    “No Sesame. All Street. THE HAPPYTIME MURDERS is a filthy comedy set in the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles where puppets and humans coexist. Two clashing detectives with a shared secret, one human (Melissa McCarthy) and one puppet, are forced to work together again to solve the brutal murders of the former cast of a beloved classic puppet television show.”

    Not surprised honestly. I remember Jim Gaffigan talking about the whole "clean versus dirty" comedy and basically said that what matters is that you make something funny. If you're setting out to make raunchy or clean comedy, you've probably already failed. Something needs to be funny, and then whether or not it's clean or dirty is an afterthought. If your whole bit is just "hey we're really innapropriate and R rated", there's nothing funny or clever about that. And this is coming from someone who makes a lot of really stupid joke videos lmao.

    • @sha11235

    Worst thing about this movie was that it wasn’t written, filmed, edited, or acted like an actual detective crime film. If they had played it straight for the most part, it would have actually been a lot funnier without even trying

    It took me four tries to watch "Meet the Feebles" because I kept falling asleep while watching it. It would've been a great short but there just wasn't enough there for a full-length feature. This sounds like the same thing. "Team America" works because there's more going on than just puppets humping and saying curse words.

    The off-Broadway show, Stuffed and Unstrung, which I saw about eight years ago, was an R-rated evening of improv with the Sesame Street Muppeteers (including Brian Henson), and it was the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life. I literally fell on the floor laughing. I just can't see that working as a movie. And, evidently, it doesn't.

    I predict "The Happytime Murders" will be a serious Oscar contender and is already one of the best films of the year. Its overall milieu and mass son scene were very reminiscent of "The Bicycle Thief", "Rashomon" and "Battleship Potemkin". Also heavily influenced by John Ford especially in its similarity to his "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance". A gem!

    Haven't seen the movie yet but the stuff you mention about the bathtub and the organs are the type of shit that (IMO) should be a priority in this type of movies. Not because it'll make the movie more grounded, but rather because there are a lot of jokes there.
    I mean... a serious moment with a puppet on a bathtub, he/she comes out and we see that from weist down is bloded and wet and terrible, and then has to squeeze him/herself to get dry. That's what "Having fun with an idea" actually is.
    I also feel like the raunchiness and the shock value they were going for here only would have worked if we the audience knew who this puppets are. If this was a movie called "Sesame Street" and the two main characters were Melissa McCarthy and Bert, and Bert (and the rest of the cast from Sesame Street and The Muppet Show) were the ones doing drugs and fucking, then it may have been relevant.

  • @samueltheprideofafrikarobi9319

    I feel like people just can't bring themselves to enjoy a simple comedy anymore. This was a comedy that was what it was and it never really pretended to be anything else. I understand that modern movies have spoiled most people by feeling the need to give us all manner of unnecessary plot twists and give EVERYONE some ridiculously convoluted back story. But sometimes it's ok for simple fun to just be simple fun. And I think that Happytime struck a pretty good balance there. I keep hearing reviewers say that they were board with it about 30 minutes in, but neither myself nor my wife got that at all. With a 5.1 on IMDb and a 22% (critic score) on Rotten Tomatoes, The Happytime Murders is getting a LOT of undue flack from critics. Not only was this film funny (assuming you're into raunchy laughs in the first place), but it was more serious than you would expect and it was better than it had any right to be. The writers actually took just the right amount of time to create fleshed-out (no pun intended) characters here and give them just enough motive and complexity, whereas they could have EASILY just...not. Which a lot of modern comedies of this nature don't bother doing. And Melissia McCarthy surprised me quite a bit playing against type as the "straight-man" in this comedy-noir...for the most part. I don't know what people expected going in as the trailers didn't lie to the audience, but even if they had the lowest of expectations, this movie should have pleasantly surprised most people and it feels as if they didn't want to like it or it was never up their alley in the first place; which shouldn't be the movie's fault. Hell, just seeing the magic of the world famous Jim Henson puppetry was almost worth the price of admission alone for me. And it WAS really good puppet work. Well...despite all of the hate that this movie is receiving, I haven't enjoyed myself this much or laughed this hard since the South Park movie in 1999 and, if nothing else, at least this means I'll have a shorter time to wait until I can get my copy on Blu-Ray...

      True...her puppet partner was more straight than she was, but she wasn't exactly a comic foil either; save for when she sniffed the candy and when she tried to kick down the secret door. And when compared to McCarthy's other films where she for the most part always plays out-and-out prat fall laden comedic roles, this was VERY straight for her.

    • @oneopinion6806
      @oneopinion6806 Před 5 lety

      What else is boring? Historical drama shows have never interested me, a solid 70% of Geostorm where they're just talking to large screens, on a controversial note Bladerunner (though I admit the artistry of it. 2049 on the other hand I find enthralling.)
      Look if you want to watch a send up of noir using a form of entertainment normally associated with children then watch Roger Rabbit. If you need it to have more edge watch Cool World, which isn't all that great but is better than this. If you need it to be puppets that are being edgy then switch over to Team America World Police. If they have to be felt, I don't know, dig up some episodes of Crank Yankers or something? Now if you just wanted to see Melissa McCarthy insult people along with some action scenes then watch Spy where she's oh so much better and the movie is hilarious.
      Need I go on? If you found something worthwhile in this movie good on you. I mean your standards are bargain basement low, but good on you. But hey, this is just one opinion.

      It's not really a spoiler if it's shown in the trailer(s)

      Gavin James, The trailer shows Melissa McCarthy's character having a puppet liver?

    • @oneopinion6806
      @oneopinion6806 Před 5 lety

      It shows her snorting purple sugar stuff, and then coming back to the surprise of the puppets. Which is a scene right after it is explained that she has a puppet liver. The trailer (especially the red-band) put all but one or two of the shock jokes in, there wasn't much left.

    • @aswaney7449
      @aswaney7449 Před 5 lety

      One Opinion sure, but snorting purple sugar stuff isn't necessarily a given correlation to having puppet liver. Just watching her snort that doesn't automatically make me think "oh, she must have a puppet organ somewhere". It just makes me assume that she likes to snort weird shit. Therefore, Alonso revealing that tidbit about her liver is still a spoiler.

    • @oneopinion6806
      @oneopinion6806 Před 5 lety

      @@aswaney7449 I'll concede that point. I will say though the movies not good enough to worry about spoilers and also that storyline is barely touched upon and when it is doesn't feel earned now that this movie can really learn anything. long story short seriously if I hadn't paid for with MoviePass it would have been worth seeing in the first place wait for it to show up on Redbox or Netflix or something.

    I'm sorry buy y'all wanted a deep movie about puppets. It was what it was. Some jokes didnt land, but some jokes did. So conditioned in the "critic industry" that we can't just enjoy a movie for what it is. You said it, "its late August" so expectations were already low. Every type of concept has been done before, we live in a fish bowl.

      You can analyze parodies. Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Princess Bride, Team America World Police, South Park, Rick and Morty, and many others are all examples of shows or movies which rely heavily on parody which stand up to criticism and analysis. Because they are actually good.
