Great video. My bikes have the primary gears changed from 27/72 to 32/69 to lessen the torque on the clutch. Gearing is then restored to normal at the rear wheel with a larger sprocket. I've also made a cush-drive for the rear wheel using parts from a Ducati Diavell. I'll never understand why the XS-650 and TX-750 didn't have those when almost every other bike in the world (including almost all Yamahas) did. BTW, I personally know two people who had broken springs go into the primary drive and as they did, spread the gears apart, tearing the crankcase in half.

Hi Bruce. Thank you for this video. I replaced those spings to my 1977 XS 650D. No spring was broken or loose, but tired and old they were. Now a rattling noice is gone.

Hi Hannu. Thanks for watching my video. I suspect these springs are often overlooked when freshening an XS650. These engines are all getting signs of age. For the price of the springs I think it’s well worth the effort to renew the clutch. As you know, it does make a difference. Let me know if I can see your bike on CZcams or Instagram.

Hi Bruce, great video. A really nice step by step guide to dismantling the clutch basket and primary gear. Especially the large thrust type washers that are hidden in between the gear/basket. I've just finished fitting new springs on my XS 650 as there were two broken and I'm in the process of building a bike to Hill Sprint race here in the UK. looking forward to more videos. P.S Rick Forte who runs SMEDSPEED really knows his stuff concerning the XS650, so a great source of knowledge. All the best Andy.

Hi Andy. Thank you very much for watching my video and your comments. This is my first XS650 build. This one is about learning and having a reliable engine when I’m done. I have three more on the shelf so getting to know the experts and technical challenges of the XS650 will allow me to get a little more creative with the next build. Progress has been slow on the XS as I’ve been focused on completing the Sportster. There’s more to come on the XS build soon. I look forward to hearing from you again.

Hey great video, this helped me with my rebuild. One thing though, have you ran into an issue with those nuts making contact with the case? Ive got everything in the correct order, no lost washers behind the basket, im stumped..

I've done this cush spring replacement and what want to know is, with the new springs in place is there any way you should be able to turn that gear on the housing even a hair?
Before I replaced the springs I could turn that gear almost a 1/4" but replaced I cannot budge it. Should it be this stiff? I'm second guessing everything I've done here. The springs looked different than the ones I took out. It seems the new springs actually fit the voids quite nicely but I'm still not sure.
Any advice? I've epoxied and tightened the bolts as well as dimpled the edges of the bolt.
    Thank you
    Paul

Hi can you please tell me what your supplier for the springs is??

Hi Jay. Thanks for watching my video. I get most of my XS650 parts from XS650 Direct in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. That’s where I got the springs. The washer was from my local Yamaha dealer.

No need to reevaluate my outlook, it’s just fine. Typical … form an opinion without context. You can’t know me or my outlook from one comment. As far as loving my country you won’t find someone who loves this country more, but you couldn’t possibly know that from what you know of me or my history. If I offend you, please exercise your right of choice and don’t watch my channel.

You make no sense. Your message is veiled by your arrogance. I have no idea what you are accusing me of, asking me for, or trying to school me on. Mind you, it doesn’t really matter.
