The Toll of the Sea features Anna May Wong's first starring role, and was the second Technicolor film ever released. Quite an accomplishment for a teenage actress! The Toll of the Sea, a variation of the Madam Butterly story, is set in China (Hong Kong) instead of Japan.
***Upscaled from its original size (640x480) and & improved the image quality using AI technology from Topaz Labs.

Note: I did a re-do of the upscaling of The Toll of the Sea to correct the aspect ratio and image quality. Hopefully, I was successful at keeping the correct aspect ratio while upscaling to HD and improving the image quality to look more "natural" looking. Wish I had done this correctly in the first place, but It is a continual learning process for me... Anyways, please let me know what you think!
P.S. The older version is now unlisted. But if you'd like a link to it, please let me know.

Thank you so much for this! It looks really fresh and shows what two-tone Technicolor looks like, and shines a light on the 20´s. Love your channel.

What a difficult move to watch even to this day. I warn you all, this is not for the very sensitive. Despite her youth and lack of experience, Anna May Wong is absolutely riveting. Perhaps she's matched the performance at times but she's never surpassed it. I think partly because she's not glammed up in the typical Hollywood movie star way as she was in the 30s-40s that we're so used to and here she looks and behaves more earthy, natural yet still so attractive.
SPOILER ALERT: I'm not joking, this film is difficult. It's filled with misery and heartbreak throughout. And an odd phenomenon with this film is, the first time I watched it, yes it's sad and I got misty at moments, maybe especially at the end. But the next couple times I've watched it, I cried almost throughout knowing how the story transpires. Frankly, it almost makes me avoid watching it a lot. It's always been in intervals of many years. And it's not even the ending that is the most heartbreaking, it's when she finds out her "honorable husband", the father of her child, is returning and she prepares herself for a long awaited and hard-earned happiness. She sacrificed her dignity, her way of life, her reputation, everything all for this moment when she and her baby boy would be reunited with her one and true love...And then...If this film doesn't break your heart, you're not even a human being.

Wow! Just wow! Incredible presence by a first time actor, AMW was only 17. Easy to see why she went on to become a well regarded actor. And unfortunately, it's also easy to see why she didn't become a superstar, being Asian. Isn't this story basically a version of Madame Butterfly? I've never seen it, or Miss Saigon, so I might be wrong.
Men have been doing wrong to women as long as there's been men and women. The story is universal- coulda been a doughboy and a French mademoiselle, or a Yank and an English rose beauty. Any mix of nationalities really, as long as there's a difference of power between the two.
I have to give this film a lot of credit, for it's innovative use of colour, for not yellow-washing, and for giving us the opportunity to see AMW in a starring role.
Thanks, Ms Gallery of Anna May Wong.
