  • After a couple of pandemic postponements, the Hoodoo Gurus finally hit the stage at the Hordern Pavilion for their 40th Anniversary Tour. I’d been waiting even longer, many years to finally see them live. It was a great set of old and new. Twenty three songs in all, every one a gem.

    My favorite album and Imo their best material is Mars Needs Guitars.
    they could play that entire record cover to cover like when I saw them mid 80s in New Orleans. Every single song is strong

      Yes, that's a great album. I hummed and harred about seeing their upcoming 'Stoneage Romeos' tour but decided I didn't want to see that album live in its entirety. There are so many other great songs I'd like to hear instead. It wasn't an easy decision.

    Great. Saw them in Adelaide a few days after. The sound in the room was muddy and horrible so it’s nice to see this and appreciate what they could have sounded like.

    • @Peter_LiveMusic
      @Peter_LiveMusic  Před rokem +2

      Sorry to hear about the poor quality sound for you. I've learnt that sound quality varies greatly depending upon where you are in the room. Generally, down the front where the view is great results in lousy sound. A couple of nights after this, I went to see Goanna. I was excited because I'd scored myself a front row seat. But it turned out to be a real disappointment with limited view and atrocious sound - so bad I had difficulty understanding Shane Howard's between songs talking. Anyway, the Hoodoo Gurus sounded terrific where I was sitting at the Hordern. In fact, they sounded much better than my cheap recording device managed to capture. Thanks for commenting.

    • @kimbaldunsmore4633
      @kimbaldunsmore4633 Před rokem +1

      @@Peter_LiveMusic I thought the sound at the Hordern was pretty good wherever you were (maybe the way the venue is designed). We were up the front, up the back and in the middle at different times. Obviously right at the front is not good for your hearing though, but hey I'm 57 years old with industrial deafness!!

    • @Peter_LiveMusic
      @Peter_LiveMusic  Před rokem

      @@kimbaldunsmore4633 Glad to hear you found the sound good throughout the venue (which is how it should be). When I said 'down the front', I meant right up against the stage, as close as you can get. You are not in direct line of any of the speakers, a kind of 'shadow' if you like. Plus you get sound from the monitors right in front of you on the stage. This causes distortion. Thankfully, even stepping a few feet back can enormously improve sound quality. Because when I'm videoing I like to have the most uninterrupted view of the stage that I can, I'll often be on the barrier. But I always know I'm sacrificing sound quality. I know with the Goanna concert the sound was so much better further back because I've watched other videos taken at the same show. I've no idea where Philip was at the Adelaide concert. Perhaps the sound was bad throughout the venue. A great pity for all the fans if that was the case.

    I was at this gig wiv a couple of mates I have known for over 40 years. What a blast - the Gurus sound as good as ever and the support bands were brilliant as well.
    I last saw the gurus at Avalon RSL circa 1985, missed my lift and had to walk home to Bayview (took all night).
    Watch the bit where Dave lists the venues they have played in Sydney. I said to my friend sitting up the back 'what about Avalon' and then straight away he lists Avalon - she looked astonished and goes 'he heard you' Ha ha I must have a loud voice.

    • @Peter_LiveMusic
      @Peter_LiveMusic  Před rokem +2

      They certainly did sound great. I'm always a little nervous these days about seeing my favourite bands from my distant past - time is sometimes not kind. But I had nothing to worry about on this night. I thought, being the '40th anniversary' tour, I'd include some of their reminiscing between songs. After all there's more to a concert than just the songs. It's a change to get to know the band a little better. Thanks for sharing your memories of the night.

      Sorry to hear they aren't playing anywhere near you. I'd been waiting a very long time for this Australian tour. While they have played at a few festivals, they haven't been playing their own shows. It's good that they are now heading overseas to play (maybe a few European dates will follow). You should think of making a trip if at all possible. I'm not sure how much touring they'll be doing in future. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for commenting.
