Gilbert is a beautiful bus!! I wish I had that kind of money or a Spyder I’d take that bus in a heartbeat. That’s a great price for a completely restored dream like that. I LOVE that you put an original 1600 single in it!! I’m not a huge fan of the faster engines, I just want to be able to cruise and enjoy the adventure to wherever I’m going and everything the bus has to offer. Lucky someone whoever buys it. Wish I was in the market to take out a loan. Life comes first and dreams will happen when they happen. Peace out and VW for life!!
My maternal grandparents had a '68 that was nearly identical to this one. Brand new, it had those butterscotch plaid curtains all the way around. It also had a removeable stool that fit in the pass through gap next to the single rear-facing seat. I have great memories of that camper. Once my grandmother came to pick up my brother and me to go stay at her house for a few days. We were probably 10 & 9 and were playing on the floor in the back. She got pulled over on a 2-lane highway by a Texas state trooper, who gave her a ticket for going too slow and impeding traffic. As we drove away she said, "I don't want to hear any smart-aleck comments from you boys about your granny getting a ticket for driving too slow." We both cracked up! She had a great sense of humor.
Hard to believe what these fetch. I have a '71 which I bought 30 years ago for $800.00. It was straight and everything was there, but I still put a lot of work into it getting it showroom. You did a nice job on this Van.
Thanks for the tour! Love the eggshell pastel white! Any chance you are going to bring Gilbert to the TX vs the World race/swap next weekend? I would love to see that paint in person.
Great job Gary! Gilbert was a labor of love and its obvious you put a lot of love into him! Thanks for showing the time laps! Btw tell your aunt and uncle x2! Who's loosing there mind?Nice job filming jake. Nice job filming jake. Opps its contagious !!!
Mucho gracias my friend! I will say, been awhile since I did a complete resto(Ziggy). There are times in there where it seems like you will never get to the end, that is for sure!
Hi Gary, long time listener first time caller😅. Is Gilbert still up for sale? Fantastic work, beautiful. Job well done. Love the VW life video's, keep up the good work.
I have to ask how the hell did you guys paint that VW bus in the garage with more VW"s in it spare parts, engine's in it how and how long to clean it out? lol That would be a video in itself! But great work learned to drive a stick in a bug will always be close to my hart. That was a 1971 bug.
Looks good. Love a Westy, ive got a very early 68. Theres videos of it on my sons channel (he uses my channel hence my stupid username 😂) If you ever want decent repro westy parts, look up NLAVW in the UK, they carry most parts. My 68 has been converted to a Continental double roof bed, much more usable than the cot. Also the little table by the spicerack is called the 'whatnot table' in the user manual.
Hi Gary. That looks like the one my dad owned…bought it new from Lamar Volkswagen here in Austin. What’s your ask price? I also commented on the 914 that you scored last year, wanting to buy the 914, BADLY!!
awsome work ! question is the window glass and seal on the left rear the same as the passenger side ? im wanting to delete my vent wing as well on my 75 westy
I did not, sorry. I used my table saw to cut wood down to the same size and shape as the original wood. The old pieces were just rotten, but they still maintained their shape. I then glues them down with wood glue and then as they were done originally, sheets of fiberglass matting were placed over for added strength,
Hey, I just bought my first 74 Westy and was wondering how many keys does it have i have the ignition key but it does not work in the doors and somebody locked the sliding door last night.
Great question! Since antennas were dealer installed, there are all types of versions/ I sorta like that dual mount like I put on Gilbert. I put the same style on Kennedy.
Great work Gary! Gilbert is a beaut! Good luck selling him and whoever gets him will be proud to own him! VWLIFE!
Thank you for the kind words Nicolas!

Charles I’m gonna DM you and ask for a favor !
Great job, Gary! I’m excited for cooler weather and to get “Alfonso” my ‘71 Westy alive and registered!

Great job Gary! That Westy is wonderful!
My friends parents had the same bus. We would fight over who got to sleep in the top bunk! We were 12.
I love stories like this!!! True VW Life!
Gilbert looks great! Amazing work!
Great job! If I may make 1 suggestion though ...
15:50 should be your thumbnail along w/ a photo of the bus in a bubble 💬 caption lol

Not surprised to see Willy did quite a bit of the restoration. Alan

Thanks for the tour! Love the eggshell pastel white! Any chance you are going to bring Gilbert to the TX vs the World race/swap next weekend? I would love to see that paint in person.

"Don't use this one tommy" 😂
So in the world we live in. It wouldn’t start! Flooded. The dang float had gone bad and filled up with gas! Just let that needle valve poor fuel in!

It takes about a day just to prep the shop for painting!
Looks good I like the satin finish. Love the Baltic birch panels. I thought they put a access panel on all bays. My 73 had one.
✌️ Peace
No engine access panel on Early Bays.

The what not table!!! I like it!

I am asking $34k. 17:06
Hey Gary ! It's a nice bus !

Did you do anything special to paint the top? Or same process as painting metal?
You do good work Gary!
I have a 71 Westy just like yours. Mine is never been repainted or restored. I think your price is a steel! It should sell in no time.
Thank you James! I tell you, I have really loved driving it around!
Looking good.
Wow! Turned out awesome!❤
Beautiful Westie!
Thank you for watching!!!
Turned out awesome!!
I'm 6'3 and have slept in the upper bunk of my Camper...
😂 your not losing your mine 😂 someone wasn’t paying attention
Exactly ... HA!
awsome work ! question is the window glass and seal on the left rear the same as the passenger side ? im wanting to delete my vent wing as well on my 75 westy
Yes! Same piece of glass. The seal is not. Order the seal from Wolfsburg West, w/out the vent
@@TheBusGuru-kn1dt Sweet thanks !! :D
Did you do a video on fixing the wood in the top?
I did not, sorry. I used my table saw to cut wood down to the same size and shape as the original wood. The old pieces were just rotten, but they still maintained their shape. I then glues them down with wood glue and then as they were done originally, sheets of fiberglass matting were placed over for added strength,
Ok thank you our new talk that we bought has a little bit of wood rot
Hey, I just bought my first 74 Westy and was wondering how many keys does it have i have the ignition key but it does not work in the doors and somebody locked the sliding door last night.
You can have them keyed all the same. Gilbert has 2 keys
I'd buy that off you if I were over there and not over here in England. I admire your integrity 👏
Thank you John!
nice job.
Gilbert looks great! How much are you selling, Gilbert?
austin.craigslist.org/cto/d/round-rock-1971-vw-volkswagen-westfalia/7660003717.html
reasonable price for a full-on detailed restoration like that, and considering inflation, not much higher than 1971 MSRP.
Very nice
Appreciate it!
Looking good! Is that the stock antenna? I have a 71 and I'm getting it back to stock. I've seen the antenna mounted a few different places. Thanks.
Great question! Since antennas were dealer installed, there are all types of versions/ I sorta like that dual mount like I put on Gilbert. I put the same style on Kennedy.
@@TheBusGuru-kn1dt Thank you! I really like that one too.
Still in the looking phase, has Gilbert sold yet?
