  • Many people use these terms interchangeably however they are very different parts. Couples (or couplings) are permanent while unions allow you to take it apart or rotate the pipe to a different orientation.
And there are many more versions of couples than you think. We show you 5 in this video.

Hi. You have this item on your website “
TP-150 Test Plug for 1.5” Sch 40 pipe with square nut”. My question is please: once you remove the red nut, what is the size of the female thread inside?

It's non-standard. Won't fit anything but that plug.

When using a union to repair pvc pipe that's had to cut out how much pipe needs to be left for the union to be placed without leaking or blowing off. I cut 2 inches of pipe out and just added the long 6inch union with the big rubber thingys ( I know you all know what they're called, but I don't, and the union on one end began leaking. I bought another one as the one I used was fairly old. I am going to attach the new one but Just in case I am wondering am I leaving too much pipe. As you can tell I have no idea what I am doing. I just installed a brand new pressure tank and water line and I am learning alot about not enough glue, not flush joining not leveled line etc. My husband passed over a year ago and he handled all this stuff. I was his gofer and watched what he did but watching and doing are two extremely different animals.

Did you use a couple, union or compression union? They are 3 different things. Generally to "splice" in a union you only cut a very short piece out. About 1/2" or less, but it does depend on the union. Most unions are fairly compact (short.) What size pipe was this for?
Also maybe best to email us directly, much easier to answer such questions that way. :-)

Thanks for posting this video!! Can the tailpieces be cut down slightly on a 3" sch 40 PVC slip union? I have a situation where I need to reduce the overall length for a 3" such 40 PVC check valve installation by an inch or two, I can't find any unions shorter than 4".

You can trim 1/4" to 1/2" but not much more than that. The problem is pvc sockets are tapered, ie, funnel shaped. When you cut them down you make it harder to start the pipe. If this is a spa with low pressure (25psi or lower) you can go a bit further, but then you'll have to chamfer the pipe so it'll start, but you can't do much because it can cause a leak because the sealing is done at the base of the socket. see this video:

Good video, but you may want to switch to a lapel microphone. The sound is very muffled and quiet.

Yea I can try that. I was using a boom mic. :-/ Thanks for the suggestion.
