My boyfriend was diagnosed with extremely high cholesterol about 3 years ago. The doctor wanted to put him on med's right away but he asked if he could have time to improve his cholesterol with diet. He started eating whole food plant based with me. He was your typical guy eating meat with every meal but he did eat veggies and fruit too. He thought he was eating very healthy. 6 months after eating WFPB he went back for a blood test it came back perfect! The doctor was really surprised and impressed. She told him to keep doing what he was doing and if he did want meat to only have it as a treat once a week. After 3 years he no longer craves meat! I'm very happy with how well he is doing.

I went on a whole food plant based diet specifically because my cholesterol was high and I didn't want to take meds. Total cholesterol was 240 and in 6 weeks it dropped to 132. LDL was 170 and it dropped to 78. My doctor told me that I need to get retested because nobody has that kind of a drop in 6 weeks!

My total cholesterol was 195, and my doctor told me I my cholesterol is fine, and nothing to worry about. My LDL was 122. I think these are not good numbers at all, and have been plant based for a few weeks now. But now I'm concerned my doctor won't allow me to get retested, because she doesn't consider me to be in the unhealthy zone for cholesterol. I live in Canada.

Most people would prefer to have their chest sawed open, the veins ripped out of their legs and sewn onto their hearts. Because eating fruits and veggies while not brutally torturing animals is so extreme.

Honestly, I think most people really think their heart disease, obesity, etc. are "genetic" and that there is nothing they can do about it besides taking a pill or going through a procedure. Their doctors literally tell them this. I know this is the case with members of my family, several of them have had heart problems for most of their lives, and if you ask about it they will say it "runs in their family". It's really unfortunate!! People just put too much trust in their doctors for their health. Doctors are good at moving veins from their legs to their heart, but they don't know shit about nutrition.

Tragically that was what happened with my dad at age of 72, but he started to eat meat at age 43. When I went vegan he began preaching to me about "how I should be eating chicken", and of course I was angry and thought he had no right to preached to me since he had a quad bypass. It took me 3 years to figured out my dad was WORRY THAT I WAS NOT EATING MEAT, since he was BRAINWASHED to believed you cannot be healthy without eating meat!!!!. So, was I later from my Henry, my Immunology professor.....not enough protein.....no good for strong immune system.

I was on a ketogenic diet for two months (eating eggs, bacon and cheese everyday) and my LDL cholesterol went from 85 to 146. I stopped that stupid diet immediately. I switched to a low fat vegetarian diet (all plants except skim milk and nonfat Greek yogurt) and my LDL cholesterol dropped back to 80 three months later. I was stupidly trying to fix my type 2 diabetes with the ketogenic diet. My blood sugar did get lower on keto but I could have done the same thing with a low fat high carbohydrate diet plus exercise and lowered my chances of developing heart disease at the same time. After switching to the low fat vegetarian diet my blood sugar dropped even further.

Midday coffee with "grass fed" butter and cream.

That was one of the factors that pushed me to go vegan. Now my total is under 130 and LDL is around 75. It didn't take long either. I dropped my levels within a few months of starting on a vegan diet. BTW I'm 57 so it's never too late.

Vegetarian diets can be not so great for cholesterol if you eat cheese in significant quantities. Cheese is mostly all fat and cholesterol. Eggs are also really bad for cholesterol. Honestly, eggs and cheese are probably the worst foods for your health in terms of animal products, which is ironic because so many people find being vegetarian "easier". Maybe it is, in a western culture, but it's only healthier in proportion to how much you don't eat cheese and eggs.

Thank you for this! I have been telling my patients for a while now that a post-prandial increase in cholesterol is much more important marker than their fasting cholesterol. Why? Because most of my patients are only fasting while sleeping, and only for the last couple of hours of that sleep. Many of my patients no longer even experience hunger on a regular basis, and live their day topping off the tank constantly. They LIVE in a post-prandial state, and THAT is what we need to be addressing. Partly due to your channel, I am making a switch to vegan. I eat only 4 non-vegan meals a month now (those are almost always slip-ups as I learn the ropes), and hope to be fully vegan by the end of 2016.

"So for many years you had high cholesterol and you didn't die, therefore cholesterol is what causes death by CHD. That explains everything! lol"
When nothing is particularly funny, the incongruence of an "lol" is often a sign of defensiveness. Note that Diaz, Mainous, Williamson, Johnson, and Knoll (2012) found men were >50% more likely to underestimate their risks of diabetes, over 8xs more likely to underestimate their risks of coronary heart disease, etc. (Table 3). Ana admitted 200 was a high cholesterol level as a 12 yr old. Kavanagh, Shephard, Hamm, Mertens, and Thacker (2000) confirm 200 mg/dl is a substantial cardiac risk factor. So, she did something about it. Serum cholesterol tends to increase with age but she apparently reversed that trend through diet. Neat, huh? She indicated an additional diet change experiment may further reduce cholesterol levels. So, she recognized diet changes do alter serum cholesterol and that she is capable of making such changes. These are the two main factors in establishing motivation and making behavioral changes that lead to improved health according to Marteau and Lerman (2001). This is also significant since Imes and Lewis (2014) documented patients who claimed that merely "11% were advised on a low-fat diet and 18% were recommended to increase their physical activity" (Results, para. 10). Even among participants who were at high-risk for coronary heart disease, merely 26% improved their diets to reduce their risks of coronary heart disease (Diaz, et al., 2012, Table 3).

I've had high cholesterol for forever. Been taking statins for 20 years. This year, even with statins, my total was 223. I went on a full-on vegan diet (no "transition" period. I just did it.) Seven weeks later--no other changes-- I had my bloodwork done again.
    Just got the official numbers:
Total cholesterol was 229, now 158.
    HDL was 54, now 48.
    LDL was 130, now 91
Triglycerides went from 223 to 97.
    Ratio was 4.2, now 3.3.
Anyone who says diet has no effect on serum cholesterol doesn't know what they are talking about.

One example being the work of Ancel Keys on heart disease (specifically his 6-country study) who was slandered by the Low-Carb community after his death. I think PP was the first to point out facts which vindicated Keys.

University of Harvard reported no actual increase in heart attacks from eating eggs, funny how you forgot to mention that part. Yes cholesterol does in fact raise cholesterol but it is the ratio of LDL to HDL that really matters and eggs have been shown to maintain a good ratio. My family has eaten eggs regularly for MANY years, my great grandmother lived to 97, grandmother lived to 95, grandfather lived to 88 and none of them died due to heart attacks oh and my other grandmother is still alive at 81. I know my family history does not carry as much weight as say a Harvard University study but that history does agree with their findings. Granted genetics have just as much to do with it as diet, and who knows maybe they all would have lived to 110 had they not eaten eggs, but eating eggs for breakfast every day sure did not do them any noticeable harm so I am inclined to believe the Harvard study.

Also, science is not this single entity that is completely conclusive and unanimous. There is debate and disagreement in the scientific community about a wide variety of topics. Saying 'science contradicts' something is unfounded and as ridiculous as saying 'scientists believe that...' The truth is that some scientific studies can be seriously flawed, depending on the methodology used. When evaluating a scientific source one must evaluate the methodology of the study itself. An example of flawed methodology is the use of p-hacking. Confirmation bias is a massive issue and the scientific community and you need to be careful what you believe. Always evaluate your sources and go vegan 😄

It is the vegetable oil, especially from the soybeans oil, where it consist of high level of phospholipids, especially the two called phosphatidylinositol (PI) and phosphatidylcholine (PC). You have absolutely no idea what cholesterol is and its imperative function in the human body. Even the measure is wrong. The 'serum cholesterol' level is a measure of lipoproteins in the blood. HDL and LDL are lipoproteins. Cholesterol, an organic molecule, can't be classed into good or bad if the measure that has been done is to measure a protein!! Cholesterol doesn't cause artherosclerosis! It is caused by damage to the blood vessel walls. Cholesterol is part of the 'scab' which is artherosclerorsis.

Holy cow, you are great. You are smart, informed, replies to comments, and going to make a vid about this. You are the best vegan CZcamsr I have seen in my honest opinion.

you didn't debunk it, the studies you cited look at meals with both saturated fats, trans fats from margarine and dietary cholesterol, so the changes can easily be attributed to trans and saturated fats rather than dietary cholesterol, that being said, while there might be an initial increase from dietary cholesterol in blood cholesterol, the body will usually lower its production of cholesterol instead.
    nice misrepresentation though!!

If fasting cholesterol levels are not acceptable, why is the fasting blood sugar level acceptable?

I always see you move your hand to do something with the camera or something at the end of shots. I'm new to your channel so I don't know if you've addressed this already, but just pause a little bit before you'd cut?

I dropped my total cholesterol 49 points and my LDL 47 points in 5 weeks cutting out meat. I am a 65 year old female. I will cut out eggs and see if I can get my total below 150 and my LDL below 80.

The human body already produces all of the cholesterol it needs.
And the only source of dietary cholesterol is in animal flesh and animal by-products. Don't consume dietary cholesterol, as it will increase your LDL cholesterol above the heart-attack-proof range of 50 to 70 mg/dl, putting you at risk of developing atherosclerosis.

I went on plant based diet and went from 214 to as low as 124 LDL, a 42% drop, but nowhere near your levels of 50, Mic. That said, I love the diet: went back to my high school weight of 165 lbs from 183 lbs; digestion sorted out; feel great; and feel like finally, I found the way homo sapiens were meant to eat. I was confused, like most, for decades.
