Fitting an Auxiliary DIN Socket to the BMW K1600

During my recent trip up to Nordkapp and back I realised the Airman compressor I carried was too powerful to be run from the Canbus controlled DIN sockets on the bike, popping the software fuses instantly (these are reset by switching the ignition off and back on). To overcome this, and drilling a hole only in the Wunderlich Accessory Sidepanels, I was able to fit an auxiliary DIN socket direct to the battery. This overcame the issue and has the added benefit of giving a charge point (with suitable adapter(s)), even when the ignition is switched off. For example GoPro batteries or helmet intercom while stopped for coffee or lunch. Obviously the bike battery is not finite so be sure not to flatten it but charging the batteries for an hour should be OK with a good bike battery.

I've only used my airman once, like you on someone else's bikewhen the CO2 canisters he had failed to put a decent amount of air in his rear tyre on his Triumph Speed Triple😅 I used the fused SAE flying lead I have for my optimate 4 that also supplies my Keis heated jacket so there's no drilling required, just a couple of cable ties required and again there's no chance CANBUS will cut the supply which is something you don't want to discover if your miles from anywhere. It's an idea when using the airman to have your engine running too so your own battery doesn't go flat. Looking forward to watching your vid on your trip 👍
Hi Adrian. I agree with running engine while using high draw. I put it in the description. I allowed myself the drilling as it is an accessory 🤣. I have suggested that Wunderlich May in any case sell that panel drilled with a small ‘daisy-chain plug-and-play’ lead to bring the BMW one forward as that’s a real easy task. Would need a grommet to stop the battery compartment getting wet but seems a good addition 👍🏻

Great idea; but, I attached an SAE connector straight onto the battery and then tucked it behind a panel 👍
Yep of course that works. I also though have an optimate DIN to double USB that allows charging of GoPro batteries or mates phones during coffee stops so very multipurpose 👍🏻
I use an Optimate to 12v Socket adapter.
Like the convenience of this though and pretty tidy I thought? Loved the DIN replacement on my GS which then used the DIN with bracket direct to battery. Trouble is you can end up being a group ‘powerbank’ 🤣👍🏻
I looked at that pump emailed Nippy Normans to ask if it worked with the BMW DIN socket but they never answered. I was able to find that it didn’t work with the socket but knew that was most likely anyway so bought a battery pump instead. It is much smaller, battery lasts many weeks and can do the tyres several times is charged through a USB.
The thing I love about the airman is two things. The screw on tyre adapter as particularly on the GSA they’re small and close to the rim (in fact I have an adapter for standard garage connectors) and the fact the gauge is very accurate. I carry a PCL pencil gauge too but good I can have confidence that 42psi is 42psi and not 36. Particularly with the weight of the K16 👍🏻
Which battery powered pump did you buy please?
Thank heavens I don’t have can bus on my bmw, never experienced problem with airman either using bmw din socket or direct adapter to battery. Must let your public know about new bike, particularly tyre wear and servicing costs, although you may have a contract? I find the new RT & K16 a “little” cramped for 1.89m height.
I’m hoping to get around to that on the big trip video as she’s now done 10,000 miles (16,000km) so I have a fair idea about her now 🤣. Surprisingly good on tyres. Had fresh rubber before trip and just about to leave for 2,000 mile trip around Pyrenees and the rear would definitely last but the front not so sure so reckon a front good for 8,000 miles and a rear maybe 10,000 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK Interesting, tyre wear much better than I expected with such a heavy bike. Trip of 5000+ miles tested the tyres. Forth coming Scandinavian videos will be greatly anticipated for the winter nights.
Love it. However, I feel like it is an overly complicated to solution for having emergency air or air for any reason. I have a LiPo air compressor from Amazon. It is very small, very light. Probably halve the size of your pump. It can also serve as USB charger. It works beautifully, especially for motorcycle tires. Best of all worlds. Plus? Only cost me $60 or so for one of the better quality Amazon units. You can get em much cheaper.
But does it overload the incredibly low amperage DIN sockets and still inflate from flat in reasonable time? This was the dilemma faced and this a perfect solution for me. Also the gauge on the airman has proven pretty accurate which I like too. Each to their own though (or you’d all be married to my wife 🤣) 👍🏻
hi dont use the scotsh lock .they give fals power after a few months .cause of vibrations they dont contact the pins .
there are better solutions .
I agree but used what i had. Would truly think it could have been built in the wiring too as many people may not cut the wire to ensure the fuse is actually in line. Tried to emphasise that for that reason 👍🏻
PosiTap connectors are good and waterproof. Should be in everyone’s tool kit🕊
Randomly. I have positap but not really a fan of them either. Given time and a shed search I’d use crimped connectors with solder and shrink sleeve. Definitely they could do better with the scotchlok 👍🏻
I carry my Dewalt portable 20v Lithium air compressor. Problem solved
Indeed, so long as the lithium battery is charged. I also have no need to carry a gauge as the airman compressor has an accurate integral gauge in tyre pressure range calibrated with a garage unit. Each to their own I guess??
ck the Dewalt has an accurate gauge and automatically stops when entered pressure is attained. No offense intended just my 02 cents. Peace
