  • NOTE: VIDEO CLEARS UP 35 SECONDS IN. This is not a simple task. But you can do it. It is a great winter project. Take it out and work in a heated garage or bring it in to your basement or workshop.
To remove the louvred window, unscrew the frame frame inside the van. Then press the frame out (best to have a helper). Then pull the outer seal away. Unscrew the frame at the top and bottom. Open the louvered windows and unscrew them at the sides. Remove the C clip from the connecting bar. Pull the rubber from the inner frame. This requires prying the pinches out. Thread the new rubber in. Unscrew the three window frames. Work the four sides off separately. Pull the old rubber off the window or out of the frame. Wrap new rubber on the window. Put the ends of the frame back on. Put the sides on. This requires a great deal of effort to get the rubber to seat properly.
Reassemble the rest by reversing steps.
When installing the outer seal, be sure it seat all the way on. Insert the frame to the bus top edge first. The press the lower seal in. Work the rest of the seal in. You may need to screw in some of the inner screws to help. The screen unclips, spline peels away. Cut new screen. Put in new spline.

Thanks for the upload of the entire process. Mine are crusty and not working so hot. Stripped the plastic knobs out a long while back. Had been using some channel locks to open and close them, but even now that's not working well. I'm assuming I'll have to do just this. Rip them out, clean them off, new seals, etc... What a pain in the ass!

I realize it's pretty off topic but do anybody know a good website to stream new series online?

Very informative. However the movement of the camera work in one hand made me dizzy. Maybe a tripod? Then you can use both hands and move anything you are working on to the camera. Great work, thanks for explaining the process and sharing your mistakes! Rock on!

What a great video. Any special lubriant or greases to use on the hinges, so that the windows open freely and close tightly ? On the slider door, where should the window crank be ? On the right as you look out or the left ?

the window crank is toward the front on the passenger side and rear on driver's side. the windows were built the same, so the roller has to be that way. i think i used silicon on them to lube. mainly just ensuring everything is clean will allow them to move freely

I will add that VW did not make the louvered windows. The windows and the whole camp outfit were put in aftermarket by Westfalia and other companies. It is possible that there are other configurations.

@Brue Hoyt What do you do when the shaft that holds the plastic knob to open/close breaks? I don’t know if it can be repaired or if I’d need to look for new windows which I’ve found for a little over $500 per side. Any suggestions? Only one of the 2 is broken. Thanks

This type window as used in other campers, trailers, and homes. You might be able to get a replacement part. Thesamba.com, or your local hardware store might be able to help.

I order online for most from various suppliers. I have used west coast metric, bus depot, autohaus, and bugs. I also picked up some at the COVVC VW show.

    Try the focus button..

+Steve O Mahony I assume you only made it 20 seconds. The rest is in focus. It is an auto focus. I didn't know that the initial part was out of focus until the window was finished. After I finished putting the window in, I it was too late.
