very nice looking gunny! the belt sander finish from bark river looks toothy. water stone finish is much finer. I think the difference in micro beveling with bark river knives is because of different craftsman finishing the knives. I would love to see your knife collection 2016! I'm wondering which knives you still have. I also loved the KSF sheath from sharpshooter best. every company is cutting expense where they can these days. luckily we can still enjoy good quality knives. You are lucky with 10% customs, we have to pay 21% + some other small fee. happy bushcraft!
You buy one and you are satisfied for the day. Then you are back looking at the catalogue in the morning for the next purchase. I know the feeling. Great videos!
Hello, I've been watching a lot of your videos and have learned lots on sharpening and the geometry of knives. Thanks for sharing and keep them coming.
I created by accident a flatter-on-one-side and rounder-on-the-other-side convex bevel on a knife I made for my father. It feather sticks wonderfully. Your video made me check the knife more closely and sure enough it had the geometry you describe. Great idea for a bushcrafting knife.
I want to thank you for the Yakiniku idea I got from your family videos. We have tried it and LOVE IT! Keep up the great work and keep the videos coming.
Thank you for showing the differences between the sheaths on both knives. I am wanting to get started in leather working making sheaths and holsters and this is a great comparison.
+virtuovice Glad to hear it Mr V.I still can't get a decent edge on my m390 flat rhombic grind puukko,my stones are king 800.1200 and 6000 do you think I need a coarser grit??
+Randal Flagg I think you will need Shapton Ha-no-kuromaku (Pro) 1000 grit which is even coarser and faster than your King 800. I believe it will fit your needs and you will never regret paying money for it. Thanks.
Would love to see your current bushcraft knife collection. Last time you showed it was in sept 2013, and I am sure you have some new additions, have done some modifications and/or changed your preferences some :-)
I'm really digging the new C-Tek, I have the Bush Seax with blue C-Tek handle scales and a red C-Tek with carbon fiber bolster and hollow pins Gunny hunter in 3V as well. New knives from Bark river are really nice this year that have been coming out.
I just bought a Bravo 1 in A2 rampless, but with a full height grind. The full height grind is very nice. Thins out the edge angle nicely, but still very strong. I believe the Fox River is a full height grind with an even thinner blade stock, maybe .170 inches.
Very Beautiful Knifes, You are a very lucky man to be able to afford so many. I realise the price you pay is quite high and most likely worth the cost, if you would please mention the price paid when showing and doing reviews, i for one would appreciate very much, i will look up on line for cost. Since watching your channel you have taught me a lot. I have a large amount of different brands, some expensive and of course some not so much. I am curious if you keep most or just sell off the ones you don't care for. If you change the grind or bevel on some do they then accomplish better results that you would be looking for, or just buy a new one with different spec's. Thanks for your videos , the more i watch, the more i look for more. I believe i added to many questions for you to answer all at once so one or two would be just fine. Have a great day, see you soon!! Thumbs Up
+Gene Sauerbry I make two different grinds typically to the same model. One is traditional symmetrical zero convex grind for game dressing and batoning. The other is asymmetrical grind the left side bevel of which is very shallow convex to glide through a shallow layer of wood to make thin feathers. I enjoy the both grinds for each purpose. I have many chances to sell or give my Bark River knives to my friends. So the remaining knives on me is not so many but all good ones. Thanks.
My favorite part of convex knives. Is getting to sharpen them. I’m going to do my s1pro today. I’m going to do a 20 to 17 to 15 and then I blend them in.
I got a fox river two, and the blade geometry especially up by the tip are very thin, grind goes all the way to the spine, no micro bevel, excellent blade, another for river 2 that i have and the grind doesn't go to the spine, and towards the tip the grind has alot more material behind it and just doesn't slice as well, too thick compared to my other..handle is also more squared off than the good one I speak of, Suttle differences make a huge difference in the feel
Greetings from NH,Nice looking Gunny doc. I am also looking forward to hiking and camping season. My BR Aurora has served me well for many years so I'm interested in how you like that Gunny.
to go along with my last message was looking to have a Kydex and have a piggyback knife like the Aurora and the Aurora Mini. which handle material has the best grip wet and dry?
Thanks for all the videos on sharpening, I wanted to know if I could use a stone to sharpen a recurve blade, there really isn't any good videos on CZcams about using a whetstone to sharpen recurves
If I knew my government opened up and checked my plain package... with no reason... I'd be pretty upset. It's none of their business. But it's a really nice knife anyways.
Hello, I like the handle also its always good to see your videos . but this response is not to your youtube sight I heard on the news of earth quakes in japan i hope and pray you and your family are okay as well as all the effected people
Dr. Wako how do you find the (current) build quality of BRK knives? Also has it changed over the years? I've bought 4 over the last year and I'm not impressed. None of them was sharp out of the box, they all had "uneven grinds" and the handle fit is not perfect on any of them (the micarta on my Bravo 1LT is close though). I also had bad edge rolling on one of the knives the first time I used it (light use). I've therefore decided to stay away from BRKs in the future, and rather spend my money elsewhere. This makes me a bit sad, because they have many really nice designs (my favorite is the Ultralight Bushcrafter) and nice steel and scales options. I just wish that the build quality and quality control matched the price.
+grunde73 Currently almost all of Bark River knives come in a dull edge. There are only a few exceptional zero convex sharp edges. So I routinely sharpen their edges just out of the box. I miss the days when all Barkies were sharp out of the box. The handle contours are different piece by piece even in the same model. So we need to hope good luck to meet a nicely contoured handle. I think they produce far too many knives in far too high pace for their capacity to keep their most important quality control. I already have enough experience with Bark River knives and what I do from now is not buying them but keeping my already bought knives in a good condition throughout my life.
+virtuovice Thanks! You confirm my impression. Also thanks for many inspiring knife videos. I've especially found your sharpening videos useful. I also enjoy your fishing videos allot (as I'm also a keen fly-fisherman living in Norway).
I just picked up a ambush brute for bush rafting and decided I didn't like the grind for that purpose and went back to the BRK mini bushcrafter light I'm thinking the brute will now be camp knife instead have you had any experience with the ambush brute if so what is your opinion on it
+evol Fox River has a thin handle suitable for side holding for game dressing, and a progressive blade angle also suitable for game dressing. In short Fox River is a specific hunting knife in my opinion. Gunny has a universal design for any tasks in my opinion. Thanks.
hi, you mentioned in one of your video that you use CPM 3V as primary knife and Elmax as backup. Have you ever tried the Gunny Hunter CruWear? What are your thoughts about this steel and how would you forsee using it? primary vs backup? cheers
could you do a video on recurve convex waterstone sharpening? do you have any? I am wondering because it is difficult to get the inside curve on my bravo strike force and thought you might have some tricks to it.
I don't think the recurve portion can be sharpened by a flat stone. It has to be sharpened by a rod sharpener or a pivot sharpening system. So I don't have any recurve knives. Thanks.
Hi! can you recomend me any white compound brand for stropping? Where I live is really hard to get bark rivers' white compound. But any other brand I can order it for amazon. I looking for a white kind compound, I mean with that same grit. Thanks!
+aHigher Power The quakes hit a very narrow area. So the casualties and damages were much smaller than expected for their magnitude. We live on a quake land anyway. Thanks.
I also bought the new AK forest sheath from DLT, it's ok not amazing, i never got a chance to own the original forest sheath made by great lake leatherwork. I also bought a horizontal carry sheath from dlt which is made by great lake leather work and the quality is much better, thicker leather. I like it but it's not for everyone as not everyone likes to carry their knives horizontally. Dr. Wako, I was wondering, do you not use the Aurora at all for bushcraft? I've been agonizing between getting the Aurora and Gunny in 3V and I still cannot decide.
+Victor Nekrasov Aurora has a sharper tip and feels a little dangerous to me. And I need more belly for my knives and sold my Aurora a few years ago. Aurora comes with the old bushcraft sheath and the tip was about to penetrate the bottom of the sheath. Anyway I prefer Gunny 3V the geometry of which is as nice as its A2 version. Thanks.
I am looking to purchase a couple of Bark River knives for bushcrafting. was thinking about the Aurora for bushcrafting and the Aurora mini for fine carving both with black canvas handles with liners. the Aurora seems like it would be better for hole drilling as the point is in line with the handle. 3 V of course. what is your opinion?
I confirmed current 3V Bravo1 and Gunny don't have fatter geometry than A2 ones. So I assume 3V Aurora will come in a nice geometry as A2 one does. The LT versions generally make the handles uncomfortably thin and are not recommended. The pointy tip of the Aurora must be for drilling. Take care!
Shouldn't the stronger steel allow the manufacturer to use thinner stock? I don't get it. "3V is 300% stronger than A2".....So why are the knives still the same thickness? This really impedes cutting and slicing chores. I wish Bark River would offer thinner knives so I can at least cut an apple or a carrot with out it looking like I used a shovel.
The LT line are thinner. The thickness (for example of a Bravo 1) helps with its main attraction . . . batoning. The B1 LT is thinner, therefore more of a muscle slicer or feather sticker. No?
Are you at all interested in swords as well? (I know you can't easily buy them in JP, but one can collect them, right?) Just asking because I find that often knife enthusiasts have quite the appreciation of swords as well...
Have you tried the bark river bushcrafter 2? I just ordered one in blue and gold maple burl. Do you think it is too long for general bushcrafting? Thanks in advance
I think it has right length for batoning. I don't think its low convex geometry is suitable for feathersticking though it will make a powerful batoning tool. Thanks.
+virtuovice BTW, it would be awsome to see you do a review of the Bushcrafter 2, as it is the most requested bark river knife of 2016 (according to them). You have few original bushcrafters, so it would be great to see a comparison. With your modified edge geometry of course.
+Thetinebroken CDPH feels a little short for a stag. It is useful to cut out the chest organs from the abdominal incision in case I need to move the deer out of the pasture yard in autumn. And I like it for does. Thanks.
+Monica Jones I think BK2 is a little too heavy as a cutting tool and too short as a chopping tool and a little too thick as a batoning tool. I think Bravo1 is the best survival knife in a small package. Thanks.
Stay away from the Bark River Kydex sheaths. They are junk. The standard leather sheaths the knives come with are better than the aftermarket leather sheaths, IME.

+nijo smudja You say the point very concisely.
Its what we call being a knife looney! It can happen with anything . . . for example "rifle looney!" ha ha
This must be one of the top amsr channels on CZcams. Very relaxing, beautiful diction, nice sounds!

Excellent review. I found it very enjoyable and informative to watch. Thank you for taking the time to share this with us.
Thank you for showing the differences between the sheaths on both knives. I am wanting to get started in leather working making sheaths and holsters and this is a great comparison.

I've had two different sheaths from Great Lakes for my Kalahari. Both have fallen apart after less than one month of daily carry.
+briargoatkilla I think Bark River knives deserve thicker leather than Great Lakes. I would pay 10 more dollars for thick leather with joy. Thanks.
+virtuovice I agree. Thank you.

Hello, there's one good knife, Roselli hunter, but with normal steel, not UHC. Perfectly holds edge.
as always a great review , very informative , thank you .. p. s. not sure about international costs , but have you looked at knives ship free site
I like the videos. I want to buy a knife. Tell me which one that you prefer.
I hope that the sheaths work for you. Will you go spring mountain vegetable harvesting soon?
+YasumotoUS Yes, I will.
Very nice .
thanks for the awesome review as usual
to go along with my last message was looking to have a Kydex and have a piggyback knife like the Aurora and the Aurora Mini. which handle material has the best grip wet and dry?
In my experience Canvas Micarta has the best grip regardless if it is polished or matte.
still using that dozier to open boxes nice

I know there are sword collectors in Japan. They have to be rich people because a good sword costs over 5 thousand dollars.
Cool look knife I can afford good knife A2 steel like 1095 to1075 high carbon steel
Thinner leather is also lighter.
where can we buy those BK sheats in europe? I can not find them anywhere
Waiko, how often do you see grizzly bear when in the wilds?
