Was it not the same Ernie Shavers that journeyman Jerry Quarry took apart in his (Shavers') prime?! The vaunted Shavers' hitting power, I think, was most effective against sitting or stationery targets, or slow starters like Ken Norton. Against an excellent boxer-puncher [by comparison] like Foreman [regardless of this fact being overshadowed by his fearsome punching], Shavers would be disoriented facing up against a guy who could dish it out just as much as him! KO for Foreman inside 5 rounds. 'nuff said.

Oh all the trash talk was just for show. He only ever talked trash to people he was gonna fight. Outside of fights he always said good things about other boxers, both past and present. It didn't always excuse some of the mean shit he said before but at least Ali knew when he went over the line and apologized, like with Joe Frazier. Ali was way too smart to disrespect any opponents, trash talking was to put the show on top lvl, giving all he had from the first second he targeted his prey, he was so smart he gave everything, caus that's the only pure respect given to boxing, opponent, and the crowd. Earnie Shavers had 23 first round knockouts and 18 second round knockouts. Ron Lyle, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Ken Norton and Muhammad Ali all swear by his punching power. Earnie Shavers was supposed to play the role of Clubber Lang in Rocky III, but after one sparring session, he broke two of Slyvester Stallone's ribs and Sly went to the bathroom the throw up. Sly changed his mind really quick and decided it was better to teach an actor to box. Larry Holmes said that Shaver's straight right hand knocked him out cold before he hit the ground. His head crashing into the canvas actually woke him back up.
Anyone who doesn't believe Earnie Shavers was the hardest puncher in boxing history doesn't know what they're talking about.

Ali was retired for good 4 or 5 years just before i started watching boxing and became a fan. I got into it watching Hagler, Sugar Ray and when then when Iron Mike became the youngest Heavyweight champ ever i became a super-fan.
But I remember as a kid talking to the adults about Tyson’s greatness and was he the best. No matter how old they were or what generation they were from, Everyone said without thinking about it Ali was the best of all time.
After i did some studying i saw Ali had 5 losses. Compared to Mike at the time who was undefeated, ferocious as hell, ko-ing people out cold within 90 seconds damn near detaching heads from necks.
This baffled me as a kid. How could that be? How’d he lose 5 times and be the greatest of all time? Goes to show how great he really was inside and most importantly outside the ring. If you were old enough to witness his greatness, you probably made up your mind then that no one would ever be greater.
Sure some Italians tried making a case for Rocky, and the old, OLD-timers would say Joe Louis. Those old-timers would also say pound for pound Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest of all.
Imagine being so great at something and universally loved by all that you’re respected by everyone around the world? Spend most of your life an icon and living legend knowing they’ll talk about you fondly for thousands of years.

He lost because he was banned from fighting by the government for 3 years...right in his prime. He did no training in those three years. His fighting prime was stolen from him. He began losing after that. He then had Parkinson's disease and kept fighting....which of course caused losses.
Like Tyson who had a few years in prison in his prime....he lost fights after that long layoff. Same with Ali.

Several reasons why he can still be the greatest with those 5 losses. 3 of those losses were in 78-81 when he was a shell of his former self and was already showing symptoms of Parkinsons. The post Thrilla in Manila Ali was not the same fighter as before. That fight took something out of both men and neither were ever the same. So he had already declined rapidly in 76-77, and even more so in 78. He had a lot of ring milage and honestly should've retired after Thrilla in Manila, and if not then, then definitely after the Leon Spinks fights. Most great fighters begin losing a lot of fights after age 35, you're an old man in boxing at that point. There are exceptions to the rule of course.
The first 2 losses of his career were when he was still pretty fresh off coming back after a nearly 4 year ban during what would've been his prime. He went on to avenge those losses and regain the world championship. He then became the first man in history to hold the heavyweight championship a 3rd time when he avenged his loss in 78.
Finally, the losses on his record were from some of the best fighters who ever fought in the heavyweight division. Some fighters who claim to be the greatest have been known to cherry pick their competition, fighting tomato cans or fighting once great fighters who were then well past their prime. Ali fought the best fighters of his division his entire career. The record doesn't tell the entire story of a fighter, with Ali we saw a young fighter who was almost untouchable, who won the Heavyweight Championship at 22, who was unfairly banned in the 60's and then came back in the 70's with diminished speed and reflexes but was still able to prevail against even better competition, relying on his heart, his iron chin, his ring craft, and his sheer determination and will to win. I mean he knocked out prime George Forman for Pete's sake! Right after George knocked out both of the guys who had beaten Ali. How could he not have been the greatest?

The great thing about boxers is how humble they can be. He could hit and take a hit. That's life and humility will humble us all whether we want it or not.

I had an opportunity to spar with Earnie Shavers when he was getting ready to go to training camp for the Ali fight. I was a super welterweight and Earnie was just playing around and hitting us with an open glove. Even then when he hit you you got that sinking feeling and it was the hardest I was ever hit. Earnie is a very nice man. I met Ali when he was in Cleveland to fight Chuck Wepner and Ali was also a nice man in private.
