49. Campervan toilet: revised version

  • At long last, I made an upgrade to the site of the portable Dometic toilet in the campervan, giving it a dedicated space which is easily accessible both for use and for taking the toilet out for emptying. This finally frees up the space next to it for permanent storage too.
    If you liked the video and wish to leave me a tip, thank you!

    If you don't cut a hole out of the front section to pull out the handle for the trap, you're going to be removing that front section to do so David. Also, when going round right hand bends don't be surprised if the toilet comes sliding out 😲 My door has a little lock and it still tries to burst it open on the odd occasion. It may be best to add a couple of slide bolts at the rear half way down just in case.
    Anyway just a suggestion. You have done a good job all the same 👍

    • @Vandemonium
      @Vandemonium  Před 3 lety +17

      Dang it, I entirely forgot about the pull handle!! I imagine one might well remove the panel to use to loo anyway, so that solves that. As for corners, I’d imagined it would stay in place as the friction is fairly decent to the floor, notwithstanding me pulling it about in the video but I’ll certainly bow to your experience on that and add something appropriate - thanks!

      With anchoring things down in the car or truck, I'm far less concerned about how everything will stay put during normal circumstances, and more concerned with making sure everything stays put during an accident or emergency maneuvers. Last thing you want after some git cuts you off is to have a shovel, fire extinguisher, or half full portable loo flying around the cab too.

      I've found some flat rubber stick on strips provide a good amount of friction to keep stuff from easily sliding around if whatever you don't want to move has a little bit of weight

When discussing this with my wife she will politely suggest's that starting the job half way through the day might be a factor. • @michaelhickman3790
    @michaelhickman3790 Před 3 lety +4

    to save yourself having to draw round them each time, you will notice that the little metal plates on the magnetic catches have small protrusions above and below the screw hole. All you need to do is put them in place on the magnets, then offer up the wooden panel and give it a slight tap from behind. The metal plate then leaves two little indents in the wood, showing you where to fasten it to. When you have put together as many kitchen cabinets as I have, any little thing to make the job quicker and easier is welcome.

    Great work as always sir! My tips here for you would be to make a simple wooden jig for your circular saw so you can always cut nice straight lines with it. Trying to cut straight is almost impossible otherwise. Aside from that when you mention having to wait for glue to dry a lot - I would generally glue and screw or at least glue and tack so that you can carry on working around those areas without worrying about clamps getting in the way or disturbing the work.
    For a simple jig, search on YT for "2 DIFFERENT JIGS FOR THE CIRCULAR SAW". The first one is enough for most jobs.

    Great video and a nice modification. Two things though if I may. I know it's a bit late now but I see you used the resin w in a green bottle I always use the blue bottle as it's supposed to be weatherproof. In a van there's bound to be a degree of dampness so I think the weatherproof adhesive may be a better choice for future jobs, I've used it a lot for exterior stuff and not had it fail yet. The other thing (unless it's too heavy to lift) would it be worth buying some non-slip matting to put under the toilet to stop it from sliding about? Either that or a small piece of wood just at the front to form a lip? Stay safe and look after yourself. 👍👍

    A nifty solution!
    Having myself been "decorated" with the laurels of a well deserved UNCLASSIFIED in my O Level exam in woodwork, I do not have your ingenuity nor your patience.
    I would have lazily super-glued handles either side, or slapped on those handy Mega-magnet type handles that (i think) are typically used for house removals of heavy items (not actually magnetic, but fancy heavy-duty grip device).
    Your solution was much more elegant, with the obvious bonus of no lean-&-lift strain on your back; nor spillage risk.
    Btw, a suggestion for your toilet tank: Instead of toilet blue, I eventually reverted to using cheapo thin bleach, 5% sodium hypochlorite when I used a disabled commode - miles cheaper, approx 40p/ 2 litre bottle. When diluted in water (approx 50%/ 50/% if I remember rightly). it was equally effective as proprietary toilet-blue. I don't know whether bleach's strong alkali/ base might bother certain plastics, especially if used neat, although alkalinity is of course appropriate for a toilet. I once tried experimenting with acetic acid (vinegar) as a toilet disinfectant/ deodoriser: OMG! an olfactory disaster!!
    It's just occurred to me that the price of thin-bleach selectively was substantially hiked 12 months ago and simultaneously cut from 5% , to 1% concentration, but even if you thin-out 5% thick-bleach with water (or even use it neat) it's still a far cheaper option (90p/ 2 litre bottle with pouring neck).
    Just by the by, there is of course no environmentally perfect option, whether nitrates or bleach, but bleach has the advantage of coming from an abundant resource in salt, and turns back into saltwater when returned to rivers and the sea. Waste water treatment facilities use chlorine disinfectants to destroy contaminants in wastewater,
    Thanks for another entertaining and instructive video, I enjoyed it.

    Well done, David. I was convinced that the loo would be thrown about when cornering and those magnetic clips would simply come undone until you showed that the bed holds the wall in place too.

    I do love your diy projects and prefer them to watching your drive around videos. Not that your drive around videos are bad, I just prefer these.

    Nice one David. My only disappointment was the Handy Vac was not Dewalt. I am sure their solicitors are busy as we type. Campers are always an evolution and you sir are evolving.
