  • DOOM 64 was forgotten compared to PC Classic Doom, but since Doom Eternal added the Unmakyr and Nightdive made the Doom 64 2020 remaster, the game has been rejuvenated by Id Software and Doom fans. The original Doom 64 game and the Doom 64 Lost Levels (in the 2020 re-release) will all be examined here, as this is the Impact of DOOM 64. #Doom64 #Doom #IdSoftware

I think they might have called them the "lost levels" more for the feeling that the word invokes than anything else. Another wording they could have used for that same effect would have been calling them the "forgotten levels". Neither phrasing is really accurate in describing what these levels are, but they fit the aesthetic of Doom64 quite nicely in my opinion.

I never gave Doom 64 a second thought because of it's artstyle. I always thought it was a port with different visuals. They had no choice but to redesign all the visuals since the N64 simply did not have enough RAM to handle the original textures. There were also hardware reasons that it couldn't handle textures larger than 64x64, again, smaller than vanilla Doom textures. The severe lack of memory is probably also the reason that Doom64 has no weapon reloading animations.

    • @Keldor314

@@Curlyheart Well, first off, SNES didn't have hardware accelleration for rendering textures, so it didn't have the strict 64x64 limit. However, they had to make a lot of cuts. For instance, in that version, monsters always faced the player so that it didn't have to have all the textures for the sides and the backs. It also didn't have any floor textures, though I'm not sure if that was more for performance reasons or memory reasons (it could only pump out about 10 FPS as it was). The levels were also simplified, and the game only included a subset of them from the PC version.
There may have been other cuts too, but those are the ones I know off the top of my head.

I honestly have no idea how with the naming conventions of the N64 that the publishers didn't get how that horrible name would have people drawing that conclusion. And it's such a shame how long this game was in the dark before people started to show it the appreciation it needs.

      @darkprinc979 Před 3 lety +9

While I think that misconception played a part in how underappreciated Doom64 was back in the day, I think there are other factors as well. You have to remember that Doom64 came out at a time where the fps genre was transitioning to more advanced features like full 3d models for in game objects, and true room over room implementation in map making. While this was going on, Doom64 was mostly just another iteration on classic Doom with a few minor improvements like the lighting and the addition of scripts to allow for some more inventive enemy encounters and environmental interactions. We can have a much greater appreciation for Doom64 now because we're at a time where the fps genre has been iterated to death and we can pine for simpler gameplay over Call of Duty rehash #85. There's a reason that more retro styled fps games have been on the rise popularity-wise and Doom64 sits in a good place for resurgence, having largely been ignored this whole time.

I bought Doom 64 when it was released and played the hell out of it simply because I loved the Doom series back in the 90's and I happened to own an N64. I admit I didn't truly appreciate Doom 64 at the time because I loved (and was obsessed with) Doom and Doom 2 for PC and Doom 64 didn't really feel like "Doom" to me. This video pointed out dead-on why some loved and some hated Doom 64; it actually is an overall good game. I get what you mean by stating Doom 64 is "the real" Doom 3 as it would have made sense to title it Doom 3 instead of following suit with every N64 game having "64" in it's damn title. Though as far as the chronological story of the series goes, Doom 3 was actually a prequel, occurring before Doom 1 and 2 while Doom 64 is a sequel of Doom 1 and 2. Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil would be the actual third sequence of events. Of course, I'm sure most folks don't give a damn about actual story/plot of this series.

As a child I inherited a Nintendo 64 and DooM 64 from a family friend, along with some other games. This was my introduction to the DOOM series. At the time I loved the game, without understanding the legacy or history of the DOOM series: this was probably 2007.
Looking back, it is astonishing to think that this game was made at all. Every other version of Doom was a (good or bad) port of the original game.
By contrast there was DooM 64, an entirely original product with genuine love and dedication. It was far from a money grab capitalizing on the success of the series.
It has lost some of its luster as I’ve grown older and yet, it is an astonishing development on its own. Quite a mature game for what is traditionally a child’s home console. Again, I was a child when I first played this game.
Having played the original games on PC in recent years I appreciate those games for what they are. But DooM 64 will never lose its appeal or luster after all these years. A true cult classic even by DOOM standards.
If Doom 1+2 are the gold standard, DooM 64 is the silver standard.

The gameplay is still perfect, and the level design is ramped up (I mean, Doom 1&2 expansions and mods kinda have more in terms of developing level design, but still as far as base releases). I think the reason they called it The Lost Levels was because of Super Mario Bros 2: For Super Players and the sequel WAD for the Marathon mod Tempus Irae called "Tempus Irae 2: The Lost Levels" which was called that precisely after Mario 2. (Tempus Irae is mostly set in renaissance Italy)

So. When I was a young boy, I had a copy of Flux Magazine, which had Doom as the cover story. This was, if I remember right, when the N64 was still the Ultra 64, so before release. Doom 64 was mentioned as well, as it was in development. Now my memory may deceive me, but I believe it had been pointed That Doom 64 was actually going to be its own thing, but later on they licensed and made it a Doom game in order to use brand recognition to help it sell. I may be wrong, but that is what I recall.

Rented the game when I was 12 or 13 and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately had to share the living room TV with everyone else so with that complaint with being a two-day rental I only got six or seven levels in and always wanted to revisit it.
I was ecstatic to see doom, Doom 2, doom 3 and Doom 64 pop up on the PlayStation Store for super cheap and I've got so many hours out of those titles already while only paying about 10 bucks.
Same with Duke Nukem 3D World Tour. I would love to see more and more and more of these Classics come out like that.

Doom 64 is just the cooler Doom 3. Doom 3 will always hold a special place in my heart due to the atmosphere and style, but 64 is much better at mixing horror elements with what really makes Doom what it is. The worst part of 64 is that some puzzles need a walkthrough, since it's more or less trying to get the right code on a lock despite softlocking yourself by making the way to get the code unavailable. This is mainly the soulsphere puzzle with the 5 pillars, though sometimes you do need that little push.

I not only adore Doom 64 but I like the remake even more. For those that thought the game was to dark, try the remake for the Series X, PS5, and PC you will not be disappointed. It keeps the foreboding and dark atmosphere while still enabling you to see. Having said this I do take one issue with Doom 64 and it's a bit out of left field but stay with me...
I remember when Doom 64 launched, I had the Sega Saturn, Sony PlayStation, and N64. I had the PSX version as well as the original PC game. Out of all of them it is the Saturn port that still intrigues me too this day. The Sega Saturn port was said to be a different Doom experience as the developers decided to use all of the Saturn's hardware to make a unique Doom game that rivaled even the PC original (supposedly). Unfortunately, Carmack was not happy with this and made them completely scrap it. They had to restart everything and the port was doomed. I often wonder how that Saturn version would have turned out and was it anything like Doom 64? My theory is the N64 version was inspired by the Saturn's original Doom port. Am I wrong?
Addendum- I feel you should also mention the PSX port of Doom. It was the first to add colorful lighting making for a much darker game. The music from the PSX and Saturn ports was out of this world.

As a fan of both classic Doom and D64, I'm frankly a bigger fan of D64's art style and Aubrey Hodges' Doom PSX/N64 OST. Nostalgia aside, there's something about 5th-gen console graphics that enhance the creepiness in horror games...and even games that shouldn't be horror/creepy, lol. I'm not surprised that "PSX-style horror" games are now a thing.
I'm currently building a Doom 64-style mod pack for UD and Doom 2 on GZDoom incl. Hodges' PSX OST and the Core module of D64ifier (a mod that adds in D64's map textures and lighting). Not quite done yet, but it already feels like the superior (imo) 5th-gen console port of classic Doom we never had, heh.

The modifications made to the ID Tech 1 engine where Williams used there PS1 port as the base made it look visually more like the newer ID Tech 2 engine based Quake while still running on the original Doom engine code. It's basically ID Tech 1.5 the levels lack full 3d rendering but the objects, switches, and monsters are fully 3d.

The Quake 2 port on Nintendo 64 was similar how it was an upgraded Quake 1 engine with the Quake 2 assets ported over.
The monsters in Doom 64 were rendered in 3D but they weren't 3D in the engine. They were 2D images of the 3D models.

Doom64 = best doom. Just saying. I love the original Dooms, but this ended up being my favorite; and also fills me with nostalgia as it was released (and I played the hell out of it) at a great time in my life. I did miss the Archvile and shotgun anims (both cut for space), but the mapping was solid, texturing/lighting/sprite designs were definite upgrades while still feeling like Doom, and the change to dark, brooding atmosphere was welcome. Quite a few tweaks and tricks that squeezed everything out of the engine too: pseudo true-3D with functional bridges, room-over-room and just generally *much* more detailed and complex architecture compared to Doom1 & 2's maps. It's criminally unknown & underrated, and for some reason often derided as "just a port with better graphics", which couldn't be further from the truth as all 30+ maps were newly created for it. I consider it the real Doom 3 (Sorry folks, D3 was a good game in it's own right, but it wasn't "Doom" to me).
Random fun fact: nearly all D64 textures were created in greyscale to save cart space, and the game relies almost entirely on its in-engine lighting for color.

Pretty sure "The Lost Levels" is a Mario reference.
Either that or Kaiser's mappack is based on prototype ideas left on the cutting room floor.
I bought Doom 64 for about 10 bucks used and loose in 2001 in a video game shop after I bought my second-hand N64, just to see, and I was at first very puzzled by the game. After a while it finally clicked and I always thought this was a grossly underrated gem, a unique Doom game with a very distinct flair that also borrowed from the medieval/gothic horror style of Quake and was worth a play.
I kinda regret there was no option for co-op or deathmatch, but whatever, I'd rather have a well-made single-player experience than a mediocre tacked-on MP mode.
