- Live from the Sydney Opera House. Perhaps a rarity, I don't think this has been posted on youtube at least. Joan performed as the finale to the "Concert for World Peace" at the Sydney Opera House on 19 August, 1984. On Possum Records, a bargain op shop buy for $1, the vinyl is in pristine condition and offers a fantastic rich sound. This was towards the end of Joan's career, and she gives a fantastic performance. AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE! :)

Thank you so much for sharing. Her voice is in remarkable shape for 58 years old. The trills were marvelous, and the high Eb was very secure and ringing.
Stunning as per usual!
Wow, absolutely wonderful! This is definitely a rarity I hadn't come across before. Thank you so much!
+Matey Yanakiev If you like Sutherland rarities - do a CZcams search for her live recording of arias from Idomeneo, which she performed with the Australian Opera playing Elettra. Rare and wonderful!
The incomparable Joan Sutherland.
Great post! The sound quality is splendid. And as always, Dame Sutherland is brilliant.
I think that this was mastered slightly high....but what an interesting post! And what a great High Eflat!!
I used to have this on VHS (until the tape fell apart from old age), it was a brilliant concert. Paul Tortelier was on a tour in Sydney so we were lucky enough to have both him and Maude Tortelier doing a cello duet in the same concert. Sadly my VHS tape of the concert fell to bits just before the advent of CZcams and posting vids!!
Thanks CallasFan for sharing! :) Are you from Australia? Nice!!
Joan Lover
I think this version is somewhat higher than the original version. one key or 1b key is highered. It may be a matter of recording problem.
I think you are right!
+george prentice It sound's to me between high Eflat and high E. Astonishing tone at this age. She was wonderfull!!!!!
Could you please upload the whole concert?? The sound is fantastic!!!!
OperaMyWorld I can, but this is the only track Joan sang. The rest is various instrumental classical tracks.
Thank yo!!! So happy to see your Great Uploads Again!!!
Yes... It's higher than the original... I don't believe Sutherland was able to sing this higher at this age in 1985... So why is this higher? The original pitch is something sweeter by the way.
Willian rodrigues pereira this often happens In copying originals. As soon as I hear a fast vibrato I know it’s higher.
Yes, the pitch is slightly higher than was actually sung. This was not uncommon back in the era of vinyl when increasing the pitch (or speed) was done in order to ensure there was enough room on the record for every song. While Sutherland did start transposing a number of her roles by the 80s, she continued to go for the final E-flat in Lucia up to and including her 1986 performance in Sydney. She did one final Lucia in Spain in 1988 or 89 but that was transposed down. After 1986, she stopped singing E-flats publicly.
@@timtonruben359 CORRECTION This was not uncommon back in the era of shellacs (78s) when decreasing the recording speed(e.g 76 rpm or slower) was done in order to ensure there was enough room on the record for entire song. Thus sounds too high when played at standard 78 rpm.
However this is NOT at all common at all during vinyl era(33 1/3 rpm) with official LPs. It often happened however with pirate records like HRE, MRF UORC etc, though.
I've owned and loved this for decades. One of her best performances of the mad scene and only 34 years into her career. Just think how tattered Callas sounded by the time she was 34 years old.
Joan sounds pretty old here too. I prefer her 60s voice because after that, she almost souunded as bad as callas
@@voilosapete4731 I respectfully disagree. No, she doesn’t sound 35 or 40, but have I guarantee you never heard Callas sing anything above an A at least late in her short career. That’s because she couldn’t. Sutherland rang those notes dude.
