I don’t like the word dreads, because there isn’t anything dreadful about them , but I don’t get bothered by it because most people say dreadlocks but don’t think about it in a negative way

Locs are just a general term which could encompass style braids, fashion locks, dreadlocks, hair in general. Dreadlocks to me are more lending itself to the warrior spirit as they are to be feared by your enemies. Dreadful. Dreadful to them.

I grew up saying dread locks then switched to dreads and still use it ,I honestly thought locs were just short for dread locks. I have heard both sides of the argument but I prefer Dreads over locs ,but I use them interchangeably.

Dreads becuz when you are melanated in this world, it's always a struggle. Locs are a great alternative name as well and I love them both!
I cringe a bit when people use "dreads" exclusively. But if they say "locs" just as much the cringe subsides lol. A lot of people find it offensive, however. So, it's better to just say locs.

my hair is currently like his at 1:18 I just washed my hair with African black soap and cold water once a week for 2 months. Now I can wash it with hot water and the locs/curls stay. I have an interview tomorrow and honestly I'm feeling anxious because I don';t want to get a haircut, but I feel like I need at least a lineup because its a corporate company

I mean i applied in person and gave them my portfolio with a picture of myself but im still kinda nervous lol. Either way im not cuttin my hair. It is what it is.

Ive always called mine locs. Not to be "original" or anything, but when i first got locs in the 8th grade (25 now) my grandma would tell me "stop calling them 'dreads'. Theyre called locks in the bible". White colonizers described our locks "dreadful" anyway.

Is the root of the loc suppose to be thin? I notice the base is somewhat see through and thin when it reflects in the light. I don’t know if it’s because that portion isn’t loc. I don’t retwist at all I leave them alone. I’m very worried! Should I be worried or that’s normal?

definitley feel the word locs has more of a spiritual meaning or just something more sacred than not! I feel when people refer to them as dreads there more unaware of their locs and most the time is just a hairstyle for them and less cultural and spiritual! I could be wrong but I prefer locs! when you look up “ dreads” vs “locs” in the search engine you definitely get different content that pops up

I understand why people don't like the word dreadlocks, but where I'm from everyone, with or without locks, refer to them as "dreds" not as hair but the actual person i.e. "you know the dreds that hang out at the basketball court?" So it's just the south Florida vernacular 🤷🏽♂️ it seems people that try to be "woke" changed it to just locs. As I am Mexican I try to just say locs out of respect and not wanting to offend anyone
