Today we're adding a southern "Bean" style custom patchbox to my Kibler Southern Mountain Rifle. This is a traditional detail that really adds some pizazz to an otherwise great Kibler kit.
In the video, we make this box from scratch, but you don't have to, places like the Muzzleloaders Builders Supply, Dixie gun Works, and the Log Cabin Shop all carry a variety of premade patchboxes in various styles, all of which would be a perfect addition to your muzzleloader build.
This video is not a substitute for shop safety, or reading the safety manuals of your muzzleloader, tools or any other equipment you use to build your muzzleloader.
While long, the video details as much of the processes as I could share on how to make your own patchbox for a kibler kit. We go through the process of designing the box, selecting placement of the box, forging the patchbox hinge, inletting the box, inletting the patchbox cavity, making patchbox springs, making the patchbox closure, and mounting the patchbox.

Love the videos. I bet I have watched this video 5 or 6 times . I love these how to videos.
I hope it's been useful!
Hinge making is quite labour intensive yet very much worth it for the finished look and essentially is made exactly the same way they were through history.
Mine were usually used plate armour though but the principle is exactly the same.
Nice work!
Just finishing my Kibler .36 SMR. Thanks for the fine video on authentic patchbox fabrication and installation.
Glad to help!
Hey Ethan, just found this channel I normally follow you over on the NMLRA. Those Kibler SMR kits are awesome and yours is gonna be great with that patchbox. You did a fine job and it's very gratifying knowing you built it from scratch, good job. Can't wait to see it totally finished with the cherry stock.
Thanks so much Dan! I’m a big fan of this kit, it’s super nice, even with my amateur hands.
More videos with it coming soon!!
Perfect for storing your backup beans whilst out on the hunt
This is probably the 5th time I've watched this video. Currently inletting a patch box now
I hope it helps Rusty!
@@ILoveMuzzleloading it came out pretty good! To be honest it was the toe plate that gave me issues somehow. I don't know how that happened
Regarding when you spoke about planning. My father gave this to me and ill give it to you! It's the 6 P's of life and work.
Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Thanks for the great content!
I like that Tanner! Good thing to live by
I stumbled across this video I've been debating on not having a patch box til I saw this video this is the same rifle stock I have so this helps alot thank you
Glad you found it informative!
Another great video love them
Glad you like them!
It would be nice if Jim offered a patch box for this rifle.
great tutorial
Thanks Capt Ron!
Great job!
Thank you
Great video!
Thanks Jake!
Wow! Great job on that patch box. I’m impressed. Beautiful Southern mountain rifle. Being from Tennessee I’m a bit biased 😃
Thank you Dennis. I'm biased as well!
I wish I could participate on a build with yaw. I have the tools and material to make me one for my LGP rifle. Just making sure I watch and read enough information, before I start. Thanks for your work and channel sirs.
That’s the kit I’m after when I raise the money I’m thinking at least $1200.00 including the finish and a few more tools I need . Can’t wait !
I hope you enjoy!
I love Kibler's longrifles. I hope someday I'll have my one. :)
Now I know what kind of pachbox have to make for it. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Dope!
Wow. Looks like alot work.
It is, but very worth it I think
@@ILoveMuzzleloading can you do a match box on a finished gun.
Hi Ethan, Great video of making the patch box! What material did you guys use to make the Bean Patch box? I'm guessing some type of steel, and what thickness?
Ethan, I'm getting ready to make a patchbox like this and I'm wondering what thickness of your material is. Also curious what the dimensions of your finish patchbox is. You did a nice job on it. Thanks for the video.
I’ll try to get you some measurements here soon, thanks for asking!
Patience must have patience
I love you videos and have just started the same rifle you have. My question for you, is what type of finish did you use on the cherry stock? I've been testing scrape cherry with tru-oil, permalyn, and lye wash. I like the lye wash the best so far especially when you blush it with a heat gun. zDid you use the Permalyn?
Hi Scott!! Congratulations! I hope you enjoy it. I sanded, whiskered and scraped the stock for a feel I like. Then I used clear danish oil, applied several coats and scraped it back with scotchbrite.
It's a really simple finish, but works so well and the stock is aging in nicely now. I considered darkening it with lye, but chose to let it age with time, the figure of my stock was just too nice to cover up.
I hope this help! Reach out anytime!
@@ILoveMuzzleloading Thank you
What is your patchbox full of?
Walnut wood shavings, keeps any jags or tools from making a bunch of noise while I carry it
I’m trying to make a patch box for my Kibler SMR . I’m beating myself to death making the hinge . I think your dad bent your hinge and I need a better view of how he bent yours .
Hi Steve, we heated the end and bent it around with a pair of fine needle nose pliers. It is hard to get it in one go, and you need to do it to both sides of the hinge to get it even across
6 minute mark, i almost had to leave the video. That file running across the metal, almost like fingernails on a chalkboard.
Thanks Mike, working on making the future build videos easier to listen to
der quatscht viel zu viel. arbeit will ich sehen !!
Das höre ich manchmal! Ich versuche es für Neulinge zu erklären, hoffe, dass Ihnen das Video gefallen hat
