Many thanks to Tom Pinto (who had Joseph De Luca's son, Joe Jr., as a high school guidance counselor) for providing additional information about the composer. Mr. Pinto was generous enough to share the following recollections of Joseph De Luca:
One of the things Joe Jr. got from his dad was a saying "Music first, then notes". Too many of the soloists play a million notes a minute that say nothing. Joe Sr. thought the euphonium should always sing. Most of his teaching was based on books of hand copied Italian Bel Canto studies, and opera arias.
Joe Jr. played his dad's horn, a Conn with short stroke valves. Coming from the Besson (tuba valve on a euphonium) tradition, that horn was a delight to play. Bright, but very easy to color. It was hard to fill out the low notes, but being non compensating, it could have a shorter valve block as it did not require the extra set of holes.
