Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Remember Augustus Gloop, the kid from Willy Wonka who drowned in chocolate? It turns out that happens in real life, too. Yep, candy has been responsible for MANY deaths. Think poisoned candy, a flood of burning molasses, and a chocolate Easter bunny explosion. Turns out candy has a not-so-sweet side, too.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

✨literally✨
The real ones know lol
I worked 3rd shift at the palmers chocolate factory before the explosion and lived in Reading Pa my whole life. My friends aunt was one of the workers that tragically died. Palmers was known to be awful, they treated us like dogs, the working conditions were disgusting and the pay was low. thank you for bringing light to this horrible tragedy my city is healing from, these people deserved to go home to their families that day
My condolences your aunt passed. 😢
Bailey, please do a Dark History of Black Friday
Yesss
Ooh and Christmas! Like old Nordic and Slavic "father Christmas" 🤩
Yes
I didn’t know I needed this 😂
Oh yesss
I grew up in The Church of Scientology and would love to see you do a dark history on it because now that I've left, I've learned how truly corrupt, abusive and just a straight up scam it is.
Not sure if this is true or a bait🤨...no offense but Scientology is too dangerous to report on. Stephanie Harlowe tried it once.
@@madeleinereed6460 yeah I think that's the only reason why she wouldn't do it. The church would go after her with their "Fairgame" policy. But there's so much evidence especially with after the Danny Masterson trial.
All churches are cults
The last Podcast on the Left do a great series on Scientology
You fell for Scientology? I've got some real estate on the moon I can sell you. 😂😂😂
I always listen to these daily and update my boyfriend on them. “He says what did we learn today?” 😅
Oh and Bailey freak for candy
Thats what I learned so far…
Me too lol always telling him the story’s lol I think he’s fed up😂😂
I got my boyfriend to watch her with me😭

I'm so proud of you Bailey, I subbed back when you had like 100k subscribers and now you're at 7.14 MILLION?! Like dude!
7.2 now! Our girl thrived in Covid. So happy for her 😭
fr I subbed when she had 1k subs now she has millions
That molasses story unlocked something in my brain & all I could think of is that scene in the 1996 remake of 101 Dalmatians where Glenn Close falls into an enormous vat of molasses! Y’all ‘member that?! 🤣
I don't remember that.
I would love a dark history on Disney!
She's done one already - just put "Bailey Sarian Disney" in the search bar 😊
Im pretty sure she's done one 😊
She’s done this 🥰
Well not Disney by itself but Bailey did a dark history on a Disney-ish topic she shed a light on some of the history/ backstory of the real life Disney Princesses that the movies were based on; Mulan, Pocahontas, and I can’t remember the other one. Definitely check it out
Valutainment Channel just talked about this..They fight back. They order people that have contracts with them to unfollow any creators that talk negatively about them.
Every episode of Bailey is another reason for me to not completely hate my life
LOL
Right?
I needed this comment ❤😂
It gets better, stay with us ♥
Maybe get some therapy?
We sppreciste to see this series thriving. Bailey never disappoints. We all know for a fact that she's one talented individual with so much to offer.
Do we remember Aquatofana??! Us MMM's made that part of our personalities Bailey 😂😂
Dumb question, what's a MMM?
BAILEY BAILEY!!! You should do the dark history of dancing! Dancing has been told to tell stories, but I’ve heard that in history, there’s also been people dying because of dancing too much. There’s also things such as the Danse Macabre, or the Dance of Death. I don’t know much about it but would love to learn about it with you!!
I thought this was going to be the dark history of actual candy , and I was going to cry. It’s all I have left. 😭
honestly after the sugar lobby one... i ain't eating candy lol
I'm eating candy rn lol

I live near reading PA and am in emergency services and Bailey, you did an AWESOME job of covering the Palmer explosion!! So much was exactly how it happened, so kudos on the excellent research and storytelling (as usual).
The only thing (positive) I’d add about the explosion is that it happened in a SUPER populated place just outside the city, along the main artery into town & right below a busy, walkable area. Also literally feet from homes, a crazy busy highway, and a TRAIN TRACK (reading railroad) where the train passes frequently. The loss of life is horrible and inexcusable but I am thankful there was not *more,* as it is only sheer coincidence (and the west reading fire response) that there was not a wild domino effect making it exponentially worse (think a cargo train being blown off the tracks into a residential neighborhood).
This is the first time I’ve had close knowledge of one of your videos and it was super cool (not the situation itself obviously 😬 ). Also the DuPont answer is bc their headquarters are in Delaware, right over the line from PA. They own a huge chunk of everything from medical to utility around here.
The whole molasses situation... I have been a server for a breakfast restaurant for many years. Our hot maple machine was broken so we once had to fill up a huge container full of syrup in the microwave. I needed to heat something else. I took the container out of the microwave and set it too far off of the counter. It fell off. My genius self tried to catch it. The bottom hit the ground and the boiling hot syrup bounced up all over me. Naturally, I tried to wipe it off. Instead, I smeared the burn all over my skin. I cried so hard. Also, I was so anemic at one point that I had to have infusions, but before that I tried iron supplements and liver (gross) and all that jazz. This included molasses. It was disgusting. It reminded me of a thicker maple as far as the texture and consistency. I could only imagine how badly it burnt if it was hot. Sounds pretty horrible to suffocate on.
Oh no.. this sounds so traumatic.. sorry you had to go through that. I hope you're doing well now with your health
@@jurper5428 I went to the ER after having a basketball sized bruise for no reason and everytime I stood out it felt like someone hit me in the back of the head with a hammer. They didn't understand why I wasn't in a coma my iron levels were so low. I got 10 infusions and 12 years later I am still healthy with great iron levels. Thank you for asking ♥
“This is not on my bingo card” ugh I love Bailey lol
I live in New England. The flood of 1919 was taught and we even went on a field trip to Boston that included the north end. On warm hot days it still smells like molasses
Yay another mass hole!!!! Was taught about this too!!
Grew up less than an hour from Boston and I never heard that story until I did the duck tour 😅
I'm from the north shore and even took Italian in HS, went on field trips to the North End, etc, I'm today years old finally learning about this. Thank you Bailey for picking up the slack for my teachers 😂
Scary
I visited in July to see my friend and I was able to smell it! It’s a fun fact I share with my students whenever they check out “I Survived The Great Molasses Flood” from the school library. I love seeing it click in their heads that this thing actually happened and lose that disconnection.
I don't have friends and my 16 year old daughter got me to watch Bailey
It's like having a best friend always there to cheer u up.its awesome that she loves her fans. It's like the pretty popular girl in high school wanting to hang out with you. Never stop what you're doing. Your awesome ❤❤
Totally agree. I'm sick a lot and don't drink. Slowly you stop getting invited, and then you just don't have anything in common anymore. Bailey is da bomb ❤😂 she's the whole package!
@@amusingkiwi1981those people don’t deserve you who stopped inviting you because you are sick and don’t drink.
Don’t mourn people so shallow like that. You’re just making room for better people!
I don’t have lot of friends either since relocating and my age in my 30s.
I have lots of great acquaintances but nobody ride or die. It’s ok though. 😊 just keep going!

Fun fact:
Capitalism, DONE ALREADY
Would love to see a dark history on the Gerber company!
The Palmer factory story hits hard. This is my local community and so recent. 😢 It's interesting how it apparently wasn't heard of outside of PA. Whereas in PA we barely heard about the train accident because this dominated everything. Or at least it did here at the epicenter. I work for a local education agency and it put everyone on high alert. We've had two evacuations due to the possible smell of gas since then at our buildings, one of which actually resulted in a gas leak being fixed. Not sure if Dupont was involved there...
If people would just behave better, literally everything would likely improve for all of us all the way around, you know?
Bailey, once again, you have done a FABULOUS job with your in-depth, detailed research and presented another unpalatable topic with empathy, understanding, and just the right amount of wit to keep us all fixed and entertained with the presentation!! Brava, my dear!! Brava!!❤️😉❤️
I’m so happy to hear butterfinger BB’s get the recognition they deserve 💔
I miss those!
the molasses story is so scary 😭 i imagine it like being covered in hot tar because it is so thick and gooey. ughhhh so much skin sloughing off
Watching all the way from Scotland. Me and my bf have listened to you for years. Do a Scottish dark history Bailey!
I love reading the many comments where ppl say they watch bailey because her videos cheer them up (as do I btw) its amazing gift to make such a difference to ppl and touch their lives just by being who you are. Bailey you are so much more awesome than you know 🖤 hope our comments make a difference to your life 😊🖤🧡🖤

I second this! Would love to hear Bailey's take on that story ❤️
Debunked
Listening to this, I kept thinking about the Palmer plant in Reading. I don't live far from there. It was such an unnecessary tragedy. I hope people have learned from this. If you're a supervisor in a situation like this, do not wait! Ball up, make the possible life saving decision and deal with the "fall out" later. I'd rather be wrong, begging forgiveness than dealing with sooooo much loss 😢 Thank you, Bailey, for including this story. I love Dark History (everything you do)! I've learned so much!!! ❤
I've watched you for yeeeaars, and as someone born 20miles away from Bradford, it made me double take when you said it!! Crazy. 🖤
The talk of the molasses incident made me think of the Puppet History episode on the topic. And now the ending song is stuck in my head.😄
When the Ghost Horse makes cameos 😂😢😂
Honestly I immediately thought of the Cordelia Botkins’ case when I heard death by chocolate.
I remember people use to drink molasses for weight loss which idk how that worked cause it’s a sugar syrup. Also as a Chicagoan when Bailey said 40 degrees is cold, I laughed 🥲
I know that excess molasses will give you the runs so maybe that has something to do with it.
Fan fact: not only did they label the poison bottles but they also added bumps to the bottles so people don’t mistake their bottles when it was hard to see. No electricity back it the days.
Love you!! Can you a dark history on horse racing/ bull fighting/ rodeos? It just popped in my head and now I’m off to google
I can't wait to get my new dark history sweater that Bailey is wearing!
It's sold out
The website is horrible. I put an order in on October 3rd and they keep telling me they haven't received it. I can't get a refund yet either. I am so disappointed 😞
I'm sad it's sold out 😭
I always suspected Bailey was somehow my spirit buddy... as soon as she admitted to candy always being at hand and grabbed peanut M&Ms at random to prove her point I KNEW my suspicion was right! lol
Me too! 😂❤
Bailey, I love you first of all 💜 Second of all, do you think you could do an updated Nestle Dark History especially covering how they're taking their name off of all their products? Maybe around boycotts in general? I think itd be a great episode to be honest.. Wish you the best 👏🏽
I know everyone's asking you to cover something but I think this would be very current and gain a lot of views 🙃
Bailey freakin' Rocks! That personality!! Her Mom has got to be awesome! You don't raise this by chance. Love you, Bailey!!
I got a Lindor Chocolate ad as Bailey explained the chocolate explosion...💀💀💀
I live 15 min from the chocolate factory in reading... I had friends sending me all kinds of crazy videos right after it happened. It was so messed up and 100% avoidable. Also the amount of gas lines we have here its actually really lucky that more of reading hadn't exploded.
Bailey, I would love a Dark History on Houdini. This brilliant master of escape also had a very sensational side hustle. Exposing fake mediums. He loathed them. Fascinating man.
I live 15 minutes from the Palmer factory explosion location and the tragedy shook lives of many people I know, especially as a nurse in the emergency room that took care of some of the injuries. Thank you for shedding a light on that story!
I was actually blown away that this came full circle to her first episode about DuPont
A little Dark History while I work. Love it 😍 Thanks Bailey!
Praying for Judy’s family and Patricia and the families of the other six who passed. I do wish companies really wanted their workers to be safe. I wish people at the top of business realized their companies are made of people not money and not product.
The molasses explosion was due to the storage, they overfilled it and they had above average temperatures and it expanded, which caused the"explosion" add in fermentation that occurred in the holding tank.. it was actually really sad cuz alot of people died..
I could listen to you tell stories all day
Please do a video on Appalachia!! So much creepy stuff here.
Bailey. My daughter came home from school talking about a couple of presidents they had covered in class, specifically Andrew Jackson. I was like you need to have them play Bailey's Dark History episode of him, it's wild. Might have to bleep it a few times but eh it's high school it'll be fine 😂 We listen to your podcasts on road trips❤
I can't believe I am so early! Really enjoy your channel, Bailey! Thanks for all the history goss!
I had such an awful, awful day at work. Coming home, I was expecting to see a Dark History episode, but not MMM. Seeing both made my day so much brighter. Thank you for taking such dark subjects and presenting them in a way that is palatable. I am so happy I found your channel 3 years ago. Keeping making us smile and taking care of yourself :)

Great Video Bails!! I washed my hear listening to this. Learned a fun fact that the candy incident led to proper labeling and assigned colred bottles for the different poisons.
Learning about the Dark History of Candy - Excellent!
Watching Bailey scarf down a handful of candy while telling us the Dark History of Candy - PRICELESS!!!
It’s always cracks me up when you mention DuPont because I’m an employee for DuPont 😂😂😂😂
Also, that chocolate factory explosion happened in my area too. Very sad

I apologize for commenting at all. I was trying to be positive and always encourage people to work for ethical companies. I myself couldn’t work for a company, no matter how well I was paid if they are destroying the environment and community around them. because of Dupont well in part because of Dupont, we all have plastic inside of us. Dupont has a long history of atrocious acts and they pay to cover it up.
The other day I was in the kitchen chatting with my Dad and I pulled out a pan to start cooking. It was a new pan but I had the urge to turn it over and see if it was from DuPont or any of their manufacturers. My Dad asked what I was doing and I told him what you taught us about DuPont, Bailey. He asked where I heard that from. I told him I learned from my history teacher Ms. Sarian. He then said, "What are you talking about? You're 44 years old. You're not in school anymore.". To which I said, "You're never too old to learn new things, Dad.". So, thank you Bailey and your team for helping those of us of any age in learning about new things. 😎👍
I am a bus driver in Reading, Pennsylvania. A few of the employees at Palmer were my passengers. many of them fly that they were smelling gas for a couple days before the explosion. And just a little sidenote, they actually sold the Palmer building a week before the explosion. March 16, 2024. Explosion sites still not completely cleaned out it still a mess.
Never thought I’d hear the name of my own town on a dark history episode 😅 hello from Bradford 👋👋❤
Palmer Candy? Under the radar? Not for me here. It's pretty much local. It was a big deal. I got news alerts about it everyday for awhile. This was huge.
i never once heard about it
There was no news about it in Iowa. Not like we are neighbors, but Im sure you smell what Im steppin in.
Well I certainly have never heard of this so I am can concor that she is correct, for me personally 😂❤
Bailey calling the molasses tank "this b**ch" got me 😂
If you want to learn more about the Molasses Flood, I really recommend reading the book “The Dark Tide.” It can be kind of a dense read, but it pretty much lays out the whole trial woven in with the personal stories of the victims and their deaths.
I hope Bailey is ok, don’t let any DuPont team members near her!!!
What’s that? What’s happening?
@@breezybreeze5409- Bailey talks about the Company DuPont a lot. They are shady and a huge company. I was just kidding.

And here I am. Still eating on my kid’s Halloween Candy 🍭 😆
I hope you are doing okay Bailey. I know it cannot be easy doing all of this stuff and researching into all of this.
I live in PA in a nearby town where the explosion happened. It was huge news here and I'm really surprised it didn't go national. It was 100% preventable and the plant supervisor should be arrested. The plant employees reported the gas leak and nothing was done about it.
I appreciate the sound clips you have inserted, like the sound used for the falling bricks. It helps add to the picture so you can understand the horror of what happened even more. You're doing great dude. ❤ Shout out to Paul and Joan 🎃
Love when I get the notification that Bailey has a new video! 🎉

Love the new merch!!!! Really hoping for a restock, it sold out so fast ❤
I live here in Pa and we heard about the Palmer plant explosion. Reading is not too far from me. The train crash in Ohio was also a big story for us because of the poisonous materials.
One of my fave times of the week is when the queen ms Sarian puts out a new ep of Dark History! Another great episode 🙌😊 much love from Horror House!

I was familiar with the molasses explosion thanks to puppet history, so I was glad to see Bailey's retelling of the events as well.
This was awesome! I’d like to see you do the history of the seatbelts laws for cars and all the stuff that went into it. How hard it was to adopt, etc!
