If you don’t know what you are doing, the more likely you make a mistake, the higher percentage the casino has. 3: You are in a business with service and entertainment. There is an aim to please everyone. There is some recourse to aid in situations, if you are a person they want to keep around. Staying calm, politeness and detailed explanation of emotional upheaval due to x employees neglect for blah combined might get you a discount on one of the many service/entertainment venues but they would fire the employee for being inept before they consider giving a return. 4: you are there to enjoy yourself and be entertained. If you are not enjoying yourself that day it might be a better idea to choose another day to gamble, or another game. Just because in theory craps, pai gow and bacarrat have exponential odds for you, it may be not your game. It may be that gambling doesn’t work for you or brings out the worst in you. Just play well with others.

Go get a drink, eat, take in other entertainment, sleep, go home. Try another time. You have to "Go With The Flow". When lady luck is running with you, go with it. When luck is not going your way, get up and walk away. Take a break, sit at another table, or go home and come back another day.

      And it’s not a secret, what cards other players have. I only play single or double decks, many time’s they’ll deal the 2 cards both up. And if no one is sitting in the hot seat (last chair), I do. Say Table’s full, 3 busted, 1 split and both hands are in, and 1 has 18,(they’re friends) I’ve got a 13or14 and I stay, Dealer takes a face card and busts. It’s an unorthodox play, still I’m up the .5%. Once, the 3of us were only at the Table, kicking butt, then it’s usually time for new Dealer, but a new player sat at last chair, it was like they didn’t know how to play, and our luck ran out. They had to be playing for the House.

    I've never seen the continuous shuffling machine, but it certainly sounds nefarious!
    My wife and I play a lot of Pai Gow, and a few years ago, it was a very ritualistic game, which included rolling a die to see who gets the first cards. It was much slower, too.
    Now it's all computer, and while they alternate between two automatically shuffled decks, the computer knows exactly what is in each hand. The dealer can punch a button, and tell you the "house way" to play your cards, without seeing them.
    Yeah, the game plays much faster than it used to, therefore more income for the casino, but the computer knowing what's in your hand is just creepy!

    I was once chewed out by another player for hitting on a card that he didn't think I should have hit on. He was full on yelling at me, saying the EXACT thing you mentioned - that if I hadn't hit, the dealer would have busted. The dealer had to tell him to back down. Didn't bother me any, though. It was my hand and I'll play it the way I want.

    • @incrediblesulk555

      Thomas Maresh no one should tell another player what to do. You may have hit on a bust card that odds say you should have stayed on and it may mess up the hand for others. All I would say is if it’s a novice with you just trying to have fun then get up and leave.

    • @incrediblesulk555
      @incrediblesulk555 Před 5 lety +4

      Thomas you have to understand you are playing the odds and you are playing as a team. If you hit on 14 and the dealer has a 6 then you will continue to get yelled at. Other than that have fun.

      Just tell him the "count" dictates what you do. Lol... actually never say that. Everyone's actions affect all future outcomes, including people that think they are experts. If someone plays perfect basic strategy, their play can cause a bad outcome. Anything can happen in the short term, yet basic strategy is based on long term odds. You can just as easily have caused yourself to win and/or the dealer to bust, but nobody ever mentions or remembers when that happens, do they? Anytime I'm at a table with cranky and superstitious people, I just leave and find a more fun table. People need to chill and have fun... If they stay long enough, they will not leave a winner, guaranteed, no matter how good they think they are. You can play longer, on average (in theory), if you play good basic strategy, but many people giving out advice during actual play don't do that themselves. I see this more at the craps table than I do at blackjack. I never let dealers play my cards for me. The customer (tipper) is the boss.

      @@incrediblesulk555 you have to understand that it is unknown what the next card up will be and for all intents and purposes it is completely random. While it's true that a bad play could cost the rest of the table...It's equally likely that a bad play will shake things up and benefit the rest of the table. Maybe you stole the dealers bust card? Maybe you stole a card that would cause the dealer to get 21? Mathematically, other people's play can not effect your actual chances of winning or losing.

    If you make a series of low bets, win and lose, and then suddenly make a huge bet you stand a good chance of being asked to leave, especially if you win on your large bet. It's a sure sign of counting and, although legal, the casino does NOT have to let you do it, even if they only suspect it.

    Just a comment on "don't tell the dealer - use hand signals". Yes, but as a regular player who plays hours at a time we get tired and some times our signals get a bit sloppy and are misunderstood. While hand signals are required, I find all the dealers I play with also appreciate speaking as well as it reassures us both my hand said what I told it too! I should add I usually play at night with few or no others players and they all know I never take insurance, for example, so waiving off insurance won't count as a stand on my card instead.

    My first time ever playing blackjack, I took another card and ended up winning but the rest of the table felt I should not have taken that card. I guess I defied the odds or did something an expert wouldn’t do. Three people at my table were visibly angry and accused me of ruining their hand. Eff that. Seriously. If you don’t get to play your hand the way you want, then what is the point? Their #8 was spot on.

When playing poker only play a hand that will beat all the others. When playing blackjack get cards that equal more than the dealer without going over 21.

    Let me call this #8b: Going along with your #8, Don't sit at the end seat to the right of the dealer because every player WILL get on your case if you don't play your hand like they want you to. Others at the table can and will also make poor choices, but the person sitting in the end seat will be the one that is ultimately blamed if the table loses.

    • @gowifb
      @gowifb Před 2 lety +4

      Good call although I like to take that seat since I would play basic strategy. While some people are pissed if something bad happens most still keep their mouth shut since I still did what was proper. What I don't want is for someone that doesn't know what they are doing to take that seat as then for sure people will be commenting and blaming them every time something goes wrong. I just don't want to hear the whining and complaining so I am willing to take some glances every now and then instead of having a table where everyone is mad.

    • @clocktowers1
      @clocktowers1 Před 2 lety

      If you get a dirty look for that hit it just means they don't actually know "the book." I've even had a few dealers be like: "If you need advice, just ask." Then later I'll ask if I should hit a certain soft hand amd they'll be like: "Uh, I actually don't know the book to this game."

      Absolutely. If you sit down at a blackjack table and you aren't counting cards you're a sucker. I used to play poker at casinos but i'd never touch any other game. I came out ahead too.
      I used to drive a taxi in Seattle at night. I picked up a fare at a casino and he tells me he won 2000 dollars playing blackjack. I asked him, 'Did you count cards?'. He said, 'Of Course!'
