How Counter Strike Became Unkillable

  • CS:GO recently hit 1.8 million concurrent players. That’s the highest player-base Counter Strike has ever seen and it came out in 2012. But it’s no accident that Counter Strike is thriving. Valve knew exactly what they were doing, and it all started with Half Life.

The skins market place section was particularly interesting, I had never thought about how player driven the skin economy truly is. There is no doubt the skins market eventually evolved into an economy which kept csgo alive. The development of skins eco system attracted new players which fuel more interests into skins which bring in more 'investment' into the skins economy. I would say the economy noticeably started to peak during covid and the amount of skins loaned by the Pros during major were astonishing. There is a bigger part of skins tiering value such as rare gems and sticker crafts are not mentioned in the video. 😅

Remember when Valve bought CS and then put out Half-Life: Counter-Strike as a CD for purchase? I remember buying it just to support the mod and being shocked when they deleted several of the maps which were there if you downloaded the mod version. I cant remember what all maps were missing but I know cs_thunder, and I think as_tundra were some of them. Its kinda like what they did recently with Global Offensive when they launched CS2. I like valve as far as making the engine and graphics, but cutting content out is really irritating.

This highlights a key point of counterstrikes current state. Changes will come, some will stick, some will not. Ultimately, Valve listens and people need to give it time. Make your feedback and understand it takes time to polish, they cant just release critical fixes in a short amount of time.

I really appreciated you talking about the economy of the game. Something else to note is that valve also implemented an extremely similar economy into Team Fortress 2, however there was one major difference. In Team Fortress 2, the currency wasn't items themselves, rather it was "scrap metal" that you could craft by destroying 2 identical common weapons. This meant that from the start of the TF2 economy, it was doomed for hyperinflation.
There is and will continue to be an infinite amount of common weapons to be destroyed for currency. 10 years ago, one 2.50 Team Fortress key was about 8.66 refined metal. Nowadays a key is like 65 refined metal. Some people had careers off trading in TF2 back then. Now, you'd be hard pressed to make 20 dollar profit over 4 weeks unless you only trade high-end items.
Thankfully valve realized this mistake and didn't introduce any sort of currency item, and the skins themselves are the currency. And even if you need something with a steady value that can be easily sold, you can buy or trade in keys.

This is a great video, I've been playing CS since the very start, 1.6 will always be my favourite because of the atmosphere in LANs which was always amazing fun. We'd go in during lunch at school or after it finished and on weekends go in for 3 hours which could easily turn into 6 or 9hrs sessions, that felt like modern tournaments or parties especially when there was an awesome pizzeria around the corner, then towards the end of the evening we might have a few drinks (cause the staff were sound and wouldn't say anything, most played the game too) we'd head out on the piss after, but GO is a great game and hopefully 2 will be too. Now I just wish more would be done with Classic Offensive.

Great content and pretty accurate information. A few cents to highlight: there is a cap to listing price on steam market hence high tier items generally doesn't exchange via steam market however the base revenue are generated via selling keys to unbox. You can research the monthly case unboxing value to estimate the base revenue. Other revenue generators are operations and major sticker capsules.
At the time of your video, valve has not included workshop, community mod and servers for other parts of the community, other game modes like dangerzone are not in CS2 too. These features (including the eventual development of the skins economy) are the backbone of CS, a game that's created by the community, for the community.

Don't see why it would die ever even without updates. The game is based upon a formula that appeals directly to human nature in multiple ways and is at the same time accessible to 99% of people. A combination of gameplay, gambling and competitiveness can never die as all 3 of these things appeal to our nature.
Valve could stop updating CS for years and it would still thrive, just look at TF2 at no. 16 on most played, yet it never gets an update and is 16 years old.

1.6 custom servers was still big in 2010's in Eastern Europe. Planty of counter-strike 1.6 gaming forums, multiple communities, and not just full of dudes, but bunch of girls too (eastern european girls build different). And people didn't just played the game. They met other forum members IRL, parties and gatherings or on private occasions. New friends, new relationships, new dramas, etc.
But around late 2010's and now in 2020's it went quiet. Most servers closed, forums shut down, a lot of people even stopped playing the game. Let's say there are like only 2 forums/communities out of 10 in these days in my country. Kind of sad to see that.

TBH I love CSCZ, it gave players to play single player missions with bots (the only ones that were truly skilled and knowledgeable too) on the mostly played maps then and also allowed us to enjoy a spinoff story-mode gameplay in Deleted scenes. For those who complained about CSCZ splitting the fan base just because many wanted to stick with the competitive mode were being extremely selfish and self-entitled. WE could still play CSCZ on multiplayer mode. These players thought/think that they are the only ones who should play this game and the Devs should listen only to them and make changes only when they cry about it. Same thing happened in CSGO and is happening in CS2. Valve only makes changes when famous streamers and pros cry about a change even if the change only affected their own insecurity or inability to adapt. Most pros don't like changes that makes them work on adapting. They have this mentality that the game only belongs to them and others are irrelevant as if they are the ones who only paid for the game.
Point is if you don't like a game mode/game just focus on the mode you like instead of complaining.

"Valve doesn't set the prices of anything on the market" Well, this is not entirely true. They can influence the price of items on the community market by controlling which cases and collections are available in the drop pool. Cases can get retired, and collections are either permanently phased out (look at the original 2013/2014 collections) or only available in operations for a limited amount of time. This artificial scarcity thus dictates the prices of countless items and can lead to some strange situations.

atleast you guys get update. tf2 is a game with so much more depth and still has areas it could capitalize on unexplored. but you know. we didn't fit into their ideal 'simple game to develop and good economy to cash off.' the quality of community skins is horrible because they never properly gave us tools to make skins like in csgo. they tried to make it a very competitive E-Sport game in 2016 with meet your match in a game that doesn't fit that linear soulless competitive niche people have. we can't do anything about bots. and of course the quality of items and maps and weapon balences and updates has been bad. TF2 more then ever shows its age. so hardcore counter-strike fans. BE GLAD THEY EVEN CARE ABOUT YOU AND THE GAME. BECAUSE THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT US FOR SHIT. YOU GUYS ARE THE GOLDEN CHILD.

Counter Strike is still around because it’s the best FPS game on the market and you can argue it’s one of the best FPS games of all time or most competitive. Certain feelings and overall gameplay in this game just can’t be matched in other games and l haven’t even brought up the countless game modes and communities that live within CSGO and other Counter Strikes like KZ, Surf, Bhop, etc. It’s been my favourite FPS/Tactical FPS game since I first started playing. Growing up in NA, it’s very console majority here so grew up on the PS2 and XBOX which I loved but it doesn’t compare to CS. It also has a thriving and massive esports scene.

And that feeling when I hit friend in LAN mode with headshot from desert eagle, I knew the game is special. What a gameplay...Not sure if that feeling is the same in CS2, haven't played in a long time. Original CS also had amazing sounds (and 3D EAX technology), played on good 5.1 speaker setup (Logitech Z-5500). That deep subwoofer sound when you shoot m4 with silencer or desert eagle, it moves whole room, so satisfying. Also you could here steps and locate enemy precisely.
