I think homelander has a degree of respect for those who don’t fear him.
But in this case, he despises Hughie for the fact that he's not afraid of him and also because he killed Translucent
He can literally hear his heartbeat

The real ones who never feared homelander since the beginning were Butcher, Soldier Boy, and Mr. Stan Edgar
@Seasonal-Shadow_4674 He was afraid of Homelander in Season 1 but the rest of the series Hughie wasn't afraid of Homelander because Butcher, Starlight, or MM weren't to far behind.

I love Homelander’s reaction to Hughie since he was impressed that his heartbeat was steady.
It probably was not steady at all. But HL notices when it's because of fear or rage.
Always hilarious when she powers up as a threat to Homelander considering the dude could snap her in half without even breaking a sweat.

The best part is when she fully powered up and levitated, then blasted Soldier Boy with everything she had and all it did was knock him back a few feet lmao.
The scene started looking so badass and ended like a wet fart.
The writers need a way to power her up. She really is no threat at this point and everyone, including the audience, knows it.

Love the "mmm" when Hughie stands up, like Homelander is at least thrilled at the idea of someone openly defying him despite being an ant compared to him, he probably though Butcher was the only one...more than likely the closest to "respect" you can get from him, lol
Homelander is one of the most effective villains I've ever seen.
This was one of Hughie's most badass moments

Hughie has never had a single badass moment,or evem semi-cool moment for that matter 😂. He's a weak-willed useless coward that only ever even considers swinging at pitches that his more capable friends ("friends" simply in that they constantly pity, not respect him as an equal 😂) lowball in and set up completely for him.
If Hughie died the team would only benefit, lol.

They should show how strong homelander really is at some point. I want to see him lift a building or a ship. I think it would be Awesome... as it could make the character More demeaning and it could also back up his delusion of being a god.

He probably can’t because he’s likely never had to exert himself to really try so he wouldn’t be able to do anything without immediately destroying it, like with the plane he immediately didn’t try because he wouldn’t know how much pressure to use to balance it and knew he would just burst through it
