The Jette Parker Young Artists, the Royal Opera Chorus and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House have teamed up to breathe new life into Royal Opera House spaces that have been empty this past year. Featuring beloved pieces from Britten, Mozart, Wagner, Puccini, Gounod and Verdi, ROH Unmasked has been filmed in spaces that are not traditionally used for performances, ranging from behind the scenes to on the roof!
The music, settings and atmosphere of the performances mimic the experience of entering lockdown and emerging from it on the other side. This is juxtaposed with interviews with the Royal Opera House staff who usually work within the spaces. Featuring Filipe Manu, Alexandra Lowe, Blaise Malaba, Kiandra Howarth and Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha alongside members of the Royal Opera Chorus, this film captures the reawakening spirit of everyone at the Royal Opera House as we return to live performance.

As a member of Chepstow Castle Singing Club, I sang this in French during our wonderful trip to Normandy. We were conducted by the late Karl Daymond, an inspiration to all who knew him. Today 29th April would have been Karl's birthday.

My sense of longing while viewing this was triggered remembering the hours spent riding the London Eye (ferris wheel) seen in the background. Ah, those were the days.
Agreed. Longing is OK, but no regrets. Banish them forever. Love whatever we have, be grateful for what we can have - love innovation and effort, inspiration and accommodation of the kind we see in the film. The new world we must build will be different, should be different.

Absolutely wonderful! First time I learned the lyrics. The librettists are the forgotten people of opera. Which is more difficult- write words to suit the music or vice - versa?

Our aim is to bring print alive for those who are unable to enjoy it for themselves. I am currently working on an Episode of a program called Literary Ear. The subject of this episode is Italian Composers. I have found a book titled The Faithful by Collin Mitchell, featuring Verdi. During the COVID lock downs I found a video of the Royal London Opera rehearsing The March of the Hebrew Slaves on the roof of the Royal Opera House, which I absolutely love. I am hoping to include this as an audio clip in the Literary Ear episode. I am wondering if there is a story to be told about this wonderful rehearsal. How it came about? The people?
