I found two BRZ’s available for sale, a dealer in Jersey told me they didn’t want to put mileage on it so I couldn’t test drive it. They also gave me a monthly payment of $120 over the other dealer that I tested the car at and bought it home from 2 days later

RTV is not really an issue. The oil pickup has 5 sides and only one side can be blocked. The high RPM, high G right turn oil starvation is not something really exclusive to this car. My C6 Z06 has the same problem except it's for sweeping left turns (in fact, this affects LS engines in general, at least back then). The 86 definitely needs oil system upgrades for the track. And for both of these cars, I don't think it was ever a problem until after installing aftermarket tires and coilovers. As for the engine sounds, I turned off the fake engine noises and it sounded fine.
The power for the GR86 is OK, especially for the price. It can barely keep up with an STI but not a lot of people say the STI is slow, and it's just as fast as other older (and more expensive at the time, considering inflation) sports cars that weren't considered slow (for example, the FD RX7's 14 seconds quarter mile and the GR86's 14 seconds quarter mile). I think it's like you said where the BRZ's throttle mapping is linear while the GR86 is very aggressive which leaves you expecting more when you floor it, despite both having the same power. And right now, temperatures are so high even my Z06 feels a lot slower.
I think the way the car looks and high praise from reviewers makes people expect even more from this car, even though it's among the cheapest new sports cars. I upgraded to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S's and CE28SL wheels which made noticeable improvements but I'm still wanting more.

I test drove this car last week. Coming from an RS3 it definitely felt slower but lighter and more fun to drive. Especially when keeping it in a high rev range and downshifting when over taking on the highway. Pretty fun to throw around in the corners as well.

You captured the dual identity of this car perfectly. Some days you feel it does EXACTLY what you want it to do, the engine feels enough, the throttle feels enough, and it even feels like it pulls better. Other days is the polar extreme opposite...and i have no idea why. (EDIT: and dont expect anything more after half throttle - you may as well forget the bottom half of the throttle exists, which is fine, but...odd as a mapping decision.)
I daily drove the fr-s from 2013 until 2023 and traded it in for a 2023 gr86. It was easier for me going from the gen1 to a gen2 to appreciate the improvements, but the more i think about it that might actually be a requirement bespoke to feeling that improvement - relativity.
Some words of encouragement for you - traded my 2023 gr86 in for a 2024 integra S (I too was offput by the oil pressure issues). Dont get me wrong, the S is nice, quick, and has the space and creature comforts i want...but...maybe its because I drove the 86 platform for so long that it felt like an extension of my body that i cant help but miss the experience. Theres something to be said about cars feeling like cars, a machine youre sitting in, operating, but with separation. The 86 feels like you.
When I'm old and able to afford two cars, you better bet I'm getting back in the 86. I think that's sayin somethin.

I have a U.K. model and it’s free of the charcoals filter in the air box, so we get a few more HP, we also have a cool climate so my air conditioning can be switched off, it’s a power sapper, I drive in the track mode all the time, it allows a bit of slip without cutting back power, the throttle mapping was far too aggressive for me and we don’t have a tuner in the U.K. so I purchased a throttle commander, simple unit that allows you so reduce the pedal sensitivity enough to allow me to drive the car smoothly in traffic, if which I couldn’t before that mod.
The amount of power is enough, it’s perfect for road use, I can thrash it and not lose my driving licence as easily as you would in high power turbo cars, but the lack of weight is the star of the show, with better tyres the handling round our back roads is stunning, it’s where the excitement is, long straight roads are not what this car is about, it’s narrow twisty B roads.
Stick with it, tune it, and get better lighter wheels and stickier rubber, then the handling will be reason enough to hold on to her.

I only test drove the automatic, and not for very long. The reason is, my dealer doesn't have enough manuals to allocate one vehicle for a test drive car. I'll say this right off the bat: I'll still get this car EVEN IN AUTOMATIC! That's how good it is...
That being said I still got to know the engine itself, which is the point here. I'll try and be concise; this engine is an 8/10 to me. I currently own a Mk7 GTI and it has an objectively better engine. Sure it's heavier and higher up, but the way it delivers power is more impressive. Torque comes early around 1600 RPM and stays to like 5k. I like turbos. They give you a bootful of acceleration, and some of them go stutututu~
But, and this might be 5 years of ownership speaking, I am a little over the whole turbo thing by now. To answer your question, no you're not alone in thinking the FA24 is kinda meh. But honestly, if you ever expected anything major out of this engine, with all due respect, you bought the wrong car. This isn't why the car was made. In today's world where every car is seemingly over complicated and overweight, the 86 seems... spartan. Too basic. Too underwhelming. But to some people like myself, that's a reason to get it. We like this car because it feels like something brand new from 20 years ago. This feels like an old school sports car from the 90s. Who cares that it "ONLY" makes 228 horsepower. If I can describe the way it drives in a word, it's: beautiful. This car drives as good as it looks. And boy does it look good. Personally, when I get mine, I'm not gonna touch the engine. From my drive, it became clear to me why this car exists, and I fell in love with it.

I feel this at night. When I leave work it's very fun, but I can't be sure cuz 1. there's little traffic at midnight, 2. I usually have a second-wind on the way home so I'm more awake. More than likely though the cool air does help even if mid-day traffic isn't that exciting to drive in. One thing I did notice from dynos is that the engine is sluggish while cold. On consecutive attempts when the oil is flowing better it performs better.

I drove a 2022 GR86 while I was out there on the Utah Adventure with Everyday Driver. I didn't have any issues with it, but I also spent most of my (admittedly short) time with it in the upper RPM range. I thought it was really great. I did have an opportunity to grab one that was still being built by Toyota at a nearby dealership, but passed on it partly because if I'm going to get rid of the Camaro I think I want a purely dedicated sports car (have no need for practicality), but also because of the potential engine issues. From what I've read, it just seems like a design flaw with the 2.4 liter engine that they need to fix so that long right hand turns don't potentially starve the engine of oil.

It’s decent at the very top when pushed to the limit. Definitely a momentum car. You know the other car I have but I haven’t revealed and it’s sooo much better.

    STEP 2: Octane 93! If you don't have 93 in your state. Mix ratio (91 10.3gal 100 2.9gal)
Step 3: TPS spec 32psi front 33psi rear
Step 4: 5w-30 synthetic performance oil w/ oil lubricant additive
Step 5: feel the rest. Not enough power buy performance, no enough trac get wider tires. Not aero get more areo.
BRZ/86 was made to improve the driver not the car.
Notice the amount of wrecked hellcats on a lot vs clapped out 2013 frs still driving on the road rev matching so people hear there UEL tomies. There is a lot more to discuss about this car but a lot also has to do with environment, psychological, and economy(3 keys)

The ecu will retard combustion timing thus reduces torque and power on 91

I have a 22 GR86 with 9200 miles that's been tracked once. For daily and spirited back road driving I keep the car around 3200-4000 rpms. I've found there's plenty of torque when i want to accelerate briskly and usually upshift around 5000rpms. I find this to be the sweet spot of the engine. It pulls nicely in this range and there's still plenty of headroom when doing long passes on the highway. I do agree with the previous comment that you can feel an extra pull around 4500rpms.
On the track, I had the rev limiter beeper set at 6500rpms and did hit it a few times. But I honestly didn't pay much attention to what the engine was doing at that point because I was concentrating so much on everything else!
That said, I did change out the wheels and tires (17" rpf1's/michelin PS4S'") which do help with acceleration and grip. So the wheels spin up faster and I hold a bit more speed in the corners. But I really see no need, at least for me, to be spinning the engine up to 6000rpms on a regular basis. It does fine by me lower down. If anything, I wish 1st gear was a little taller.

Seems like the fa24 was designed with a turbo in mind. They removed the turbo for this car, threw 1000 more revs at, now the torque just isn't there for most of the rev range. (Added: The fa24 engine wants loads of air and fuel (see fuel economy, or lack there of, when driving anywhere except outside of boost) it's starving without the forced induction because it's not tuned well enough to have good naturally asperated torque.)

Main things are the electronic throttle + heavy fly wheel, makes the factory tune feel very unresponsive when it should be more refined. Top end is abysmal.
I have pretty quick Evo 8. So I compare them all the time. But you really can’t because this thing is a “momentum” car. I can enter a corner way faster/confidently, load up my suspension and let it rip on the way out better than my evo can. My evo is lowered and has bilsteins too!
All in all. This car has 10/10 for handling but a 5/10 for power, which I feel is on purpose to make you more confident in the corners. Turbo would alter the driving characteristics a lot! I put it in the momentum car category with Miata’s, S2k’s, mr2, etc

When it comes to straight line performance it probably wont feel fast compared to something with much more torque. This car really shines in cornering/turns, and predictable. However you do need to prioritize whats important to you and want to feel out of a car. But like you said, for the price, you get alot of car for your money. Just keep the engine/ecu stock and drive how you normally would. If anything breaks its covered under warranty. If its still running well by 5yr/60k and you dont trust it before the warranty expires, sell/trade it in. No car is perfect and only time will tell how reliable these motors are. I plan to keep my (22 GR86 6AT w 11k ) til it blows, so hopefully it wont happen anytime soon😅 Best of luck regardless!

The lack of a turbo is the issue. With a turbo and around 300HP, this thing would be a real missile. But at least here in Europe, we complain at a very high level. We'll not be getting these pure sportscars anymore shortly and they sold only a couple of thousands in the whole of the UE. We'll be left with those electric washing machines for outrageous prices.Yes, they may have a million HP, but that's just not what a petrolhead wants.

Did you consider an MX-5 when you were purchasing your GR86? It may have less hp (181hp vs 228hp), but it's also a good deal lighter (1058kg in soft top form vs 1287kg), so their power to weight ratio is quite similar (171hp/ton vs 177hp/ton). Fuel-wise, it's also more friendly to your wallet, requiring only 91 octane vs 95 for the GR86 unless you want to tune it, in which case...
If you want more power from the MX-5, don't add turbos, but rather use a tuning package like this from SPS Motorsport (czcams.com/video/FS6D_nAceZI/video.html). It raises the rev-limit to a VTEC-like 8000rpm (same as the AP2 Honda S2000), and improves the power-to-weight ratio (204hp/ton).
The only downside to my suggestion is that since you already own a Mazda RX-8, I imagine it isn't preferable to own two cars from the same manufacturer. In any case, I hope you find a good solution for your GR86 dilemma.

A comparable MX5 that is track ready is the club model, those run about $40k. I got my GR86 at $29k. I looked at a Camaro SS 1LE for $47k. If you planned to take the Miata to the track, I think you’re better off looking at the NB’s and upgrading. If you want a twisty backroad car, I prefer the GR86 as the Miata is to soft factory unless you get the club which is to much $$. So the Miata IMO is only got the open car factor over the GR86.
BTW, that tune really only works for ND2’s.
