Something to note: Keep in mind that I'm just a normal guy who loves cars. I'm not a trained mechanic, although my father was. If something interesting car wise comes up, I try to film it and upload it for entertainment and the "look at what I done" factor. Pat me on the back, or give me a "good game" pat on the butt. These videos are meant to inspire other DIYers. Working on cars can be dangerous, even life threatening, if the proper cautionary measurements aren't taken. You also run the risk of damaging your vehicle and or voiding your warranty. If for any reason you feel like the job is too big to handle, I would suggest consulting with a professional mechanic.

You may want to practice walking the cup for when you are welding the pipe or tube. You can do that just using your tig torch with no power gas or filler wire.
You may want to think about getting a foot controller so you can adjust the heat while you are welding. If you can't get one specifically made for that machine from what I've seen you do I'd say you can adapt one to it.
Keep up the impressive work. 👍

Sweet video. Want to get into tig welding as well. Think someone else mentioned, when connecting to a cylinder, you do not want to use tape or dope. They are made to be just snugged in not cranked down as well. If you get dope or tape too far past the threads, you could inject it into your line as well as cuase damage to both your adapters threads and your tank. Teflon take is okay on the air fittings past the regulator though. You can use windex or a gentle soap and water mix on the connections once pressurized to check for leaks. If you use windex make sure to clean it off with a little water and dry since the ammonia can over time degrade the materials. Especially on stainless. Keep up the great work!

You should always grind the wolfram lengthwise. You will see the difference when you light the arc.
Also, where i live the wolfram electrode with the red end, is made with thorium, that gives out radioactive particles when they are grinded, and should only be grinded with the proper equipment. Make sure you know the which kind of electrode you are using,
The angle of the grind regulates how concentrated your arc will be. I normally go for a 30 deg. Angle. But sometimes as 45 deg. If needed.

  • @aquaticaaficionado2004

A way to save money that a lot of folks don't think of is to go to the local community college and enroll in their welding courses. You end up using up FAR more material practicing than most people would ever buy to practice. . . . It also allows you the opportunity to not just try out other processes and material, but get proficient. I spent maybe $360 for the course and easily went through $2k in materials learning.
When I started welding thanks to CZcams I thought I needed a mig and tig welder. After the courses I only use oxy and stick, nothing I do requires mig or tig (some honey do projects do, but . . ). So glad that I did the classes first because I would have bought a mig machine, then a tig. . and WASTED a ton of time and money. Don't get me wrong all the processes have a place and if you intend on making a living welding you should learn as much as you can about each process (and get good at them). .
I've seen a LOT of guys go out, buy a machine and think it is cheaper for them to learn on their own. A LOT of times it isn't even with cheap machines. Had a brother in law do this and he thought it was a bad welder, but he had the polarity switched. . he also went out and rented a big nice machine under the impression that it would solve his lack of skills issue. . it didn't. He was not happy when I spent two minutes with his "defective" machine and had it sizzling bacon. .

I know this video is 2 years old, but for any beginners NEVER pipe dope welder or tank fittings, they're tapered and don't require it, also NEVER sharpen tungsten sideways always hold the tungsten up and sharpen it, you want the grind marks going up and down not sideways. And one more tip, with tig it is so important to clean your material. I'm talking pretending you're a Dr and getting ready to do surgery, clean the mill scale off the metal, get a good wire wheel on your grinder , and wipe it down with acetone.

My AHP 200 lasted close to 7 years of HARD use and worked flawlessly. Then the amperage started to fluctuate wildly and with shipping and labor not worth the cost to fix. So just purchased a new AHP 225xi for $775.00 and includes shipping. It is American owned but produced in China. I am betting it will last at least 6 years and for the cost of a 225 amp machine, I think it is a deal.

Stumbled on your video looking for a review on this welder, you're the only one so far who actually used the thing and gave any practical feedback lol.
I'm considering it because the price is unbelievable. If it'll penetrate all the way through on that stock at 90a, I'm sure it would do some pretty hefty metal work turned up high!
Would you recommend it? I'm considering TIG because I want the ability to weld stainless steel, steel, aluminum, thick material and sheet metal alike. MIG seems a little too hot and heavy, and fluxcore doesn't seem like it would be structurally sound enough (in my price range) for anything but art sculptures. Stick might do, but TIG looks oh so much better.
My intention is also to custom fab frame and panel for trucks, motorcycles, and atvs, and probably some artwork and machinery here and there.

    • @cmattdabrat
      @cmattdabrat  Před 3 lety +1

Nice!!! It definitely has some good penetration. I'm really happy with my purchase. I just need to get better at it. I've own both cheap stick and mig welders. This had by far been the bust buy yet. Stick is good for really thick work. A lot of cleanup. Mig, I wouldn't do more than 1/8", and a lot of bb's to clean up as well. Tig just comes out so clean, you get a clear look at the weld, and thus far it's penetrated through some pretty thick stuff. A lot easier to blow there with this. Let me know how things workout for you. Be sure to stick around cause I bought this with the intention of making custom turbo manifolds and parts for the Cruze / Sonic community. Who knows what else it could lead into as I work on more projects in the future.

You can even cut them in half and sharpen both ends just so your spending more time welding and less time sharpening tungsten. Instead of weld 2 inches dip and sharpen you can weld two inches dip and flip lol another thing when welding stainless more CFH 15-30 depending on cup but anymore your gonna get turbulence less not enough coverage depending on your cup but 10 is way low. Sharpen your tip by placing it in a drill and then apply it to a bench grinder for a perfectly sharp tip

I used to tig weld in a argon box. There's a machine that looks like a table top pencil sharpener that will make a perfect tip of those tungsten electrodes.
Also after a while three tips get worn out and if they happens when you weld the peddles will look like poo. You can sharpen both ends of the electrodes as well and flip it when needed.
Also when you start out make a small puddle and then work your flow from that. It will help fill in some spots. Also a nice magnifier will help get a better view of the welds and use a nice brush to clean the welds.
Using alcohol before you weld an area helps too.

Stop lifting the torch when you feed the filler, steady torch 1/8 to puddle and not only keep the gas on the bead after you break the arc but keep the filler in the gas too.

You don't use dope on those threads. Or anything. Just make sure the nose is clean.

      Short answer, no.
Long answer, yes. Look up DC tig welding aluminum in which you would need helium rather than Argon.
