To stop bullying in America depends on the neighborhood and city:
In Chicago Illinois.... to stop bullying it's done with a gun and someone ending up in the morgue.
Inside the school at MIT... to stop bullying it's done by technically sabotaging the individual such as their car no longer works.
Inside some preppy high school... it's done with social media pressure of other students and maybe the school.

I remember the anti-bullying at my school in the Netherlands. Keep in mind, there was no bullying before this right. The kids were too young, they still needed to learn how to do that. "Wait, how are we going to teach kids that bullying is bad?" "Make a story out of it, and make sure to add as many different forms of bullying as possible. We want kids to know that all of this is bad."
So yeah, the anti-bullying at my school actually introduced and taught kids how to bully, not how to stand up to it. Great job!
PS.: The teachers also like to bully kids for being irregular, and would ignore anyone who needed help. Unless you were a (regular) girl, then you got help and favours whether you needed it or not. You could also be treated better if you were blond with blue (or sometimes green) eyes and were loud, nagging and rich. If you were quiet, polite, and had a regular income you had no privilege and were forgotten about. Though if you were blond, with blue eyes but you were Polish you got nothing as well.
That school was sh*t, others were way better.

I hadn't realized or remembered how mean kids could be at such a tender age.. when he told me that he would get in trouble if he 'fights' back, I told him, "Never hit some one, but if someone hits you, you hit them back as hard as you can and I'll be the on who deals with the school." Also, I have always told my kids, "Evil is allowed to persist if others just stand there and do nothing! You won't be in trouble with me for helping to defend other kids getting bullied, in fact I will reward you!" Great video!

Whereas my kids were bullied from time to time when they were little, now they are looked at as leaders among their peers with strong boundaries and nobody dares to mess with them, and other kids know they can come to them with problems. I dealt with a lot of sexism in elementary school for being a tomboy. I was bullied by my classmates and during lunch I would go out and play soccer in the field every day. The rest of the people out there playing were guys, I was the only girl, and a lot of boys bullied me for it. They would insult me, bump into me, try to twist the rules and say I did a foul when I didn't. The only people who stood up for me were some of the guys on my team who just wanted to win, then the next day I wasn't on their team and they would bully me too. I think part of it was I was really good and that made their fragile little manhoods feel in danger. I even got beat up sometimes. When I told the adults, these were their very words, "Then don't play" "Go on the swings with the other girls" So they weren't the ones that needed to change, I did. I can't be a girl and enjoy physical activity apparently. Soccer was my passion, but they wanted me to give it up. Not only that, but I was also talked to by adults in the past that I wasn't ladylike enough(which was frustrating as hell because I was a very well behaved kid but they treated me like a savage anyway. A girl who doesn't care about getting her clothes dirty? WHAAAT?! SHE MUST BE THE SPAWN OF SATAN!), or I only liked sports because I was being rebellious, but they didn't seem to understand that I just genuinely love physical activity. One time a boy tried to beat me up after school and I just ran away and he couldn't catch up to me. That happened a couple more times then one time he grabbed onto my backpack, I didn't have much of a choice so I fought him and won. Apparently, that REALLY hurt his fragile manhood because he came with a group of people, some of them holding ROCKS, and beat me up with that. It was really painful, and I got out my insulated metal water bottle and whacked a couple of them with that, I broke 2 peoples noses and gave one of them a concussion, and they ran away after a couple swings. They told some adults, I told my parents and some adults, and the school wanted to suspend ME for hurting them. Nevermind that THEY were the ones who started it, and they've been bullying me for a long time, and they gave me a lot of bruises and SPLIT MY CHIN OPEN. No, you can't fight back against someone beating you up and breaking noses isn't "ladylike". My parents were furious and sued the school, thank God they won and I didn't get suspended. I was still bullied after that, but it wasn't quite as bad, people didn't mess with me as much because they knew I fought back and my parents would support me. I only had 2 people try to hit me after that and I got detention for fighting back, but at least the other kids did too.

The way schools are handling situations like this is so stupid. Like why do they reprimand the victim for punching their attacker, when it was the attacker who also punched the victim AND started it. The victim usually gets in more trouble than the bully!!! If you want to promote bullying people, I can't think of a better way to do it. Don't they think they should punish bullies so they learn not to be dicks when they grow up? And why do they punish someone for standing up for themselves going, "violence isn't the answer" but what do they expect them to do, LET them be beat up and potentially seriously injured? Won't that also teach them to be walked all over when they grow up?

See, I was really lucky. I went to a high school where bullying just wasn't really a thing. Everybody either minded their own business or there were friends across all sorts of weird groups, like popular rich jocks hanging out with the nerdy weebs who would Naruto run in the halls. We even had an "anti-bullying" assembly and when the speaker asked the students "what do you do when you see someone bullying someone?" everyone just kind of went, "Uhhhhh...... That doesn't happen here?"
That said, I've heard absolute horror stories from other friends and family members at different schools and it is incredibly sad how some kids can just get away with that crap. As an awkward dorky kid myself, I am pretty sure if I had gone to any other school, I probably would have been bullied relentlessly.

I mean it was baaad they kept throwing things at me, pushing and hitting me, and calling me names for no damn reason and it was constant. I told a teacher and she said “what do you want me to do about it?” So one day during recess I decided to ask for help…. By walking to the “popular kids” bleacher and going straight to the most popular boy in my entire school. I told him I was being bullied and he brought out a yearbook and made me point out every boy who was bullying me. In middle school we had to watch a video about stopping bullying. In the acted out skit the solution was going up to the bully and firmly saying "Hey! This school has rules!" The bullies would then (according to the video) run away terrified.
This definitely stopped bullying. It definitely did NOT result in an entire school of preteens randomly shouting "Hey! This school has rules!" in the hallways and everyone in the vicinity erupting into hysterical fits of laughter. And it certainly didn't result in is STILL making fun of it 20 odd years later.

Not only did this stop the bullying right away, but a nearby PE teacher witnessed the exchange, walked over and patted me on the back for standing up for myself.
He did offer some advice though "next time wait til you're outside of school, because some other teachers have modern ideas and you might get in trouble".

My little brother had been constantly bullied in his middle school (the school is known for not caring, take note for later) and It had gotten to the point that it wasn't bullying anymore, it was straight up ASSAULT. So we called the school and after 3 different occasions of assault and reporting, the kid finally got on trouble... he got a fucking PHONE CALL home. Didn't happen for a month after that, but when it did, my brother was recording it because he was out of the schools camera view. After showing the school proof, my brother got SUSPENDED for recording on school property and the other kid just got in school detention. We pulled my brother out of school and made him homebound. He returned in 7th grade, 2nd week of school and he was held down by 4 kids and beaten up by a 5th. Nobody apparently saw even though it was during class exchange. A few days later, I opted to walk my brother down the school path and i waited and then I saw my brother walking down. He was playing on his phone and I saw this group of 4 kids rush up behind him and I swear I've never ran faster in my LIFE, 1 kid ripped off his mask and shoved him to the ground, 2 kids started to beat on him and the 4th was recording it and laughing. I got up there and I grabbed the 1st kid by the bag and threw him into the ditch, then I pushed the 3rd and 4th kid to the ground and started to beat the shit out of them while the 1st and 4th kid ran away and I screamed "Don't you ever fuck with my brother again you little bitchass pussies" at the top of my lungs and I helped my brother back up while the other kids started to run away. I comforted him and called my parents and explained they needed to come and pick us up since my brother vomited while being kicked and he could have gotten an injury inside that we couldn't see. He had bruising up and down his back, stomach, and arms and I picked him up on my back and walked up into the school to get the nurse. I remember it all so brightly and the rage I still feel when I think about it makes my blood boil. He's back on homebound now and going back next year and I hope nobody fucks with him ever again. Being in wrestling for 4 years paid off in muscles. The American school system is so horrible. For an update, since the school decided to so nothing about it even though they have the kids identified, we are suing the school and we have an amazing lawyer and we have so much evidence that they barely stand a chance. Wish us luck.
Edit: Nothing has been done (not huge) but our lawyer has been collecting info and working his way around the law. The courts are backed up, the earliest time we'll get in is around July, which sucks.

There was this one kid in my class that I HATED! No one in the class liked him and the teachers hated him. He was always annoying others, he was very distracting in class, he got in pointless arguments and generally there was nothing good about him.
An important thing to know, is he was a coward. A bit like a chihuahua always barking, but as soon there was any danger, they run away.
At one point we arm wrestled and I won. Then he said “let’s try again”, I won. The third time I also won.
A couple of days after that (I don’t remember why) we got into an argument. I was having a bad day and the teachers were gone.
He said something VERY personal and I just snapped.
I got up and (the tempo between running and walking) went towards him.
I began shouting and grabbed him.
I shakes him and let out a lot of steam (how I really felt about him).
He was scared and I pushed him hard away.
After that he didn’t bother me.
My dad also had problems with bullying, so he slammed a heavy door in the bully’s face.
Remember to do it when the teachers are away.
I was told on the previous schools to “JusT IGnoRe IT” and “SaY stOP” and “TeLL a TeaChER” and “tell THe BuLLy’s ParENts”
The parents just said the previous bully was “misunderstood” and “wanted to be friends”
I don’t see how calling me an ugly idiot and pushing me in the hallway is a sign of friendship (he only did it when the teachers weren’t there)

I feared they would feel embarrassed about me being bullied, especially as my grades suffered during that period. I remember my teacher knew I was being bullied; sometimes she even humiliated me in front of other students for fun, making her a part of the problem. When the bullying escalated to near harassment by a classmate, I confronted the teacher. I told her that if she didn't intervene and stop the bullying, I would take serious action. It was only then that she began to make an effort to protect me, likely out of fear that I might report her to the Ministry of Education or higher authorities. I was left feeling desperate and alone. Apparently, the fact that I defended myself was way worse then her starting a fight. My dad asked the principal what I should have done instead. She told him I should have gotten on the ground, curled up in the fetal position, covered my head with my hands and waited for an adult to come break up the fight. Which sounds like a great way to get brain damage. So my parents used it as an opportunity to take a vacation and took me to Disneyland. I remember my mom wanted to punish us for having the party but my dad asked us if anyone was drinking, we said yes. He asked if anyone drove drunk and we told him if they didn't have a sober driver we let them sleep over down stairs. The sad truth is that teachers often have less means at their disposal to stop the bullying than the kids do. The easiest way to achieve that was to keep teachers from filing or reporting discipline problems. Lowered the official numbers, but obviously created a garbage environment to work in, let alone try to learn as a child. Damn near everything had to be handled in class, by me, either by working with the parents directly or a very hands on and direct approach with the students. Not saying I did the best job with it at all, but I tried to be honest with them about my limitations and mistakes.
Once one of my (10 year old) students reported to me that she was petitioned to 'come inside and see his bike' by a strange guy while she and her sister were walking to school. Being a sassy little thing that no one (including me) could tell anything, she told him to f- off and ran with her sister away from him. But she was shook up enough about it to tell me, so I emailed the admin about it. Got chewed the fuck out because it 'created a paper trail' and now the admin had to do something about the issue. Not that I gave a shit, but that's what I was working with, push back on reporting what was obviously an attempt at kidnapping or molestation. Pretty sure the only thing my students actually learned in my class was how frustrated I was with the system.

When i changed schools, they didn't know about me, on the first day someone tried to trip me in class, not only did he fail but I tripped him right back that same day, and waited for him outside after class to settle him. Just the fact that I was ready for confrontation made him back off and apologize and become friendly to me since then.
You gotta stand up for yourself. Respect is earned.

Back in my day in Korea, you were to do 3 things to deal with bullies: 1) You beefed up for a month and learned judo moves the kids wouldn't know hot to counter just in case you actually gotta fight them fair. 2) Write a note or email to your home room teacher that you were getting bullied a day prior to "the day." 3) On "the day," you fill up a sock with 500 Ws and swing it in the face of the leader of the group while he's unsuspecting when the teacher leaves during the 10 minute break. Keep pounding the kid's face until the noise attracts one of the teachers.
Yeah, you might get suspended. But fuck the consequences. Better that than live with constant depression and anxiety that carries over to your adult life. Teachers didn't do shit back then. You had to stand up for yourself and fight back to survive.

I was bullied terribly until the 8th grade. I was 14 years old when 3 of my bullies picked a fight with me after school. I tried to just get my stuff out of my locker and leave, but they wouldn't let me. I started verbally fighting back, and the leader didn't like my quick, sarcastic ass and decided to punch me in the face. To this day, I don't remember hitting her back. What I do remember is her laying spread-eagle on the floor a few feet away from me with blood pouring out of her nose and down her face with her friends crowded around her. When I grabbed my stuff and started to leave, one of her friends that wasn't even involved in the altercation hollered "Yeah, well I bet she could have kicked your ass anyway!" I just snorted and kept walking. We were still in the school. Right by lockers and classrooms, about 15 minutes after the bell rang dismissing us for the day. Not a single person, no janitor, teacher, or student intervened or tried to stop things in any way. Nobody ever contacted my Mom (Dad was in Saudi Arabia/Iraq at the time), not even her parents. I never got in trouble by anybody, and the bullying pretty much stopped. What little crap I did catch afterwards I was able to cut off with my well-honed sarcasm and lack of fu€k$ given about getting in trouble for it. Don't roll over and take their abuse! Bullies usually prefer easy prey. If you fight back it takes the fun out if it for most of them because it takes too much effort to try and get you back under their control. Ignoring it only makes it worse. Stand up for yourself, because you need to do it when you're and adult too, so you don't get taken advantage of and walked all over!

My answer was to be a bully myself without even realising it. And, to be honest, i didn't even notice most of "bullying" - my head was too full of abuse from home. Years later my friend helped me realise that i was also a bully, just not in a "traditional" way. I passive aggresively treated people like they were all mentally slow. I regret that now, i wish i was stronger and chose kindness as my shield. I also did it to my dad, but that i don't regret. When a person regularly says he'd crush his daughter's hand with a hammer or something like that and keeps screwing up family money, the person deserves to be called d.u.mb.

There for that particular trauma is not with me and there is no lasting damage cause It's too wacky to harm my reputation anywhere past middle school. Also being an alien is cool.

You do not need to be beaten, you beat yourself. But yeah. I lived with abusive parents and i had broken bones all the time. Still, the mental abuse was worse, because I never had the chance to put it to words.

1 broken nose later, everyone points at the bully as the starter, i explain everything, getting sent to psychologist or principal, then just: "I know he was an absolute jerk. Not the best way to solve it, so please don't do it again."

When I was in primary school, I was beaten up by someone who moved down from high school to primary. This led to my confidence dropping and when I was in high school I was bullied throghout school because of my confidence and how I didn't talk much because of it. I tried telling them to stop, telling the teachers, my parents and nothing happened. I wish I had fight back as I had done tie-quondo in primary and knew how to defend myself but, i didn't because school told us not to fight back. I now have friends and am not being bullied anymore. I still struggle with my confidence to this day but, it is slowly getting better.

It reminds me of a case that happened recently at a university in my country, there was a boy who was harassed and beaten daily, in addition to being insulted with racist slurs, one day he defended himself and hit the bully and scream to him to stop harasing him, they expelled him after that.
Apparently the bully was from a rich family, while the bullied boy managed to enter because a scholarship and had almost no money because his mother was undergoing cancer treatment, so that's why the school allowed the bullying, even though there were already recordings and complaints about what was happening.
The case went viral, and the university received a lot of criticism, but I don't know what happened to the guy, or if the bully was finally expelled.

i was bullied in elementary but since at our school physical assault is basically the rape of today, it never got physical because even lying about getting physically assaulted could get the alleged assailant in trouble. so all there was left was verbal "assault", and you could easily dodge the bully by just roasting them and their family alive (in game) and there was nothing they could do about it since if the teacher caught them throwing fists they were a goner

The one year I went to the US as an exchange student I saw the wildest bullying related things I've seen, I remember seeing a friend get sprayed with crazy foam in her hair by another girl that was constantly bullying/annoying her, she obviously got angry and hit her and the other girl started to fight back, I started to laugh but eventually tried to separate them both (didn't hit anyone at all because A) wasn't my problem and B) A guy hitting a woman doesn't end well for any of the parties involved basically ever), then the teacher caught us and apparently the 3 of us were all guilty of the situation happening in the first place, at the end they just scolded us and let us be, I remember saying something along the lines of "let me get this straight, you think that this was partly my fault?" And the burst out laughing partly because it was surreal and comical for me and partly because that's what I do when I get nervous and then the teacher insinuating that I was lucky they were leaving it there since my physical contact could be "missinterpreted", like, dude was treatening a 14/15 year old at the time

In my school it was weird. Since we were a bunch of sheltered kids the bullying wasn't as bad. I was bullied all through elementary school, I was called names, I was ridiculed, I was ostracised, I got my pencil case thrown in the trash once, had food thrown at me, and the occasional ball (usually a volleyball) thrown at my face or with excessive force. But I mean, I've heard instances of worse cases. Anyway, I tried telling them to stop, telling teachers, having them reported and suspended several times, trying to verbally fight back, trying to comply with what I figured would help me befriend them, and even getting physical. Nothing ever worked.

Try to distance from them as much as possible although it becomes impossible in schools, I understand.
Try to socialize with many friends and become a part of club so you will have people to help.
Hit Gym, get strong so you will be less targeted.
Don't talk too much, observe peoples behaviour and talk to those who are friendly and try to have good friendship.
Stay Connected to teachers, like talk to them, ask for help and show that you can stand for your self and you have good communication with teachers.
I am very sure you aren't in school or the age to be bullied anymore, however this may help kids who had similar experience.

It was different for me. Schools in my countries were and are still obsessed with "image". They wouldn't let anything bad leak out to avoid the decline in reputation. Fights, bullying, drugs dealing and all those stuff would be shut quiet by the headmaster. So that time i got bullied in 2nd grade, the school just paid my mom to ignore it and made up promises about expelling the bullies and shit. They didn't get expelled since it was their last year in primary school. Because of that, i didn't even bother to tell anyone the other time i was bullied, in the same school, grade 4, by my own "friends" and teacher. Wasn't good for my mental and physical health ofcourse, i was depressed and suicidal at the age of 10, and that went on for 2 years. Glad i got out of that, ended up being a bit more mature and had my mental illnesses treated. Man i'm never letting my kids undergo the same thing.

I have a daughter in kindergarten and she's the youngest and smallest kid in her class. Sometimes the teacher tells me she hit someone. I've tried asking my daughter about what happened and who started it, but she gives unreliable accounts... I'm still trying to figure out how to particularize my approach to it. Is she being bullied and she's standing up for herself? Or is she the one bullying other kids that are bigger than her?
In preschool she was bullied a little and I advised her to stand up for herself. Maybe she's following my past advise but hasn't yet developed the sense to determine who's being reasonable. So, now I've been discouraging the hitting and teaching her to walk away from agitating situations, i.e. anger management. But it could be the wrong advise if she's the one having difficulties. Nothing about parenting is straightforward.
