    For as much as it rains there, you had good weather. How fun to be early hikers on these trails as they develop.

      We have had good weather so far on this trail, we had about a (48) hour part of a section that had walls of rain consistently but so far so good!

    I was there in 2007 when we planted that apple tree, crazy to see it now, glad to see its doing well

    It's wild seeing the old remnants of the Railway's being reclaimed by the Forrest eh?! Awesome hike and great job on the footage. Island qualifiers anyone? Haha
    Cheers!

      Thanks! And it really was wild seeing how much the forest was reclaiming man made structures when left to its own devices for so long. Really really beautiful!

    Such massive downed trees in some sections there, wow. It looked like one had little trees growing out of it.

    50:16 - seeing this called "Emerald Pool" on some maps :)

    Meades creek to port alberni is on the other side of the lake , old deactivated logging roads

    Was any section of the trail on First Nation land up to this point? What beautiful scenery and perfect weather. You guys deserve a break after Sufferfest2020 aka the GDT in June/July.

    • @HikingAmerica
      @HikingAmerica  Před 3 lety

      Yes, there was a small section on the way into Lake Cowichan that was managed by a First Nation, I believe I filmed this on the way into the town, it was a smaller segment about a mile long, there probably has been more that the trail routes through since then but a lot of the route has been on logging roads that probably go through specific First Nation land.

    Awesome hiking and commentary on this new trail. What navigation apps & maps are you guys using to record your adventure?

    • @HikingAmerica
      @HikingAmerica  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you, we are using Gaia GPS. It drains the battery when recording but also has been very resourceful for what we needed!

    What backpack do you use?

  • @rickrayn
    @rickrayn Před 3 lety +1

    That is Kraft Dinner or KD in Canada, not Mac and Cheese.

    • @HikingAmerica
      @HikingAmerica  Před 3 lety

      it does seem like the KD reigned supreme! will have to start referencing it as such in Canadian hikes!

    BTW, what website are you uploading this GPX data to?

    • @HikingAmerica
      @HikingAmerica  Před 3 lety

      I sent some files directly to one of the trail coordinators at the Vancouver Island Trail, so they are either going to implement them or not. Honestly, with how much still needs to be defined, the GPX routes would still be just a suggestion, very much impossible to stick to in thick bushwhacks and cliff-whacks.

    • @denelson83
      @denelson83 Před 3 lety

      @@HikingAmerica You might wish to submit that data to OpenStreetMap as well. It can help us fill in some gaps with routes that we can tag as informal or provisional.

    Where can we access the gpx trails? Thanks!

    • @HikingAmerica
      @HikingAmerica  Před 3 lety

      Hi, you can access the most up to date GPX tracks on the Vancouver Island Trail’s website, they have recorded and tracked most of the data themselves, and it should all be on there

    16:48 nobody should pass walkers on a gravel road going as fast as that guy.

    • @HikingAmerica
      @HikingAmerica  Před 3 lety

      We were chewing dust through this section. Loggers tend to drive fast since they are on the clock, and eventually the trail association is going to acquire an easement to put you off this road but yea chewing gravel and dust is not in my top 10 favorite things to do.

    Avoid drinking water at that Follensbee Creek, there is a foresty business just up the hill from there that dumps chemicals in the water or at least there are signs further up warning people of exactly that, maybe run off chemicals.
