- Ferro Carril Oeste is one of Argentina’s most historic clubs. However, many may not know the interesting history behind how the club got its famous green colours from a group of Irish immigrants who had come to work on the railways in Buenos Aires in the early 20th century

When I moved to Argentina I looked for the club closest to where I live and found Ferro, that was 30 years ago and I've been a supporter ever since.
Feels like if you are anywhere in the city of Buenos Aires you are close to 2 or 3 stadiums... How many Stadiums/Clubs do they have? And you hear statistics saying 70% of Argentinians root for Boca or River in the country... Oh and I live in Miami we have a certain Argentinian player you all might have heard of, that's why I am intrigued. 😁

Brilliant video, i used to watch highlights of Argentinian football when i was a kid on tv in Ireland. I always liked Ferro because of the green shirt but never knew the connection with Ireland.

¡Caballito! Yo nací en Caballito, frente a Plaza Irlanda. Y viví en el barrio hasta 2001. Ferro es un montón de recuerdos hermosos. Un club con una función social importantísima. Los cumpleaños de mis compañeros se festejaban allí en el gimnasio del club. Así que era normal que vayamos un par de veces por mes. Y tengo una anécdota con el club, donde se practicaban muchos deportes y promovían a los chicos a competir en todas las categorías. Resulta que un sábado de 1980 más o menos, otoño, un día soleado, mi hermano, que todavía estaba en la primaria, estaba en Ferro en el cumpleaños de uno de sus compañeros. Con mi tío lo fuimos a buscar y como cuando llegamos el cumpleaños todavía no había terminado, nos quedamos dando vueltas por el club. En la cancha principal se jugaba un partido oficial, Ferro vs. Argentinos Juniors. Muy poca gente, digamos que había más gente en la cancha que en las tribunas. Así que nos invitaron a pasar, como era usual en el club. Mi tío me dice: "¿Ferro juega contra Argentinos Juniors? Vamos a verlo, que en Argentinos juega un pibe que es una maravilla: se llama Diego Maradona..." Entonces entramos a la platea y estábamos mirando el partido. No era un gran espectáculo y mi tío no sabía individualizar a Diego, así que cuando pasó una persona que era del club, le preguntó: "¿Dígame una cosa, no sabe si está jugando Maradona?". El tipo le contestó: "No, Maradona está lesionado y hoy no juega, pero si lo quiere conocer, allí está...-" y dos o tres filas detrás de donde estábamos sentados, estaba sentado un Diego muy joven, con un par de personas más. Lo saludamos, charlamos con él y cuando terminó el partido, nos despedimos. Quién hubiera pensado que seis años después nos iba a dar semejante alegría inolvidable. Y todo gracias a Ferro.

Yo presencié el último partido de Ferro en primera, le ganamos con Newell's no recuerdo si uno o dos a cero. Sacaban fotos los 50 hinchas que llevaron. Una tristeza que tan buen club este jugando el ascenso. Mi sangre irlandesa lo lamenta profundamente.

Hermoso video, muchas gracias. Vivo casi frente a la cancha del club y a una cuadra de la entrada social. Desde el piso 18 donde vivo veo la parte de la cancha donde está uno de los arcos. No conocía esa historia y su relación con Irlanda.

Enjoyable video, however I think Daniel's version of events in linking the Irish to Ferro are more his own theory rather than facts. Edward Bryce Robson was from Doncaster, England (although his wife was Irish, from Westmeath). Almirante Brown can make a claim to be the most Irish club in Argentina, having been named after an Irishman. Their shirt last year featured the tricolour intertwined with the flag of Argentina.

So, the most "Irish" football club is one founded by the English. What a surprise. Clubs mentioned like Banfield and Temperly also have British origins. Did the Irish in Argentina ever create their own football/other sporting clubs directly?
Other Irish clubs: Hurling, Hurligham, St Brendan's RC, San Cirano RC(St Kirean's), St Patrick's RC and Newman RC (Christian Brothers).
Irish came mostly to be shepherds brought by Father Fahy and came after the potato famine. Mostly between 1850-1870, most of them came from Meath, West Meath and Offaly. 7 Towns called the seven churches: San Antonio de Areco, Venado Tuerto (founded by Edward Casey), Campana and three other towns. Irish legacy is most prominent in Polo among them Juan Carlos Harriot and Roberto and Diego Cavanagh.

The Bullrich family came actually from Germany and had no connections with the british isles, and by the way nobody would be proud of them since they have always been quite a shady clan of turbulent characters, luckily enough you failed too in your prediction
