I am a dentist, and I have heard this trolling all my life. Mostly from friends in other branches. Some have even addressed me as a glorified janitor (no offense to the profession... deep respects to people who keep things clean). I just wait until they have a toothache and then take them to a janitor to get their teeth "cleaned".

That is so rude!!! As someone with chronic teeth issues due to genetics mixed with poverty and minimal dental care as a child and now having 3 children/pregnancies that take a toll on teeth as well…. THANK YOU for all you do. I have fillings in almost every tooth, I’ve had 3 teeth pulled, I have 3 crowns and root canals. I have an amazing dentist who for me has been borderline a psychologist for me through hard visits. The scariest work to get done that requires the most patient and caring person to do their job. Ps I can tell your an amazing person but how you respect janitors as well.

US trained dentist here. We are doctors, just not medical doctors and I would never pretend to be a physician or act like I do what physicians do. My patients call me doctor (lol or sweetie or dear, with older patients). I also wouldn't introduce myself as a "doctor" first thing when someone asks if that's what most ppl are all upset about - I would simply say dentist. We do learn about the whole human body though, at least in the US. The curriculum is pretty similar to medical school the 1st and 2nd year. 3rd and 4th year we specialize in oral health/oral medicine/dental specific classes. Annnnyway, all that said, we do some intense surgeries in the mouth. Extractions where we are drilling & removing patient's jaw bones, placing dental implants, full mouth reconstructions, IV sedation, disinfecting and removing nerve tissue, doing oral biopsies and so on. That's just on the general side. Oral surgeons are DDS/MDs usually and do 4-6 years POST dental school training. Sometimes our patients are really sick, I have to know about their systemic issues before procedures bc I can technically kill them . Ppl forget we do irreversible things to your mouth which can affect your whole body. And we definitely can get sued like any physician liability wise. It's not all just fillings and cleanings. But alas, the public doesn't care. It's fine. I'm glad most ppl don't need these intensive dental treatments and only see the most basic things we do. Most ppl hate the dentist anyway :'D

These are the facts, dentists are dental surgeons, and "doctors" are physicians, who depending on their specialities are specialists of their fields like radiologist, oncologist, etc. Just because theyre specialists DOES NOT mean that theyre no longer doctors right? A dentist is someone who simply gets an early specialisation. Believe it or not, we're still taught the entirety of anat, physio, biochem in our first years which is literally the same thing taught to mbbs students in our first year besides dental subjects. We're just doctors who specialise in teeth. Simple as that. We'll refer to ourselves as dental surgeons just as often as mbbs graduates refer to themselves as physicians. Its only fair. At the end of the day, both dentists and physicians are every bit as "doctor" as each other.

It's semantics. As a dentist, I never go around calling myself a doctor. I am a doctor, but for some reason there is a distinction to differentiate one's self as a dentist vs a medical doctor.

I had a guy get down on me for my education when we first met. Let me say, I do not make a big deal about my education (masters degree), nor do I think someone without a degree is lacking in any way and this guy asked! But any time I said something he didn't agree with or he said something I didn't have knowledge of he'd say, "Come on, college girl, you really don't know this?" Or, "I didn't think someone with a degree would feel this way." Made me feel 2 inches tall the way he was going on. It was obvious being college educated made him feel insecure, despite me showing an interest in his career, which was pretty successful, so not sure where the insecurity was coming from. But when I told him I wasn't interested in a second date, he accused me of being prejudiced against him because he didn't go to college. Pretty sure I dodged a bullet there. 🤦🏻♀️

In Australia dentists work almost completely in the private system so a young dentist is going to have more of an income than a young doctor

Most languages word for dentist translates directly as "tooth doctor". They're doctors. Being a specialist in a specific medical field doesn't suddenly mean you're not a doctor. And yes, oral health is medical. People can die from untreated tooth infections. How the hell is that not medical?

A dentist is not a "Doctor" in the usual sense. They don't practice General Medicine - as Doctors do, and the requirements for Medical School are more vigorous. In my country Doctors take five years for their two degrees, then two more years of supervision before unsupervised practice. Dentists can practice after four years. Butt-hurt dentists can call themselves whatever they like but I address my dentist as "Amat."😊 I shall henceforth address my car mechanic as "Doctor."
I have a doctorate and my husband has a high school diploma & has done really well for himself in management. I am constantly amazed at his people skills, event planning, ease at public speaking & ability to navigate workplace politics. Some of these are natural gifts and some due to his military training. Why must we devalue others based on an imaginary, socially invented heirachy?
I agree with some of your statements & I wouldn't devalue your husband's accomplishments. However, the real point is that on this date, this man chose to argue with someone he should be trying to impress. Yes, the man asks the woman out on a date, so he is trying to impress her. He showed himself to be combative. While you may have a doctorate in a field like education, your income may not exceed significantly what your husband makes. In my country dentists are called dentists, they are not recognized as doctors. The training here is different so I guess that’s why. They can be called doctors if they get a doctorate but not just from getting licenciatura. If there was a major issue in your mouth you actually do have to go to a proper doctor though, not a dentist. You go to an oral surgeon or an ENT or maybe a plastic surgeon... Not a dentist.

I think that it would have been more appropriate for her to have said that she’s a dentist upfront rather than I’m a doctor. The same goes for a medical doctor. Identify yourself as a physician. The title of doctor is not owned by any one discipline. There’s a lot of different kinds of doctors out there. The public needs to be reeducated on this. lol no, this is incorrect. In the US, dentists removal wisdom teeth. Usually, they're oral surgeons, who are drs who complete dental school and specialize in OMFS residency. During that residency, they can choose to also get their MD. It's either 4 years after dental school or 6 years after dental school if they're doing the DDS/MD tract.@@PippyPappyPatterson
Dentists may be doctors but don't typically refer to themselves as such. I feel like dentists typically tell you they are dentists not doctors and some other doctors do this also, maybe a cardiologist would be another example.
In Norway the word for dentist is 'tannlege', which literally translates to 'tooth doctor'. The same is true for many other languages as well, e.g. German and Japanese.

You're wrong. The protected title for medicinal doctors in the USA is MD, which stands for the latin Medicinae Doctor, or Doctor of Medicine in english. Anyone getting a PHD gets the title of doctor in their respective field. PHD stands for the latin "Philosophiae doctor", meaning doctor of phylosophy in english 😅 The fact that english speaking people decided to call physicians "doctors" is a bit weird in all other languages, since doctors comes from the latin word "doctor" which simply means teacher... For example, in french, a PHD is called a "doctorat", and physicians are called "médecin", which doesn't have any similarity as you can see since anyone can get a "doctorat" in any field, which logically makes more sense than calling physicians "doctors"
Dentists are real doctors. Dentists hold doctoral degrees and therefore are considered “doctors”. Now is a dentist a medical doctor? In most cases, no. But they can still prescribe medications, as you can see. As a pharmacist, I’d think you’d know that. Of course there are differences in this field but in some professions, like a dentist, you can be a doctor at the same time. For example: When you go to the dentist, do you say “Dr. __” or “Mr/Ms/Mrs.__”? Same question goes for a pharmacist. (I’m not trying to trash your profession by the way. I apologize if it sounds like it)

Yeah, actually dentists that do “residency” are those who try to apply for specialty after graduation, a set of stuck up tryhards (typically not all). OMG- my cousin just graduated dental school-she’s the first in the family to have a degree past masters so I am sooo proud of her but can NOT believe the amount of people that tell me their relatives are ALSO DENTISTS-when they are actually hygentists and TRULY argue this-HOW are aooooo many people sooooo dumb?!? Also, fun fact- my cousin is ONE MILLION dollars in student debt after all the school and it’s EXTREMELY difficult to get into dental school!!!! I have an amazing dentist who for me has been borderline a psychologist for me through hard visits. The scariest work to get done that requires the most patient and caring person to do their job. US trained dentist here. We are doctors, just not medical doctors and I would never pretend to be a physician or act like I do what physicians do. My patients call me doctor (lol or sweetie or dear, with older patients).
I also wouldn't introduce myself as a "doctor" first thing when someone asks if that's what most ppl are all upset about - I would simply say dentist.
We do learn about the whole human body though, at least in the US. The curriculum is pretty similar to medical school the 1st and 2nd year.
3rd and 4th year we specialize in oral health/oral medicine/dental specific classes.
Annnnyway, all that said, we do some intense surgeries in the mouth. Extractions where we are drilling & removing patient's jaw bones, placing dental implants, full mouth reconstructions, IV sedation, disinfecting and removing nerve tissue, doing oral biopsies and so on. That's just on the general side. Oral surgeons are DDS/MDs usually and do 4-6 years POST dental school training.
Sometimes our patients are really sick, I have to know about their systemic issues before procedures bc I can technically kill them . Ppl forget we do irreversible things to your mouth which can affect your whole body. And we definitely can get sued like any physician liability wise.
It's not all just fillings and cleanings. But alas, the public doesn't care. It's fine. I'm glad most ppl don't need these intensive dental treatments and only see the most basic things we do. Most ppl hate the dentist anyway :'D

A dentist is someone who simply gets an early specialisation. Believe it or not, we're still taught the entirety of anat, physio, biochem in our first years which is literally the same thing taught to mbbs students in our first year besides dental subjects.
We're just doctors who specialise in teeth. Simple as that. We'll refer to ourselves as dental surgeons just as often as mbbs graduates refer to themselves as physicians. Its only fair.

Let me say, I do not make a big deal about my education (masters degree), nor do I think someone without a degree is lacking in any way and this guy asked! A dentist is not a "Doctor" in the usual sense. They don't practice General Medicine - as Doctors do, and the requirements for Medical School are more vigorous. In my country Doctors take five years for their two degrees, then two more years of supervision before unsupervised practice. Dentists can practice after four years.
Butt-hurt dentists can call themselves whatever they like but I address my dentist as "Amat."😊

I have a doctorate and my husband has a high school diploma & has done really well for himself in management. I am constantly amazed at his people skills, event planning, ease at public speaking & ability to navigate workplace politics. Some of these are natural gifts and some due to his military training.

However, the real point is that on this date, this man chose to argue with someone he should be trying to impress. Yes, the man asks the woman out on a date, so he is trying to impress her. While you may have a doctorate in a field like education, your income may not exceed significantly what your husband makes. However, I believe this man felt intimidated that she had an earning potential that far outstripped what he could command.
Although dentists study Anatomy in a great detail, they have a unique job role that is different to a MD doctor, hence a distinct title of a Dentist.

But if you’re a dentist, just call yourself a dentist. Be clear and proud of who you are. Saying “doctor” is very misleading. A lawyer (who is a “doctor of the law”) and theologian (“doctor of theology”) is misleading to call themselves a doctor. Same with a dentist, who has a totally different degree in teeth & mouth health. That’s just a fact, sorry :/

In my country dentists are called dentists, they are not recognized as doctors. The training here is different so I guess that’s why. They can be called doctors if they get a doctorate but not just from getting licenciatura.

If there was a major issue in your mouth you actually do have to go to a proper doctor though, not a dentist. You go to an oral surgeon or an ENT or maybe a plastic surgeon... Not a dentist.

I think that it would have been more appropriate for her to have said that she’s a dentist upfront rather than I’m a doctor. The same goes for a medical doctor. Identify yourself as a physician. The title of doctor is not owned by any one discipline. There’s a lot of different kinds of doctors out there. The public needs to be reeducated on this. When you are in their office you can call them doctor.

This is so bizarre! I would never have thought that the very people who have helped me with all sorts of dental problems, including wisdom teeth removal and installing implants, might be look down on by anyone, especially non-doctors!

lol no, this is incorrect. In the US, dentists removal wisdom teeth. Usually, they're oral surgeons, who are drs who complete dental school and specialize in OMFS residency. During that residency, they can choose to also get their MD. It's either 4 years after dental school or 6 years after dental school if they're doing the DDS/MD tract.@@PippyPappyPatterson

Dentists may be doctors but don't typically refer to themselves as such. I feel like dentists typically tell you they are dentists not doctors and some other doctors do this also, maybe a cardiologist would be another example.

You're wrong. The protected title for medicinal doctors in the USA is MD, which stands for the latin Medicinae Doctor, or Doctor of Medicine in english.
Anyone getting a PHD gets the title of doctor in their respective field. PHD stands for the latin "Philosophiae doctor", meaning doctor of phylosophy in english 😅
The fact that english speaking people decided to call physicians "doctors" is a bit weird in all other languages, since doctors comes from the latin word "doctor" which simply means teacher...
For example, in french, a PHD is called a "doctorat", and physicians are called "médecin", which doesn't have any similarity as you can see since anyone can get a "doctorat" in any field, which logically makes more sense than calling physicians "doctors"

But they can still prescribe medications, as you can see. As a pharmacist, I’d think you’d know that. Of course there are differences in this field but in some professions, like a dentist, you can be a doctor at the same time. For example: When you go to the dentist, do you say “Dr. __” or “Mr/Ms/Mrs.__”? Same question goes for a pharmacist. (I’m not trying to trash your profession by the way. I apologize if it sounds like it)

OMG- my cousin just graduated dental school-she’s the first in the family to have a degree past masters so I am sooo proud of her but can NOT believe the amount of people that tell me their relatives are ALSO DENTISTS-when they are actually hygentists and TRULY argue this-HOW are aooooo many people sooooo dumb?!? Also, fun fact- my cousin is ONE MILLION dollars in student debt after all the school and it’s EXTREMELY difficult to get into dental school!!!!
