- Being unable to stay away from home overnight at present due to lockdown restrictions, I decided to have a weekend "away" in the van in the car park. This is part 1 of that exciting tale.
If you liked the video and wish to leave me a tip, thank you!

Never heard of a “ridge monkey”. What is it, where can we get one?
I have added an Amazon affiliate link to the description but here it is as well: geni.us/Van_RidgeMonkey
@@Vandemonium is seems to not be available in the USA 😜 Thank you 😊
Patriot sells a solar water heater. ..its a thermos size container.. can be used to cook also
@@davidbagley1783 wouldn't you need sun for that? Very overcast where David was. Lol.
@@annettefournier9655 😅
David, I have nominated "A weekend in the campervan - in a car park!" for an Oscar. You should be hearing from Hollywood soon.
“I’ve got a blanket in my legs” one fo the greatest lines in cinema history
I am laughing so much, it hurts. I second the nomination for an oscar.
Using the egg box as an egg cup, genius!
Doesn't everybody do that when necessary?
We always do this when camping learnt from my parents
Great fun. You can make anything interesting and I am not being sarcastic!
Reminds me of a great adventure I had once - sleeping in a tent in the garden when I was 8 😆
Please upload part 2 as soon as possible. The suspense is killing me! LOL
Haha I haven't edited it yet
Your wonderful sense of humour and down to earth attitude is a lockdown saviour. Stay safe and keep well, David.
A coloure matched wardrobe!
I understand the need to go somewhere else, I myself sometimes wander from kitchen to livingroom.
I actually went to the garden center 2 weeks ago. It was terrifying but exhilarating. Also helped me spruce up my porch garden which made me happy.
Not as exciting when they are the same room. I guess David could hang up a sheet as a room divider and then he would be going from one room to another. 😁
I’m so very glad you were able to move the van to somewhere more scenic!
I may suggest that once you preheat onside of the ridge monkey that you flip it over and place the pizza on the cooler side. This will mean the top will get nice hot heat from the preheated side and the bottom will slowly come up to temp and cook by the time the cheese is done
I hesitate to say this, but I suspect the Campervan experience is making living in a small narrowboat seem like absolute luxury!
Started to laugh when you headed for the adjacent car park. Thankyou for a little delight on a Saturday melancholy afternoon.
Suggestion: Heat the ridgemonkey UPSIDE DOWN first then turn it over and place pizza in - then it will cook from the top AND the bottom at the same time.
thats what i just wanted to suggest :-)
And after the top has cooled down a bit - open it and slide the pizza across (to the warm top) and close the ridgemonkey and put back on the lit hob = turning the food over regularly will allow it to cook evenly and not burn (like with a real oven 😉). I assume you are supposed to turn the food over regularly as the heat is applied to the bottom, and gets radiated off the top
That really cheered me up! I have been ill in bed for days, watching various van life vids, mostly American, peopled by extroverts having glorious times in exotic places. But that wonderful British self-deprecating ‘ordinariness’ is hilarious. Loved it. Thank you
If taking a shower the NEXT morning, get the shower water from the cold tap the night before. Then it will become room temp overnight.
Good plan!
I love the Hancock-ian way you manage to make watching paint dry rather amusing, albeit at a level of tongue-in-cheek that post gen X'ers might find shoots over their heads.
Nice demonstrations of an up market griddle iron, and how to see if an egg is stale... floating upright. But most impressed with your monochromatic clothing selection... don't like orange or green or yellow do you?... nor brown even!
I am now in eager anticipation of the impending Part 2, for which I will prepare with a few cups of highly stimulating coffee. :-) Hope the crowds on the drive back were not too bad.
I've got a red jacket on, what more do you want?!! ;-)
Man, your videos really are food for the soul. And it brigthened up my day for sure. Thank you!
Thank you David. Wonderful to see your dry sense of humour back. We have missed you. The black pizza made me proper laugh. It bought back the hilarious time you baked bread ! I would stick to cheese sandwiches. Thanks again for making me 😃
I'm so glad you got the gas straight on you must have been exhausted after that long drive
@8:00 So, you have to heat the top side very hot first then flip it and put the pizza in with the unheated side down and let that side heat. The top will stay hot for a while heating the cheese, perhaps even browning it if you do it right and the bottom will heat slowly and that makes it less likely to burn. also some olive oil wouldn't be a bad idea on the bottom when you add the pizza.
Alternately, next time fold the pizza in half in a cold ridgemonkey and trim the edges and smash it together real good and make a calzone like thing. Might need a thinner pizza. We usually did this with dough, not fully premade pizza. But you don't want to preheat this one and instead flip it constantly, that's where the tool performs best.
hope we get a tour of the car park in part 2 to liven things up
BRILLIANT Idea!!! Maybe next month you can pretend to Not go somewhere else exotic, like the other end of the parking lot.
I dont know about that. He might need his passport to do that😆
At last, someone who shows the realities of vanlife. So many videos of people building cosy vans, but you never see them actually living (cooking, washing and cr@pping in them). This is why I built a dayvan/mobile office only: I’ll sleep in my bed, wash un my bathroom and eat in a restaurant, thanks. There’s a reason houses are so popular😀👍
So you blow the entire budget for this production on a self indulgent exotic location and had nothing left for room service or a plumber. Looking forward to part two. Thanks David. Cheers
I would try to heat up one side of Ridge Monkey to as hot as it gets and then turn the hot part on top and put the pizza in the lower, more cooler part.
Good idea, I’ll try that next time
I was going to say the same, I haven't cooked pizza on mine but I'm sure I've seen it done using this method.
And today I learned what a Ridge Monkey is. It’s a pie iron. Never thought about using it anywhere but over a campfire. Maybe if I’d ever had a gas stove instead of electric. Hmm. This is quality content. Thanks.
Yes, I think that would be the best solution. At the beginning it should have the hottest side on top. Please give it a try and let us know the result.
Exactly my thought as well.
“The glamour of campervan life” 😂
HA HA :D the "Only Fans" blackout section had me in stitches, I just love the honesty of this video, comedy genius.
And no "side boob" going in the shower David. Very disappointing!
How David, the master of puns! Did not change it to “Only Vans” I’ll never know. Hahah
'Oh wizard!' cried Julian, 'I didn't think we were going to have any adventures this holiday.' Julian, Dick George, Ann and of course Timmy, the dog, all jumped into Davids van with wide and excited eyes and chattering non-stop as to where this mystery tour was going to take them. With imaginings of groaning tables of tuck, lashings of ginger beer and vast KFC Family Skips of ice cream they settled down for the journey. The adventure had begun!
Could it be the water pump inlet hose is too close to the bottom of the container and the suction has pulled it closer and so limiting the amount of water that can pass? Or a kink in the tubes? Or squashed in a hinge or something? No doubt the famous six would find out in due course.
Only a 2 part vlog? But... there’s so much more of the parking lot to see!
When the top started to get warm, you should have turned it over and then put the pizza in. The top would have been cooked from the top's radiant heat and the bottom wouldn't have burned.
Just my two-pennorth.
I see Sebastian gave the same advice. So, great minds think alike... or, fools seldom differ. I fancy the former. But, I would.
A fun camping trip and no traffic worries!
I like your campervan, it's very well built. I love the cupboards too, very ingenious.
Thank you
Better to find out close to home you have a problem than to go out far and find it. See car park or what we call driveway tripping makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to film it...and that shower scene.
Only fans joke will have me laughing for days you are a legend!
Nice to see you are doing well and living dangerously as always thanks for the video.
How fun - your sense of humor is so enjoyable!
I’ve watched most of the narrowboat vlogs And after 3 years just discovered this Chanel, happy days.
Welcome along!
David I've been following your adventures from the start. This has got to be the funniest yet. You're a one off. Cheers
I LOVE your camper van! I also love the fact that you're getting to experience van life right in the parking lot by your boat.
Ha ha, I love how much more relaxed and sarcastic your personality is on this channel, first time it's come up on my recommendations...subbed!
Am I really more relaxed and sarcastic here hahahahahaha???!!
You are very talented sir. The anticipation for a new video is like waiting for santa claus, maybe alittle exaggeration. Still, always entertaining. As usual, looking forward to another new video.
Why am I watching this to the end and find myself looking forward to Part the Second? Because you take trouble with the production and you're one of the good guys! Thanks. As to Ridge Monkey, who named it thus? It's a sandwich toaster on steroids.
Lmao. Did you have to clean windscreen of bugs after such long haul? Some really good chuckles. Thank you... Can't wait to see water pump conclusion. Riveted. ( I'm actually looking forward to it very much)
Those eggs looked perfect I’m going to have two for my lunch now (who ever said advertising doesn’t work)
it's brunch time for me and I have eggs.
I know you're having a bit of a laugh camping in the parking lot, but it dies appear to have been a great shake down cruise.
So funny and so good. So glad you got the chance to "get away".
return of the king!
Another David cooking video! Hurrah! Looking forward for more Vandemonium 😁
The worst piazza disaster I've witnessed was a frozen piazza on a campfire. Burnt on bottom, frozen on top, and they ate it, and said it was delicious. I think they were half mad with starvation.
I cooked a pizza on a Coleman gas stove in 2 pie tins. Didn't burn and it was warm. Not all the cheese melted though
Fab. That was just the tonic I needed. Great life. Thank you for taking us with you.
Reminiscent of the fast show “this weekend I’ll be mainly in the car park”, 😂😂 brilliant vlog as per 👍🏻
Just love the sense of humor you have.
Thank you 🤣
David just love it - you are entertaining and you have made a difficult time enjoyable thank you :) looking forward to part 2
From many year experience, I can say there is nothing better than a stainless steel gauze stovetop toaster.
Thanks for vid....you have saved me a fortune....no camping ....no camping...no camping ...4 star and above for me! Pass me the fluffy dressing gown an the hot tub....
I was thinking, "typical pommie, doesn't need to pack soap". Then you go and spoil it all by having a shower ;-)
What I noticed was he didn't pack a comb and brush!
Hope you didn't find the driving too tiring. 😉
We’ve missed your jolly blogs vlogs or whatever you call them. A jolly cheerful episode. Thank you David
I have a similar pan by "Coleman" £9.99 bought in Camping store. When heating anything it is designed to flip the Pan over to cook the other side. It works great with everything from chicken to burgers and wont burn the food.
What you need is a continuous loop of canal-side scenery just outside the windows, like in the silent movies. You could imagine you were in the canal boat.
Made us feel like we should give van life a go. It looked like great fun to be in the van you designed and built and we loved the location. Looking forward to part 2.
So, Alan Partridge did get a second series after all. This is cheese, I've got cheese!!! (Only Brits will get this reference)
Aha!
You are hilarious. Loved every minute of it. So glad to see you.
This is a riot
It's hard to say why
Your humor is sublime
Thanks!
nice one - especially the loooong drive to the end of the car park!
This is so simple and ‘grounding’, and so entertaining. Thank you!
Along with the Ever Given ship memes, this work must come to be seen as a landmark in our civilization's response to the pandemic. Here is a man who despite everything refuses to be defeated by the overwhelming, crushing melancholy of lock down and who takes pleasure from the simplest possible things. In doing so he challenges us to rise to the challenge as well. In this fullness of time this work should become a video art installation in a major gallery. I'm not joking.
Everybody has five funny minutes once in a while... 😂 Enjoyed your tremendously adventurous outing very much - thank you!
Another video at last, thanks David!
So very funny. I was so excited that you were going on at adventure. Then you just changed spaces in the car park. I was laughing 😆 so hard. Great to have you back just love your sense of humor. Please keep them coming but follow the rules.
For making toast: they sell these handy little compact rectangular grills that fold down to nothing and work a treat on a gas burner. Something like the "Gelert folding camping toaster". It gives off the perfect kind of heat to create the necessary "Maillard Reaction" to make toast. But, you have to watch it like a hawk because it goes from anemic to burnt in a blink of an eye. Otherwise, you could try putting butter on your bread before putting it in the Ridgemonkey for a bit of "fried slice".
David, a change of scenery always does the soul good, even if it's just a different angle of the old scenery. Your van conversion is top notice, very nice!!!!
A "shake down" trip is always a good idea when coming out of re-fit.
It's nice to see you back with a new video... but I question the need for tomatoes on the pizza.
There’s no way back from this degree of sad!🤣 Brilliant!
little tip, once water is boiling switch off gas, keep lid on, eggs will carry on cooking, saves gas.
Proper intrepid!!! Laughing and loving it!!!
lol!! overnight in a car park is further than I've been in a year!!!
Loved this episode cheers David
Those back windows still looking smart
I’m still very pleased with the windows too!
Quite funny David... you have a pretty good since of humor... Cheers!
The whole world upsitedown and here is Vandemonium to the rescue with an old fashion camper camping video. The timing is just right. Thank you so mutch. I really need this right now. Hahahaha. Greetings,, Kitty.
This has really made me smile....I laughed out loud when you parked up. The pizza looked really yummy. I'm glad you show things that dont go quite right too.
That was a fun video David. I wasn't sure you were really "roughing it" as we say in the states until I saw you eating your eggs from the carton instead of an egg cup. Hope the camping trip smoothed out after that. Take care, stay well and do be safe returning home.
Lovely to see you back again!
Having a blast camping with you! 💕💕💕💕💕💕
Your humourous face is more deadpan than Buster Keaton.
Always enjoy whatever you post, so happy to see you again. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to Part 2.
It's a great idea to give the camping a test, it means you can deal with any issues that crop up now ready for when you are able to do your real road trip and camping. Well done that man! best wishes David
David... I love it mate... your so real... nice vid... ur pretty funny mate... looking forward to the next one...
I would have heated the ridge monkey then turned it over and then put the pizza in - the heat would then be concentrated at the top to heat the cheese and tomatoes more quickly - give that a go next time?
Coming up, David The Explorer trying out English tea with no tea, jeans with no belt and a canal boat with no tiller.
I love that you just touch the thing to see if it's warm, absolute mom that believes shes impervious to fire energy.
Which reminds me why my version of camping is a hotel without an elevator. Go David! Love the change of location. Worried about the Only Fans bit. Ha Ha Ha.
First off, thank you for poking fun at the pandemic, it is nice to see someone find a way to poke fun at the restrictions and travel bans while sticking to them, I thought your transit to the camping area was really funny! Next I would like to say that your Ridge Monkey looks really new, I have a feeling that with some practice you will get really good at using it.
Hi Ted. I am glad you enjoyed the video.
Let me be absolutely clear though, I am certainly *not* poking fun at either the pandemic or the travel restrictions.
(Please note I am not going to entertain debate on the pandemic here, as this is a campervan channel it is not the correct forum)
I simply thought it would be an amusing way to "go away" in the van.
@@Vandemonium just saying that it's nice to see someone making the best of a bad situation while being safe and adhering to the rules and doing the right thing. Still, your video of the trip was funny.
Cheers Ted! Much appreciated 😀👍
Showering that way was admirable dedication to van life, I’m sure in your situation I would’ve gone back to the boat!
I considered that for day two (but didn’t cave)
@@Vandemonium Congratulations! You seem to have the van quite well set up.
Loved seeing you enjoying your camper van even in lock down🚐❤️
Glad you enjoyed it
Great episode David, very clever and tongue in cheek!
Bahaha that opening made me laugh! Thanks, David. Love your videos!
I was glad I was spared the "skin show" during the tepid shower excursion. I guess the power consumption would be quiet enormous but they do make combo microwave with oven options. I suspect that option for RV/van life could be costly though.
Yes, probably need a lithium battery setup for that
@@Vandemonium small gasoline generator or perhaps an inverter running off the van's alternator?
Nice to see a proper cup of tea, my mom and aunt are noted for waving the bag over the cup and calling it tea
