My father, who was in a maintenance company stationed in Germany, saw a guy in his company screw up a hip fire exercise (ran by the Germans) because he instinctively dropped to a knee and fired his G3 at shoulder level. The stock was not extended, so the recoil punched him in the face and gave him a black eye. Needless to say he was the butt of jokes about it for a while.

Yeah, kinda weird, but Babuins and Ninja Pirates seem to find a way to damage you without really causing deep wounds, so long as you are wearing armor.
My theory is that they are either crushing your bones with their maws, and that the teeth are there mostly for gripping, or that they are sucking your soul out with magic.
The soul thing might seem farfetched, but consider this: if one plays with FreedooM instead of DooM (which Hideous Destructor more than supports, and is practically based to work on those models), you will see that Pinkies are replaced by gross, leech-like creatures. These tubular things have circular mouths full of shallow teeth, which explains how Babuins manage to latch onto you so flawlessly. When killed, Babuins will sometimes expell a bit of Frag energy, and they will sometimes drop their arcane cloacking devices, which clearly suggests that they are magical in nature. If they have control over Frag, maybe they can also store it and drain it from other beings.
So, yeah, in my head, when a group of Babuin abominations start to g@ngr@pe me, I """like""" to think that they are probably sucking my soul out so that a Healer will later use that very soul to resurrect me as a mindless zombie.

      @ZikShadow Před 3 lety +20

HDest's weapons and toolset very much allows for slaughterwads to be theoretically beaten. NUTS for instance could be beaten by setting up a loadout with a jetpack in it, then taking the invulnerability sphere lining the initial area before floating over to the exit button completely unmolested. If the idea is to kill everything, then even that can be arranged by breaking the invulspheres that'll bring out friendly archviles to your aid. The BFG in HDest ain't nothing to scoff at either, being able to wipe out entire rooms in a few seconds.
The main problem with HDest and slaughterwad is less the difficulty, and more that the game will go to a complete crawl before you could even fire a single shot. Since HDest is a pinch more complicated than regular Doom in terms of enemy behavior (like them being able to patrol now where they'd stand still if unalerted in vanilla), it causes much more heftiness in the thinkers when there's a lot of them active at once.

  • @pajamas720
    @pajamas720 Před 2 lety +14

Some tips for those starting out:
    - Classic rifleman and support gunner are pretty forgiving loadouts as the battle rifle works against both shields and blue armor and can make its own ammo using 4mm ammo and brass casings, and the vulcanette has ammo thats everywhere and doesnt care about drm mags.
    - edit the loadouts. I gave every loadout an empty backpack and stuff in it anything i wont need in a pinch like the ladder, extra door busters, and in general extra items and ammo.
    - derp 555 and derp 556. The derp can open doors and switches through console commands, which is useful if you know theres a ton of enemies waiting on the other side of a door that an ied or door buster just wont reach.
-the brontornis cannon is stupid powerful, it can one shot anything that doesnt have lives, including possibly a cyberdemon. its also lightweight. a rocket launcher with heat rounds will also work and is more common but heavier. find one or put it in your loadout with some shells.

@Mialisus The only real reliability issues are the ZM66 as it's the EULA rifle (it actually only takes something like four or five 3 round burst shots in quick succession to cook off a mag) The semi auto and full auto modes that the hunter shotgun can potentially have, carry a low chance of a failure to eject as the shell might not be hot enough to cycle all the way because shotgun ammo in the mod are supposed to be of variable sources of questionable quality. The rocket launcher dud you mentioned only happens when you fire too closely to an obstruction in either grenade or rocket mode, as a safety feature before the fins on the gyro grenade extend and the grenade arms. Think rocket mode lets it arm a little sooner than grenade mode.
Also man I see you everywhere.

You know, I think some purists might have dislike for this mod in the ability to just skip and derail the path of a level. Blowing through keycard doors, climbing normally inaccessible walls, etc.
But the thing is, that's exactly in line with this mod's philosophy. It's a realistic and merciless depiction of you against the enemy. You want to advance your mission and survive against the enemy by ANY means necessary. They're not thinking to show any mercy or uphold any arbitrary handicaps, so why should you? ANY means necessary.
Realistically, if you could blow a new path open or traverse a flank to avoid an enemy or get a shortcut, why shouldn't you? With this mod, you shouldn't worry about requiring keycards and going through the route that was designed for the level, you should worry about killing as needed and surviving the level by any means, mapmaker's intent be damned.

So technically this game is a representation of what it is like to fight in real life as a military soldier who fights in a world where demons and apocalypse is real as well. The game seems to simulate what it is like to be in a war as a soldier, having to carry heavy weaponry and backpacks, enough ammo to survive and a medipack for emergency case. This game is obviously not for everyone who are used to being a madlad going crazy with IDKFA and just ending the lives of every single demons as an undying gunman. This is technically a sort of simulator that challenges you to be resourceful, picky and extremely cautious with every door, corner and even behind you if you didn't kill everything because you might've passed em by. An interesting mod, to say, however, like I said, it isn't fit for every doom fan, nor for "Beginners" or "Newcomers".

Oh man, when I saw your first video about HD, I had this feeling that there was something deeper and more interesting that you were giving up on due to frustration, and when I finally tried it, it quickly became my favorite Doom mod ever. It has so much depth to its systems, and surviving combat feels amazing. Cheesing your way through levels also feels amazing, because while the mod has plenty of "fuck you" to say, it's awesome to say "no, fuck you" right back by doorbusting your way right to the exit. And I personally love the mag manager. The deliberate preparation for upcoming things by loading loose bullets into magazines feels like a nice rest in between the more intense action.
Once I learned the keybinds and the game became more an extension of myself than a clunky battle with controls and mechanics, it all really opened up so much. You're relatively weak and slow, but you have a lot of options and opportunities to plan ahead or even cheese some. It feels like there's always something new to try if one thing doesn't work. There's so much variety in weapons and items, and it's great to experiment with them to see what kind of kit you want to have.
Anyway, yeah, awesome mod and I'm sad that CZcams didn't recommend this to me until just now. Very cool to see you struggle your way through some maps and come out on top in the end.

I have never found myself in a situation in "vanilla" Hideous Destructor where I'd have to manually reload or keep a partial plastic mag. Just "clean your plate" and try to stretch them to the last five rounds or so.
Those things are not only lying around literally everywhere, but you can often salvage unopened ones from the weapons scattered about. Especially the chainguns and the HERPs.
Speaking of HERPs: you can reorient their cone of vision by dragging them or by using remote control. The latter lets you adjust their arc of fire vertically.

Glad to see you once again returning to this mod in better light, Icarus. This mod's probably one of my favorites in terms of Doom mods, and the community behind it along with the submods made for it ain't nothing to shake a stick at either, with modders like Batandy, Kegan, and Ultra having made addons for HDest.
The difficulty's tough, yet fair. With practice and perseverance, you could very much conquer mapsets like Plutonia and Valiant with this mod. Being able to destroy the enemy as fast as they do you with plenty of tools in your disposal to approach the situation or even evade it completely. Being able to customize your loadout at the start of a run also really helps for mapsets that start you off in rough places, though I usually tend to go for vanilla Rifleman for my runs.
Sure, I still go to other Doom mods every now and then (vanilla, too), but HDest is just something that never fails to grip me everytime I launch it. It takes a bit of time and determination to learn the mechanics, but once it clicks, it doesn't let go. That's also why me and the others from the HDest community helped built the Bootcamp map. To help shorten that very phase. I'm glad that it has helped in getting that click to you as well.

    DiFranco SPOS-E28
The E28 is a shotgun chambered for 12g buckshot. It features a 7+1 capacity, and dual action. It may be fired as a traditional pump action, or fired on semi automatic.
Not all shells in the field will kick the shell in the chamber out after firing, so it may jam. If this happens, pump the slide, try again.
It is illegal, but like that's going to stop people nowadays, to modify E28s to fire in fully automatic. In this case, you may get a message when picking it up of someone "tampering with the fire selector".
Aside from that, it deals enough damage to any humanoid to kill in one hit, has enough penetration to go through a corner or glass, and can roll a bunch of times per shot for armour penetration against head/legs.
It lacks armour penetration though, so any armour will stop it dead.
Still, better than nothing, and you can usually sneak a blast through the faceplates of a marine.

One thing I like about Hideous Destructor is that you can foil enemy ambushes with the wide array of tools it provides.
For instance, you can take out many monster closets by just straight up shooting the hostiles inside with the 7mm battle rifle. Or you can prematurely open them up with door buster charges, a HEAT round from the rocket launcher or a 35mm shell from the portable Brontornis cannon, which would also generate enough shrapnel to seriously injure - if not outright kill - the monsters hiding inside.
What about teleport ambushes, you say? IEDs and HERPs/DERPs say hello. Just make sure to stay out of the blast radius and/or line of fire.

    Blues:
Heaven juice, holy water, chunky healing things, or blended souls, who cares?
Blues come from Bluespheres, Grayspheres, and Blue Potions.
Bluespheres give you 777 blues. This will mean for at least ten levels or so, you:
Do not have to worry about wounds
Do not have to worry about blood
    Can carry more crap
    Can randomly revive people
    Randomly heal yourself
    Randomly mind control enemies
Grayspheres are Bluespheres but they give you Spiritual Armour in addition to the blues.
Blue Potions are suited to spot heals; One sip is 12x blues, for 144x per bottle. Each point of blues for free puts your blood regen rate up by 144x. One point is consumed per wound, so one sip should heal all but the most grievous of injuries.

Shells are devastating with unarmored and not shielded enemies
9mm is really versatile (bleeding, breaks shields easily) but useless against armored enemies and not that damaging per se
Caseless ammo are the most plentiful works ok against armor and unarmored but no bleeding and has problems at piercing magic shields (except when you use the vulcanette, in that case sheer volume outweighs the previous problem) also it has some penetration so if you know a monster closet, shoot it and enjoy hearing those demons die
Plasma is devastating on pretty much every enemy but don't try to kill with the direct beam
7.76mm is the good stuff but it's heavy and the ammo is rare to find
Chainsaw is a multi use weapon (you can dismember dead enemies so that they don't come back easily and with some patience you can even open a key door with it)
The Brontornis is what you need to kill whatever you are pointing at it
The BFG is way more devastating than the original one
Rokets go boom and demon goes dead (don't shoot it on the floor)
And to finish: punches are strangely really efficient if you know how to use them

Yeah 9x22mm deals 20-35 without a critical hit (crits obtained by hitting the spine)
4,26mm ammo actually does a fair bit of bleed in my experience, excellent terminal ballistics too.
7,76mm is memetic in terms of terminal, shield, etc. My problem is the capacity. With each round being a point of bulk, I tend to dislike it.
Plasma guns are funni. Explosive AR go pewpewpew.
      Punching is funnier.
Coming screaming around the corner faster than usain bolt and decking someone in the face so hard their head asplodes is HILARIOUS.

One good thing worth noting is you can put Derps on buttons and doors and go into your console and open them with a command remotely.

I find it funny how the way you have to play Hideous Destructor is the same way I used to play FPS games as a whole: peaking corners and cowering in nooks.

This oddly gives me Civvie vibe.

I recognise parts of what people enjoy in HD. I see the skill and effort that went into it. But I honestly still can't say I enjoy it. Endless stalling is not my idea of fun. I'm fine with slower games, complex mechanics, all that jazz. But straight up stalling for entire maps, entire mapsets, just to survive... Not the mod for me.

in situation like 6:42, bandaging is the best course of action.
you can use it without taking off armor, it stops bleeding as long as you aren't moving constantly after that, and it don't make your screen extra shakey.
    the optimal move would be:
Go behind the cover, roll some bandage over your wound, wait for few sec for it to be stabilized, kean out from thr cover, kill the zombie, _then_ use medkit to fully close the wound.

I honest to god would say that, ammo supply withstanding, "Shave and a haircut, ten cents" is a good rhythm to use for the 4.26mm Rifle. The first 3-4 shots are for knocking them down and the last 2 are for making sure they stay that way. Has worked semi-reliably for me so far.
