Their four faces during the movie: 😱😱😱😱
And then at the end: "That was not scary"
At the end becomes just Disturbing and somehow silly if you aren't so into it, but the movie is so damn good!
that's called overreacting
Its because people do not know what scary is anymore. They expect movies with the jump scares and bullshit.
Not scary, didn't scream
As a person who saw the movie in theaters it wasn’t scary in the least bit
"That was not scary"
You ladies looked pretty scared during the reaction.
Well lit room with couple of friends joking.
indeed! Then how do they react when they are scared??
its just cause they weren't shocked by a cheap generic jumpscare every 5 minutes thats why ;)

You know you're on film hiding behind your hand right? lmao
They're right. It's not scary, it's upsetting. I't not a traditional horror movie in any way.
@@eryiusnefarious The genre is called horror, for being horrifying. It's not called scary. And I think there are a few really scary moments anyway. The Shining doesn't have many scary moments either but it's definitely horror.
eryiusnefarious Well thank god not everything falls under the “traditional horror movie” category otherwise films would be completely fucked. This movie is terrifying in ways that yes, traditional horror does NOT scare you. This movie has guts and nuance, something most “traditional” horror movies completely lack.
@Messy I don't think you understand that your subjective experience of either of those films isn't an objective reality. I found parts scary of both those films. And the point was to say that they clearly found parts scary as they were hiding behind their hands etc. Were they not?
@Messy so the shining was not scary too right?
Watching a horror movie in a well lit room, with 3 friends, eating snacks while covering your eyes to not see the horror scenes.
Final verdict: "Not scary."
Excuse me as I remove my head in a similar fashion to the mom in the movie.
I watched this one on a sunny morning in bed and it still made me cry like a baby
Zachary Antle Me too. Will never forget how this made me feel.
Hahahahaha Ricardo almeida
@@missioncodez I'd love it if RED cameras were more affordable, but even the cheapest is like $6k. Which is a shame because one of those could give a clear image in low light and thus help set the mood for a horror react.
Is this MMA fighter "Ricardo Almeida"?
"i don't think there is one single person on earth who has seen this movie and wants to see it again" *raises hand* i've watched hereditary about 4-5 times so far
4 times but it took me a while. I didn't want to watch the head again and the screaming of Toni
You have to watch it at least twice to fully appreciate it.
lol same. I've watched it five times and I'll probably watch it again before the year ends. it's the kind of movie that is so well made that you find a new thing to appreciate every time you watch it.
3 or 4 times for me... I'm a tough girl, horror movies don't usually get to me... this is amazing film though.
I've seen it multiple times too and own it. My favorite movie of 2018. Great stuff.
"This is not scary."
Yeah a little girl getting beheaded and you hearing and watching her mom's blood curdling screams of anguish, no big deal. Basically an episode of Friends. Brilliant.
X It’s supposed to be disturbing in general. They didn’t get that horror can come in more forms then just cheap jump scares. Pissed me off to hear them bash this film because they didn’t get it.
@@astrea4020 this movie was really disturbing, and I really ended up enjoying it, but this 15 min recap is probably the extent to which I'd ever rewatch. same goes for Midsommar.
Akash Samson couldn’t agree more. I don’t think people fundamentally understand is that when horror leaves you questioning things and not aware of every detail after a first watch then that’s a good thing. If a horror movie leaves you thinking “what the fuck” then that means it left an impact on you and you were genuinely unsettled. How did they not get that?

Toni Collette deserved an Oscar for her performance in this movie. It's a shame the Academy doesn't give more recognition to genre movies

But is not a horro really horror, coz Ari said it was family drama with a horror elements added. This scariest than horror
@@felixdom9693 Ari said it was a family drama, he never said it wasn't horror. The same way Midsommar is a break up movie. It is a break up movie, but that doesn't mean it wasn't horror. Hacksaw Ridge is a redemption story, but it doesn't change that was also a war movie.
"I wouldn't call that horror"
This is 1000% horror. It's just less typical and it's handled with more care and artistic flair than your run-of-the-mill horror. You can recognize horror even if it's below expectations. I personally love several horror movies that I didn't find particularly scary. This is the kind that is made for a rewatch, while a lot of horror movies are one-and-dones.
Hereditary is definitely a better horror movie than MOST of modern horror movies which rely on cheap-ass jumpscares. Hereditary uses tension and drama to unsettle the audience, and that shit stays with you more than a jumpscare ever will
It's more disturbing than scary.
@@Atem_in_the_streets Is a lot of things, jumping from scary to disturbing to silly to again disturbing.
I agree, people confuse "horror" with making you jump. I can't remember a single fucking thing from Insidious, or The Conjuring, but this one stays with me.
@@lockeforeer EXACTLY!
I haven't seen a lot of jumpscare based horror movies, but I've watched a bunch of jumpscare based horror games. They don't stick with me. What does stick from those games are the eerie, atmospheric and psychologically scary moments.
Midsommar, Hereditary and The Shining stay with me because they genuinely shook me.
I had to take 2 hours to calm down after watching Midsommar because it fucked me up that much.
@@SidPhoenix2211 see, that kinda stuff doesn't do it for me though. Again, Midsommar is same as Hereditary. Not scary, just disturbing imagery. It's shock value, like Cannibal Holocaust or Hostel.
*is into the movie and terrified for 2 hours straight* “that was so dumb and it wasn’t scary”
It annoys me when people have a visceral, uncomfortable reaction to something, and then say "it's not good." ...
The purpose of art is not to always make you feel good and happy and satisfied. Art is supposed to make you feel. It's a medium to help you explore the range of human emotion, because that's an important part of what it means to be human. Just because something makes you feel uncomfortable doesn't automatically make it "bad."
even when they get upset about the things the family say when they are possessed. Like yeah a fucking demon has possessed them if it's not already obvious something sinister is going on.
They clearly expected it to be a basic hollywood jumpscare movie.... It kinda sucks that they just shit on it because it wasn't what they expected it to be.
mostly i love movies that defy my expectations
They were watching the movie with bright ass room lol who tf does that
This is the only horror film in the past several years that absolutely shook me to my core. Mainly jump scare movies don't scare me at all. That slow creeping dread is what really gets me and this movie pulled it off perfectly.
Exactly. I am a terrible horror/scary viewer as i’m easily scared and unsettled. But i love paranormal and drama. So this movie (unfortunately - and I say this because I didnt hide away like I normally would and then it was too late lol) sucked me in with the family drama (which was acted beautifully) and suddenly there is tense creepy music and everything just keeps building, and getting worse. I was disgusted and horrified to literally crying for their grief and shock, then horrified all over again. By the end i was exhausted from the tension and emotional rollercoaster - and its very rare for a film to do that, I think, regardless of genre
This didn’t affect me at all.
@@fyoutube2294 Happy for you
you can't watch a horror movie with all the lights on wtf....
This movie doesn't rely on cheap jump scares or excessive gore to unsettle you. It does however leave a deep feeling of existential dread once you fully grasp how everything played out. That's much more terrifying than than your standard "horror" movie imo.
A terrible way to watch a horror movie. Bright lights, constant chatting and low volume. No movie is scary in these conditions.

You guys missed so much small details that this reaction is laughable. Hereditary is the type of Movie that's so well made you can't take your eyes off the screen for one second. And saying it wasn't scary while 3/4th's of the movie your covering your face and talking over each other is why you didn't understand it. This is the type of Movie you have to watch more than once to understand it fully. And saying this movie was stupid is the reason we get movies like The Nun in theaters. Smh

@@jasmine9581 What didn't you get about it? :)
This is kind of disappointing. The real horror in this film is that the family was doomed from the beginning and couldn't do anything about it. That's why the scene of Peter (the son) in class discussing Heracles is important. The story of Heracles centers around fate, and how inescapable it is. When the classmate says that the characters had 'no hope', it was a tongue-in-cheek reference to the film's theme. The family had no hope, or say, in anything that was happening to them because the grandma had put everything into motion already. That's the scary part! The feeling of dread and hopelessness and knowing nothing you can do will help your cause.
"I saw the window jump coming"
Way to be immersed, chick.
this movie is too complicated for them, specially for the second girl from the left, we could've done without her.
Even the girl with the orange sweater
This is one of the most disturbing horror movies I have ever seen. Scared the living hell of me. Favorite movie of 2018!
Jump scares do not equal good scary movie. This was great story telling and a great director who keeps the audience unsure and uncomfortable.
I think their definition of horror is jumpscares.
I can't think of any horror film that exists that scares me anymore. I've faced real life terror countless times and no amount of fiction will ever match that
@@SamuelBlack84of course the scariest things are things that happen in the real world. The point if movies are to portray them in an artistic medium. The horror of losing a child, of a broken family stricken with grief and resentment, and then the black magic witchcraft going on as well. There are real twisted people out there who worship dark entities whether you think they are real or not.
@@TR13400 Satanism is the worship of dark entities, but that isn't twisted. Satanism is actually one of the most moral belief systems there is
@@SamuelBlack84 I didn't say anything about Satanism. And also there is different kinds of Satanism and devil worship throughout the world.
One of the most moral beliefs? What's so moral about it???
Satanic is bad, demons are bad.
Yes there's different satanic and demonic/devil worships but they all resort to the same thing which is appealing to evil spirits/demons and so on. Even more so there's no good that'll come from it.
Not saying that all demons are bad, however they've remain to be extremely dangerous and bad in their own ways, then also depending on folklore and actual law binding spells or laws that forces a spiritual being from doing anything.
Theres always one "that wasnt scary at all" said the lady who held the blanket and hand over her eyes at some scenes
charlie was Paimon the entire time, since her birth. also the mother wasn't a bad women she was just a grieving women who had a lot of negative shit happen to her in her entire life
Lol in like a single month
Yeah, that really shook me. But does Paimon control everything she does, all of her actions? Because there are moments when Charlie is clearly just behaving like a normal, awkward, kid.
Toni Collette deserved an Oscar for that performance she did in this movie.
AGREED.
Too bad the dumbass Oscars look down on the horror genre -_-
Literally one of the best horror movies to ever be released and their only argument is “not SCARY 😡”. Sorry it actually requires you to think past cheap jump scares. 😒
i’ve never seen people so invested in a films characters, the plot, gasping at scenes, hiding under their blankets, screaming, not looking at the screen only to come out of it saying it was “so bad” and “not scary at all”. It was SUPPOSED to make you uncomfortable bruh and that’s why it’s a good movie, it gets you emotionally invested in the characters and the plot and makes you actually feel something other than boredom
"That is not scary" through 90% of the movie they are covering there faces 😂
I find this movie extremely hard and uncomfortable to watch
Yup, that's horror alright.
For me, it is Hereditary in the sense that the emotional and psychological trauma you get from your parents/family reflects in what you do (based on your choices) on your family next thus dooming the family's situation in the end.
and that's the scary/horror element of this story. The fact that these women didn't' get it is kind of a bummer. This is real stuff, joint family trauma that is.
The thought that you may be doomed to commit the same actions as your parents, and that the actions that your family takes have repercussions that will affect you and are out of your control. That's basically what 2/3 of the movie is about, and it went over their heads!
The name was more of a reference to how their grandmother passed away and the horror and everything terrible had influenced the rest of the family badly
the girls are all afraid of the movie and when it ends it comes with this conversation "it wasn't so scary", ok auahauhahauhah

@@ISilencerI the only person who seemed to appreciate this movie was the girl with the grey sweater
I love you guys and gals but this reaction brings me right back to what Jay from RedLetterMedia had to say about this movie. General audiences are probably going to hate it because they're so accustomed to the popcorn horror films of today like the Conjuring and Insidious series. This film was actually gripping and interesting unlike a lot of the horror films today but because it didn't have the jump scares and relatively simple plot that most have now a days it got labeled bad. It's the reason movie studios don't take chances anymore.
"That was not scary" - The girl hiding the screen with her hand.
Omg how can you not think this movie is anything short of a masterpiece
This was a seriously disappointing reaction
it was entertaining until they contradicted themselves by saying that it wasn't scary

YESSSSS! I love Hereditary. I have rewatched it like 3 times. The first time I watched it, I was by myself in a dark room with headphones on at 0230 AM. I hope you also check out Midsommar
I actually think Hereditary was the scariest movie I’ve seen since The Ring. Since then, it’d all just been jump scares and the supernatural rationalised away in a puff of logic. Hereditary stayed with me for a long time and I think that it is a true horror movie, crazy as it is at the end... that image of his mother floating over the bed is always gonna be with me

No8Named8Shadow well said. The grief and pain of a family under siege is so disturbing, so pitiful. It’s so... desperately hopeless.

Movies like this are overlooked as many people only want jumpscares and trash movies like anabelle, the movie was brilliant "it was not scary at all" also covering their eyes and looking away most of the time smh.
Second girl, Maddy, had her hand up a lot covering her view for someone that claims it wasn't scary. I hate when people lie about shit like this. Maybe they mean there weren't jump scares? Perhaps it would be a good idea to think twice before saying "that was not scary" after you've screamed throughout the entire movie :)
This is one of those movies more than worthy of a rewatch to put all the pieces together. Everything is right there from the beginning. This one's in my top 5 horror movies.
loved this, i had the uncut vid synced up with my dvd and it kept creeping out of sync every 2mins or so it was weird
secondly at the end with the "IT WASNT SCARY" BS you were shitting yourself throughout ahahah, hereditary is one of my favourite contemporary horror films, kubrickian film theory, no outright jumpscares, obscure mythos, no half measures or cop outs, loads of background plot pieces you pick up on multiple viewings, it's one of the few films you will think about indefinitely, when you're alone you'll get a fragment of it come back to you when you're at home and there's a dark corner that you can swear a form is silhouetted in it. same sort of feeling i had seeing the shining eons ago

The best modern day horror .. nothing can top this movie. If we going all time, sure The Shining, Texas Chainsaw, Psycho, even Silence Of The Lambs and Alien.. but of today’s horror? This movie takes the walnut cake
Lol....nah
Saitama so what modern day horror do you think is better than Hereditary? I’m all for a conversation but you gotta give me more lmfao
Depends on preference really. Best horrors I've watched in the past 10-12 years are Lake Mungo and The Wailing. Train to Busan too. Hereditary was good but it had it's issues, especially with pacing in the second and third act
Hereditary is great but there are other great new horrors (far scarier too) that people don't know about. Goodnight Mommy or The Ritual are much scarier for me and great too. And for me the best modern horror (last five years or so) is Suspiria.
I thought Hereditary was stupid the first time I watched it because I didn't understand it and was too wrapped up in feeling sad and angry about the characters. Only the second time was I actually scared by it and now it's one of my favorite films.
I just watched it for the first time and just felt sad, so maybe the second time it'll work for me.
Anyone saying out loud that wasn't scary. Clearly a sign of fear. In my opinion.
I love the easter eggs and the connection. The grandma already had the paimon logo and that guy who smiled at charlie was part of the clan. The clan prepared the death of charlie (the chocolate cake), the mental health group and more! All that was planned by the Clan!
I’ve never seen a better example of “this movie was not made for these people” than this reaction. Scary = jump scares to these people. Less than 5 jump scares = this movie isn’t scary”. A scary movie makes you uncomfortable and uneasy and not able to sleep well, not yell/laugh in a theater. 90% on RT but these kids don’t approve..I weep for the goddamn future.. lol
This is my favourite horror film.
People don't talk enough about this amazing soundtrack. Reborn is the best song. If you listen, you can catch a demon roar in it. Its basically a demonic celebration.
Toni Collette is an insanely good actress, her portrayal of the grief is so believable and nuanced. Also, this movie has great rewatchability. You see a lot of things you didn't piece together before, like about how Toni's brother killed himself and said his mother was trying to put people inside of him, or how she tried to kill Peter in his sleep because she was trying to save her children.
"Aunt. Fucking. Lydia." That was, verbatim, what I said to my sister when we watched this for the first time.

"Yeah so first of all that was not scary..."
*Hides under a blanket the whole time, cuddles with others BECAUSE it was actually scary, screams throughout the whole movie and covers her eyes with her hand*
Crazy mom wouldn't let witchy grandma near Peter, so grandma tried to improvise with Charly. However, Paimon likes to pee standing-up, so additional measures needed to be taken.
I just saw it a few days back! looking forward to your reaction
"That was very unsettling." "It's not horror". Um......maybe you girls should stick to the Annabelle movies if you want generic horror.
them saying "it's not scary" comparing to me watching it alone, in the middle of the night, lights off, and with my headphone . I guess it depends on the experience of each other.
