Good evening Russ, Salute to those who worked the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)! Those young men worked very hard to make it possible for us to enjoy this beautiful country all these years later. I have to wonder how many younger individuals would sign up in todays world. Oh wait, I remember you running into a couple workers back in Arizona on the beginning of this trip working hard. I think it would do a lot of young folk some good to do some hard manual labor. Glad you stopped here. See You Soon!

Very interesting CCC storyboards. They said that of the $30 they paid them each month (plus room and board) they had to send $25 home to their families. And "the money sent home each month helped many American families get through the hard times." Maybe we should do something like that in these hard times. :)

You are certainly doing a lovely road trip with what seems to be with total freedom to choose where, when, how, what time, where to walk and fly the drone, where to stop and have a coffee break etc. Beautiful country around that area. I enjoyed driving through it myself in my 1969 VW campervan back in 1988.

Wow, at 3:09, it is amazing how hard it is to see the homes that are there, with the drone. We are on a clearing to the right but because the house is brown, it blends in with the background. That is probably a good thing, keeping it natural. The drones do give you a nice territorial view of the areas you are in. Really gives him a nice feel for the area he is in. Hope he does that at Ross lake, going down Rainy Pass, the other side of WA. It is stunning!

Some of my family was CCC back in the depression. I remember stories. All gone now. 25 years ago I was in the great north woods of Wisconsin. I had a Jeep and drove for hours out to the middle of nowhere. I got out and realized these huge trees were all planted straight as an arrow for as far as the eye could see. Found out later it was the CCC that replanted the clear cut that was the top 1/3 of the state. Unbelievable it was.

    Good video today.
Sherman Pass is the highest pass in Washington State.
The mountains you drove through are the Kettle River mountains, which are part of the Monashees, which begin in WA State and continue well up into BC. Up there, they become larger, more rugged, and also they become snow and glacier-capped.
The Monashees are an extension of the Rockies. When you reach Tonasket and US Hwy 97, you'll be out of the Rockies.

    • @briankady1456

Mother Nature replant the tree when there is a forest fire. Just takes a few years before you see the trees. For example at old faithful here was a forest fire in 1988 and in 1995 or 1996 you could still see were the fire was in 1988. It’s takes years for a forest to grow, just think it takes over 20 years for anout5 to8 foot tree to regrow.

The lake created at the camp was Sherman Lake, on Sherman Creek. It was to be a small recreational lake about a half mile long set in wilderness along the mountain road that eventually became Sherman Pass Scenic Byway. A 150' long, 25' high, 16' wide dam was built on the creek by the CCC in 1937, creating the lake and camping facilities were to be built at the site. Unfortunately, World War II intervened and the focus of the government shifted from the CCC to harvesting timber for the war effort. As a result the camp was closed in 1939.
One unforeseen problem with the lake was that, by the 1950s it began to silt up as a result of the slowing of water flow in the creek below the dam. So, in 2006 it was decided to remove the dam. The creek was returned to, as much as was possible, its original state. The only remnants from the camp and the dam are the changing house, built in 1937, and the concrete frameworks from the spillway, now resting beside the creek as benches. The changing house has been restored and moved to its present location from the west end of the lake.
The site is now maintained as the Growden Heritage Site Rest Stop, about 10 miles west of Kettle Falls, with informational plaques along a short trail, highlighting the various aspects of what the viewer experiences along the trail. Among one group of signs is a bronze sculpture which represents one of the hundreds of CCC enrolees who toiled at the camp, while nearby is another sculpture of a pair of high topped work boots. We will postulate that these boots were placed on this boulder to keep them high and dry while their owner, one of the dozens of CCC workers at the camp in 1939, went for a dip in the lake which he had help create.
As well as washrooms at the east end of the parking area, there are a few picnic tables here and there, but no conveniences or services, such as vending machines, food kiosk or even a telephone. It's a great place for a quiet picnic and a break from the road, though.
