    Those words used to describe Natives is why I get so skeptical about using history books. I purchased a Christian book from Abeka, and they describe people who lived in tropical climates as lazy; instead of taking the time to look into their ways of living, or describing why they choose not to do many things in the heat of the sun. Growth from these sources is definitely needed.

      It can definitely be frustrating and makes it hard to find great curricula out there. Taking the opportunity to teach the reasons why in your example and many others is so helpful for us. I hope you are able to find something that works for your family. ❤️

    Amen about growth! You articulated that point regarding curriculum so well. Thank you❤

    It’s so funny, I can’t remember any of my high school history teachers 😂. Last year we did American History and my daughter learned so much from the American girl books. We also watched Dr. Quinn the Medicine Women and as an adult I have a newfound respect for Indigenous people. As well as the pioneers,okay. Also, a great book to get is You choose series…it actually puts you in those types of situations to see if you will survive. We have never survived our first time through any of those books 😂!

      Haha I don’t remember my teachers either. Wow, thank you for the recommendations. My girls love the what would you do type books and shows where they get to choose. They will love those! Dr. Quinn totally forgot about that show. We have the Addy series of the American Girl books. Probably time for a reread. ❤️

    Amen to learning as we are teaching! That’s actually one of my favorite things about homeschooling! Thanks for the video, I’m looking for an American history curriculum to do after we finish world history, and this has been one of my top contenders. Mainly because we thoroughly enjoy the author’s podcast.

      That is awesome!! We are enjoying using the audio for American’s Story 2. Angela Odell is doing the reading for it.

    Thanks so much for your review. I love hearing your thoughts around how to teach a well rounded history, or at least a better rounded history than we had.
    Thanks for all the work you put into your channel!

    Thanks for the review. I really enjoyed your perspective on just adding additional things to the history curriculum. It’s a first generation American. I intend on adding a lot to history when teaching my son to learn about the cultures where my families come from but also the countries that I’ve lived in.

    We got the audio book and the timeline as extras. We have additional readers and spines to dig deeper. Thank you for the review and flip through very detailed. Loved the opportunities for growth you mentioned.

    Great review! There were parts of this that I supplemented with living books; ex native Americans. I love the take that you took on the discussions because I think there is always ways to improve, and we enrich in our children by having those important discussions.

    History is the one subject that I seriously have zero recollection of learning in school. Current events yes but history....nada! I'm excited for this review!

    Excellent review, all the way through! Loved it! Great crash ending.
    I get so uncomfortable when books want me to say Indian instead of Native American. It was a mistake word from the beginning, so why do we still use that term.
    I have my minor in history and I still feel like I'm learning all the time, alongside of my kids. It really does go to show that we need to teach our kids to love learning and when they care then they will retain the information.

      Thanks Abby! Yes I agree teaching them love learning is so vital.

      I personally know several, and only one does not like the word Indian. Most prefer their individual tribal name but because strangers don't know which one they belong to, they are ok with being called Indian as well as Native American.
      It's a sticky thing because you can't possibly know how a stranger will feel about being called one thing or another. Humans are funny like that.

    I got the textbook at a used homeschool sale. I plan to do it as a read aloud, and not buy the teachers guide. I don't care for the worksheets in the guide, and we do plan on pulling in a variety of resources similar to you.

    • @LifeofTillmans
      @LifeofTillmans  Před rokem +1

      We didn’t do any of the worksheets. We read through a few of them. But that’s all. Supplementing this curriculum with other projects and books was so worth it for a whole picture curriculum.

    I'm really torn between this and the Notgrass Star Spangled Story. Did your girls enjoy the worksheets and projects? We actually have the story of the world books but there's no real pictures and that is a benefit for sure to this masterbooks option.
    Have yall listened to Angela Odells podcast? It is so awesome, she presents the stories so well and ties the hard truths into Biblical thoughts.

    • @LifeofTillmans
      @LifeofTillmans  Před rokem

      We did many do any of the worksheets. None lol we did read over a few of them but that was it. Too much writing for what we were looking for. But some of the questions were good. Loved the pictures! Gave it so much life!
      I didn’t even know she had a podcast. I’ll go find that! Thanks for sharing!
