Conan once said one of the things that makes Norm so funny is just the “sheer audacity” he has to tell such silly simplistic, outrageously long jokes. The rest is his persona and delivery.
You can tell he’s a highly intelligent yet unpretentious person.
My favorite comedian always. RIP Norm.
The joke was Norm himself. Not caring, pushing, adding the right flavour, the lightness, simplicity and balls. That kind of perfect naive, sloppy, reperitive, almost childish delivery. People often don't get how that magic was perfectly meant.
He is just perfect at pretending he isnt actually a comedian but just a guy telling stories.
It's like Picasso who thought himself to draw like a child.
Norm is the embodiment of 'the trip' > 'the destination'
Love Norm. But his bravery probably came from the coke.

Show me anybody who could pull off intentionally stuttering through something like that while telling a pig joke on the late night show and absolutely murdering. To me he is the best comic that has ever lived.
IDK if I'd say he was the best comic that ever lived but I can say he was my favorite person to tell a joke, and probably always will be. His delivery reminds me of hearing a joke you aren't supposed to hear yet from an older cousin who knows he shouldn't be telling you it.

Yeah I always thought he acts when he is telling the jokes or even talking. but its so good I find it hard to believe. I dont think this is how he talks but its so good.

I think the stutters are real, he just knows how to work them for effect. Ive always had similar stutters and “uhs and ums”, and over the years Ive sort of learned how to make them funny in the right situations, even if it is involuntary (obviously nowhere near as well as Norm)

why did this make me laugh harder than the entire rest of the joke
I love Norm's stories. It may interest some of you to know that this joke is at least 30 years old, probably more. This is an old literary device called a shaggy dog. Not many people do them any more because it takes great patience and real talent, otherwise the story just falls apart. The story, like a shaggy dog, has layer upon layer of details (or shaggy hair) without much of a pay-off (or much of a dog). It's a hard trick to pull off. None were better than Norm.

Yep. And the way he weaves all the details into the story, as if adlibing is brilliant. As a matter-of-fact, he probably adlibbed much of his stories, since he clearly had a brilliant mind (or as that farmer would say, "a sharp wit").
Yep. My Dad heard this joke as told by an Aussie at a scientific conference in Melbourne back in the early 70s. Has been a family joke retold probably a 100 times in the years since then. Of course the Aussie version is filled with lots of “Ah mate”s. Telling it with the that Aussie accent just adds something special to it. Norm did an excellent job here though.
I actually remember this joke being told on Johnny Carson's show back in the day, by a regular guest named Pete Barbutti, a piano playing comic who was very good. Great joke for Norm's style of comedy for sure.

Yeah, I don't think Andy has gotten over the Swedish German bit, he explains his reasons and I get it but I can't help but laugh. I don't think it's a dig at homosexual people, I think it was just to make Andy uncomfortable, but I don't know really

after being a Norm fan for decades and watching many of these gems, i think I understand him a little better. It seems that Norm always had a subtile ‘Norm’ joke to himself, woven between the fibers of the actual ‘joke’ being offered, that he found funny, and prob wondered if anyone else would get. in this case, it was his use of big words in the farmers dialect that would have been above the farmer’s intellect in Norms mind. Brilliant.

His jokes and stories were always brilliantly constructed. It's funny when people, even very good comedians try to re-tell his jokes and they never get them right.
i think he was being ironic lol like HE doesn't think the words are above the farmers intellect but he knows that casual people think theyre smarter than farmers.
I picked up on that too, the play on words that people don't necessarily use in daily conversation. That's all it was, he was brilliant and very smart, but he never imposed on anyone.

Hilarious. No other comic can tell a long, drawn-out story like Norm could. Norm could get away with it, because of his voice and unique delivery…it was funny along the way.
I just about had tears in my eyes. He had great skills in joke/story telling.

The fact that conan wrote a letter to Don Ohmyer ( the guy who fired norm) telling him not to fire him , risking his own career in the process makes me respect him even more. Conan was just starting out and his show back then wasn't doing that well (or so he and Andy say) so he didn't have that much influence or power back then. Don apparently responded to Conan calling (conan) a disappointment. Don was a close friend of OJ and didn't like norm roasting him every week on SNL. Glad these two comedians have achieved far more in life than that moron NBC executive. RIP.

Watching these clips from the past I feel like the people who were fortunate enough to know him were really lucky. I didnt even know him and I miss him already.
Most of his really devout fans know him just as much as many of his friends did. Norm was the same guy with everyone. I'm sure he had only a few really close people in his life.

The 3-legged pig is a great joke and I love Norm and how he tells it. It was also funny the first time I heard it, when a great (and still alive!) guy named Pete Barbutti told the same joke to Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show, at least 50 years ago now, if not longer. I guarantee that's where Norm Macdonald heard it for the first time, too. RIP, Norm, we miss you!
I'd forgotten about Pete. That kink of joke was right in his wheelhouse. Another naturally funny guy who was actually a professional trumpet player.

Norm was so Canadian. His delivery and diction was so old timey, just punishingly funny. It was about the journey to the punchline. Keep 'em coming, Coco!
He reminds me of a lot of family and friends through the years here in old Canada. his cadence and diction and style i think has always been really Canadian.
The gift of making you think of what the punch line is going to be but then takes you on a whole story and completely different ending that fits perfectly with the rest of the story to make a perfect joke. Such a gift he was.

Norm McDonald's comedy on SNL [specifically the news desk] along with Simpson's bits written by Conan, were the main things I looked forward to as a teenager dealing with severe depression. His comedy made rescued me from angst and loneliness long enough for me to take things a moment at a time.
I had similar experience after my son died. I'd lie down next to my dog and watch every Norm video I could find. Only Norm could drag you out of that hell. ( Glad you survived your experience)

I love how that entire story of the pig being a hero has nothing to do with the punchline. The only relation to it is the pig has a wooden leg. But that's Norm, he takes five-second jokes and hilariously drags them out forever.
The pig joke is often overlooked, but it's so great.

This is a very old story and I knew where he was going after he said "pig with a wooden leg" but he still made it funny. With Norm, it wasn't so much about the punch line as the journey getting to it.
