Harley-Davidson Sportster M-Unit Demo HD 1080p
The Digital Guard Dawg is connected to the Motogadget M-Unit and complete wiring has been simulated for test purposes. Bruce explains some of the aspects of the system which were challenging and how he and Alfred worked it out.
With the wiring done it's time to tear the Sportster down to the frame and start the process to get ready for paint.

Harley-Davidson Sportster Build DGD to M-Unit
zhlédnutí 253Před rokem
This works! The Digital Guard Dawg works with the Motogadget M-Unit Basic. The DGD provides a typical RFID Fob system using the Run/Stop switch to activate the M-Unit without having to purchase the more expensive M-Unit Blue and use Motogadget M-Lock accessory which is not as easy to use as the Digital Guard Dawg. Connecting the Digital Guard Dawg keyless ignition to the Motogadget M-Unit works...
Wiring the Motogadget M-Unit and Digital Guard Dawg

For me, the quest for clean, tidy, dependable wiring and electronics on a build is always challenging. Current technology is making motorcycle wiring lighter, safer and easier to install. I believe Motogadget has the most advanced, dependable motorcycle electronics products on the market. Fix for Loose Switch Housing

With aftermarket bars on the Sportster there was an issue with holding the factory Sportster switch housings securely. The original installer chose to use the “wrap it with electrical tape” fix. Bruce looked for a more creative and tidy way of keeping the switch housing from rattling around.
H-D Sportster Trial Assembly - Engine Modifications
zhlédnutí 195Před 2 lety
The Sportster is getting a 1275 big bore kit from Hammer Performance. Bruce and Alfred had to slam the engine together to test fit everything before sending the heads off to Hammer Performance for them to do their magic and mate them to the new cylinders. It looks like all the modifications worked out and the build can continue without the top end of the engine together.
H-D Sportster Front End Modifications
zhlédnutí 250Před 2 lety
Here's a recap of modifications and maintenance on the front end of the Sportster project. What a difference from the previous version with the matte black lower fork legs, black headlight pot and parts showing years of use. All the front end parts are either chrome or polished giving the bike a cleaner, lighter look. I can't wait to see it with the new paint job! The front end now features pol...
Assembling the Front Forks
zhlédnutí 78Před 2 lety
Those polished lower legs are sexy! With new seals, bushings, lowering springs and fresh synthetic oil the forks should provide a better ride and more control on the Sportster. Bruce also shows how he's using chrome Pike nuts to detail the front end.
Chrome Chain Sprocket Hardware
zhlédnutí 98Před 2 lety
The old fasteners on the chrome chain sprocket are replaced with new chrome Colony Machine hardware from Lowbrow Customs. Bruce takes the opportunity to talk a little about cleaning threads, torque for fasteners and thread locker. The Sportster build is coming along well.
Mounting the Motogadget Basic

Bruce comes up with a way to install some studs in the electrical box to mount the Motogadget Basic unit. The outside of the box needs to be clean and not cluttered with fasteners used to attach components inside the electrical box.

Keyless Ignition
zhlédnutí 262Před 3 lety
Mounting the RFID Digital Guard Dawg keyless ignition module at first seemed like it may present a challenge. As it turned out, finding a location for the unit was easier than anticipated. Bruce has chosen RFID with a small fob rather than Bluetooth which would require taking a phone along. A Motogadget M-Unit Basic (no Bluetooth) has been selected to simplify the wiring.

Final assembly of the Pro-One Internal Fork Stop presented an unanticipated challenge. The lower triple tree would not slide far enough into the neck for the bottom bearing to seat in the race. Great video. My bikes have the primary gears changed from 27/72 to 32/69 to lessen the torque on the clutch. Gearing is then restored to normal at the rear wheel with a larger sprocket. I've also made a cush-drive for the rear wheel using parts from a Ducati Diavell. I'll never understand why the XS-650 and TX-750 didn't have those when almost every other bike in the world (including almost all Yamahas) did. BTW, I personally know two people who had broken springs go into the primary drive and as they did, spread the gears apart, tearing the crankcase in half.

    I've done this cush spring replacement and what want to know is, with the new springs in place is there any way you should be able to turn that gear on the housing even a hair? Before I replaced the springs I could turn that gear almost a 1/4" but replaced I cannot budge it. Should it be this stiff? I'm second guessing everything I've done here. The springs looked different than the ones I took out. It seems the new springs actually fit the voids quite nicely but I'm still not sure. Any advice? I've epoxied and tightened the bolts as well as dimpled the edges of the bolt. Thank you Paul

    Thanks for this video. It helped me out quite a bit. I just adding a redneck springer (which is built to use this ProOne kit) to my 2003 Sportster and ran into the issue of the race going just slightly too far in the neck. This caused the race to snap as the tab for the ProOne steering stop hangs up on the lip of the neck. I was able to file the back side of the tab on the replacement race down just enough to allow the race to fully seat in the neck and the tab to be flush with the neck like yours. So this kit will work as designed with some careful modification. Be aware that steering stop tab on the race is fragile. Like a moron after getting it all finished up I accidently bumped the front wheel while the front end was off the ground. The momentum of the fork with the weight of the wheel behind it snapped the tab right off. Thank God my new tank wasn't mounted yet. So the third time was the charm and I have had no issues with this setup so far. But if you were to drop the bike or turm the bars too hard that tab will break. Just something to remember if your using this setup.

    • @builtnotboughtbybruce
      @builtnotboughtbybruce Před rokem

      Thanks for watching my video. That’s a good question. There are a lot of variables involved. It seems very strange it would make enough pressure to do this. The first think that comes to mind is the check ball in the filter adapter. The check ball should open at 4 - 6 psi. If it isn’t then the pump could be building pressure in the filter resulting in the seal blowing out. This would be the first thing I would inspect. Just remove the filter, then the filter adapter. You’ll find the check ball and spring behind the adapter. Let me know what you find or if you need more help.

      Hi Fernando. Thanks for watching my channel and for your question. To bleed the rear brake I take the calliper off, turn it so the bleeder screw is facing up, then use an old disk between the pads. Once it is bled it’s easy to reinstall. I’ve been told the performance bagger guys mount the calliper similar to this. When they’re ridden hard with lots of braking they do have to bleed them frequently, most likely due to getting the fluid real hot. For the style of riding I’ll be doing with this bike I’m not expecting any issues. Let me know if you have other questions.

The issue I had with it is the same as what Revival Cycle noted, you have to pass the fob in close proximity to the receiver. If I’m going to take the fob out of my pocket to hold up to the reader why not just use a key? With the M-Unit basic no longer available I will use a Blue on the next build. I’m sure I’ll use Digital Guard Dawg again as well. Both are great products. I might put a DGD in Karen’s ‘92 Miata for her. 🤔 Thanks for your comment about the bike, I appreciate it. 🙏

    • @greg1813
      @greg1813 Před rokem

      @BuiltNotBoughtByBruce ah, gotcha. Your setup makes sense then. If you go to m-unit blue, your phone can be your key. It encrypts and you can set the proximity from your bike for unlocking it. It also has a cool GPS function that if your alarm goes off, you get a notification right to your phone. It also tracks it across the globe as long as it has power. Pretty handy in a worse case scenario. The motogadget fob would have to swipe over a close proximity, like a key card. This would be a back-up if your phone died. You could use it on the original munit your running but I like the proximity unlock that you achieved achieved with the bull dog.

    • @builtnotboughtbybruce
      @builtnotboughtbybruce Před rokem

      Hi there. Thanks for watching. If your triple trees have paint on them then you’ll need to get it off. Paint stripper will work. Other options are vapour blasting or glass beading the parts to get them nice and clean. Then you can start sanding. I would normally try to get to about 800 grit. The more work you do here the less you’ll do with the polishing wheel. I use a couple of polishing wheels on my bench grinder. I have a yellow one that is more firm and I use a coarse compound on it. Or finishing I switch up to a soft, white wheel with fine compound. It’s satisfying to make those aluminum pieces shine, but fair warning … it’s a dirty job! Let me know how it works out for you.

But when I’m there I always seem to find someone that can use an extra hand, whether it be a 10 second bracket car or a NE 1 car with a 7.60 index. I’m there to enjoy the racing.

    Hi Bruce I just got my module and I’m trying to put it on my 2005 sportster any tips or install videos that might help?

      Hi. Sorry for the delayed response. I’ve been working on some changes to my production equipment. I found a pretty good video at Iron Anchor on CZcams. The best thing about it was the reference to a wiring diagram for Harleys which I found online and kept a copy of. Let me know if you have any specific questions and I’ll do my best to help you out.

      Also I know this is an older video but did you change the tank ? If so do you have that one ? If so would you be interested in selling it ?

    • @builtnotboughtbybruce
      @builtnotboughtbybruce Před rokem

      I did change the tank. I have two sets of tins for this bike so I can swap them out for a different look. The original tank hangs on the wall in my shop. Being my gal bought this bike for me about 10 years ago I have kept all the original parts for sentimental reasons. Both of my new tanks are from Lowbrow Customs. One is a Sportster and the other is an Alien tank. Lowbrow has lots of styles, the prices are really good for brand new tanks.

      @BuiltNotBoughtByBruce oh yeah very familiar with lowbrow . I to tinker with bikes . Been thinking of making a channel . But I'm a better builder then director lol. Understandable on the hanging on to it . I have a few pieces from my first real bike that will never leave me .
