True. I like the angle his character brings to the team. Brutally honest and cocky because he knows he has what it takes. Love him or hate him. He has a job to do. This also challenges the team to get better... so he ironically adds a net positive to the team despite being disliked.

A team of 4 Hangmans and 2 BOBs would have done this mission easy.
My favorite two characters in this movie are the foils, BOB and Hondo. They are there to provide contrast and to help escalate the emotional tension the other pilots provide. They do their job very well.
i know its a movie but hangman is the most likely to get further in his career because he is very much like maverick in some ways, he definitely fights to win he is a warrior and doesn't care about being liked they could do a sequel again with him and rooster as the main characters. one is a better leader the other a better fighter you need both in wars.
Maverick actually doesn’t have much of a career besides being a great pilot. He is the same rank as the people he is teaching. I understand why he wants to be where he is, in the infantry everyone would stay a squad or team leader permanently if they could but that isn’t a career. Being a captain after decades as an aviator is an insult and in the real military he would have been forced out.

At the very least he would be promoted to be a commander of an aviator school or some type of training facility to pass that knowledge to as many pilots as possible. He is a legend as well so becoming a private contractor or advisor would be an easy career path the military would be willing to pay alot for.
I just finished watching a film about a group of top pilots who had to negotiate a narrow pass, bomb a well-guarded target and then climb like hell to escape. In was called the 633 Squadron, made in 1964 about a fictional WWII bombing mission. Of course, it doesn't compare to Top Gun Maverick, but it has a number of the same flying scenes, shot for shot. Not as intense, of course. These were twin-prop planes and the flying special effects were not the best, but not bad for 1964. Goes to show there's nothing new under the sun. By the way, loved Top Gun Maverick. Turned the '64 movie just to watch something late night and couldn't believe it.

"There's more than one way to fly this mission" is actually the exact point. There are more than just F18s in the US arsenal. There are more than 4 planes on a US carrier. There is zero reason for them to be limited to their current choices. 1 good pass from a spy satellite could spot every SAM site. The volley of tomahawk missiles they ALREADY PLAN ON SENDING could take them all out. Dozens of aircraft burn in high and level at supersonic speeds. 4 are tasked to hit the target from altitude while the rest go up against these mythical 5th generation fighters by outnumbered them about 10 to 1. Why didn't they do that? Because it would be over in about the same time it took to write this comment.

Everything but the planes in this movie was garbage. There was zero tension compared to that of Topgun. The acting was atrocious, and the love angle was a complete waste of time. The dogfight between the su57 and the f14 was cringe. Using the terrain to confuse a su57's radar, but the f14 just locks on straight away. So bad lol.

Can't get the shots in the 22 unless it would all be CGI. The F18 has 2 seaters so they had to build the story around that.
