that isn't really the thing you should be thinking right now
instead you should be asking:
if the beast made a deal with the woodsman (that person we see in the first episode until the last) and the same deal was offered to wirt (to put greg's soul in the lantern) then why would wirt turn into the beast in the first place if the woodsman didn't?
also this is a fanfiction that talks about what would happen if wirt accepted the deal and it isn't canon so well that makes the question you asked... kinda dumb (no offense)

spaghetti the thing started to happened to ep 8 i believe when the trees grew around wirt but then in the show the true ending was that wirt was going to take greg place but then cartoon network wanted a good ending instead! So ya :3

spaghetti I think the idea for the fanfic is that Wirt was turning into an edelwood already and he was giving up so he probably had it grow that way because he had the edelwood and then he became the lantern bearer.

how are you I think there are different types of this fanfic. The type I follow is Greg became an edelwood but isn’t alive as Wirt is still keeping the beast alive, not Greg.
