    What I've noticed in mine is that I have to be not as aggressive w/ the accel pedal to shoot flames. The way you did it in this vid is a bit too aggressive. It has to be a bit smoother, at least in my case. Also, the closer you are to 9k, the results don't seem as promising. I've shot the biggest flames at around 7-8k. Maybe that's my ECU map throwing a lot of fuel in around that range, idk. And in my case, I don't shoot nice flames. It's usually cannonballs that make you deaf and balls of fire. Try my technique, let me know if u get better results: when you're warm and ready to fire flame-age, bounce the needle between 6 and 8k, but don't be as aggressive as you were in this video. Let it be a smooth up and down of the needle.

    Tl:dr
    First of all the rotary engine is actually closer to a 4 stroke engine than a 2 stroke engine.
    In a 2t the power / intake cycles are combined and so are the exhaust / compression cycles. In a rotary each action is separated intake / compression / combustion / exhaust. Just because it's combusting on one face of the rotor and doing other actions on the other faces doesn't mean it's a two stoke. Technically a V6 is going through the exact same motions at any given time as a rotary. They're both drawing air in, venting gas and burning what's left at the exact same time.
    Secondly any car can throw flames. Removing the cat is the most effective way to do so, and engines never completely burn away all of the air fuel mixture, the catalytic converter changed the chemical make up of the exhaust gases so you're not dumping so many unburdened hydrocarbons an carbon monoxide. Without a cat you will shoot flames regardless of whether or not you have a 3" cat back exhaust, all you might be able to do is make it louder.
    Thirdly the real reason rotary engines are great at shooting flames is because they are so thermally inefficient compared to conventional engines. Rotarys dump so much fuel to keep it cooler and the exhaust port timing is static unlike your conventional engine that has variable cam timing. This is why the rotary is most efficient and power at a very specific rpm range, it's all down to port timing. Not only that but the rotary only has about half the time to burn off the air fuel mixture at any given rpm compared to the 4 stroke engine. Creating a build up of unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust manifold, hence why rotarys are known for high exhaust temps and melting cats. Also I've found that revving up and letting off at 3500rpm creates a really loud pop because at 3500rpm the second fuel injector starts up and momentarily makes the mixture rich, letting off at the right time while under load will make your exhaust sound like a gun shot. You get the same effect when the ssv opens at 7500rpm and you let off immediately afterwards. Revving up and down between 8 / 9k will fill the exhaust with hydrocarbons eventually but you create a lot of unnecessary heat and wear in the process.
    I understand that everyone is entitled to enjoy their car anyway they like and you might doing for educational purposes. But please try to understand what you are driving and that engines do not like relining while stationary. In my personal opinion a car looks infinitely cooler when they back fire while they're in motion.
    Fourthly premix will not make the RX8 more prone to backfire, synthetic 2t oil is designed to burn off easily and turn into a non-flammable vapour. It does create a better seal for the apexes help to reduce carbon though so definitely keep using it, oh and it smells fantastic when it burns too.
    Happy Brapping and enjoy your RX8.

      @adrianaustegard8928 Před 5 lety +1

      Just one question, not an argument but, a 2 stroke pulls in air, combust it and shoot it out at 2 revolustions. A rotary pulls in air, combust it, and send ut out in just one revolutions. That sounds alot more like a 2 stroke than a 4 stroke that has to draw in air in one revolusjon, comust it 2-3, send it out 4. Dont hate on me if im wrong or my spelling. Cheers

    • @JPGreeny92
      @JPGreeny92 Před 5 lety +4

      @@adrianaustegard8928 actually a 2 stroke does everything in only one revolution. There is the down stroke and then the up stroke, that is one complete revolution of the crank shaft.
      Technically speaking a rotary will do a full combustion cycle on 1 face of each rotor in one revolution of the E-shaft too. But the reason I say it is closer to a 4 stroke engine is because the ports never overlap like a 2 stroke, and the other stages of the combustion cycle are all separated as well. One rotor face can only do one of these jobs at any given time. Intake, compression, combustion, exhaust. Whereas a two stroke piston is always doing 2 jobs at one time. Intake & combustion. Exhaust & compression.
      I think where people get confused is when they compare a rotary to a 2 cylinder engine, when you should look at each face as a cylinder and compare it to a v6. Because just like a rotary which any given time will have two faces drawing in air, two pushing out exhaust, and depending on the position of each rotor, one will be combusting and the other will be compressing. The rotors are offset by 60 degrees.
      But it's the exact same story for a v6 piston engine, each piston is at a different stage of the combustion cycle. The engine is drawing in air the same time it is compressing on another cylinder, and on another it is igniting and on another it is exhausting etc etc.

    • @them26pershing59
      @them26pershing59 Před 3 lety +3

      The first generation of the Rx8 did not have three oil injectors like the ones from 2009-2012. Most of the problems you hear from the RX8 rely in the first generation. There is only two in each housing and those two oil injectors are at an angle to get the sides of the apex seals. Sometimes the oil doesn't do a good enough job with the apex seals and that's why they end up breaking is due to lack of lubrication. Its recommended to premix on the first gen due to a lack of oil injectors. Also, Mechanics at dealerships aren't very trustworthy.. let alone mechanics at all if they're a big corporation. That's the other thing too is that the guy probably was thinking it was just a standard piston engine, you'd be surprised on how many people know about the Rx8, let alone the rotary engine. Premixing is recommended on the first gen, I own a 40th Anniversary edition, and I've had it for about 6 months and even with a small oil leak, it kicks ass. You will have to check oil levels every other weekend, It is a mechanics car. JASO certified is what I've heard about premixing, I've been using the Lucas stuff because its just easier to get. The Idemistu is probably a lot better but there is also very little power gain if any with premixing... its just acting like an extra heat shield. There's a whole lot more stuff for maintenance too, Changing oil every 3k miles or less is recommended, maximum of 4-6. Keeping up with plugs and the cooling. The ignition system and the cooling system is probably one of the most important things for the rotary engine to keep it going.. They produce a ton of heat. Those plugs are also very hot and foul over time. A ton of information regarding about this car is over at RX8Club, you should check them out.

      No, 2 stroke oil, not engine oil... It's called pre-mixing, helps the engine be more lubricated and last longer. It gives some blue smoke, but that's ok...but be precise with the amount you mix, to much can leave deposits in the catalic converter and sparkplug. That's about the easiest way to explain.

      To take care of the engine, make sure to red-line it 9 to 10k every other drive at least. Normally this would be a terrible thing to do in a piston engine, but these are not piston engines, and they need to be raced often to keep carbon from building up. My car has 88k miles, second engine replaced at just 50k miles because the original owner didn't follow the rotary principle of "drive it like you stole it" attitude.
      Typical recommendations:
      pre-mix 2 cycle oil when you are filling up with gasoline
      many people use heavier oil than the factory recommends (Mazda politics changed every car to a super thin oil, and this is often blamed as the early death from wear of rotaries, the RX7 did use thicker oil)
      Change the oil more often (I did the math, this car costs me $1k more per year with low miles than my other car, so an extra $30 a year on oil changes isn't going to kill me, not doing it might kill the engine though), so 3k miles is what I do, you might go a little higher but its up to you. Oil type is highly debated.
      Red-line them!!!! People have had these die in 20k miles from driving them like a grandma, please do not kill your rotary from loneliness.

      Unfortunately the Apex seals wear to the point of very low compression. The vehicle will exhibit the following symptoms.
      1) Will not idle after engine warms up.
      2) Hard start or no start after engine warms up.
      3) Loss of horsepower.
      4) Engine has difficulty reaching higher rpms or redline.
      The rest of the RX8 is amazing, 6-spd manual transmission is a little weak in 2nd gear but manageable. The ride, handling, comfort, design, style, smooth, quick acceleration, stopping power, it's a very special sports car, just be financially ready to operate it, have money set aside for that new engine.

      I almost got 20 mpg. I was in 6th gear at 65 mph drafting a Semi burning premium, but I only made 19.2 mpg (trip of 200 miles drafting)... Close though!
      My 30 year old Mercedes made 40+ MPG driving like mad on the highway, or ridiculously high if you drafted, but it was a turbo-diesel.
      The RX makes single digit in town for me (half highway/half town I get 13 to 16 mpg). Its the SMILES per gallon that count!
      If its high MPG vs high fun, I'll take a bicycle before a boring car (I actually do enjoy cycling, raced in a fair chunk of races last year. Just collegiate level having fun)

    I just bought an rx8 3 days ago!!!( woot woot ) and the only issues is that the o2 censor had failed... so now this gives me a good reason to get a good exhaust.. im new to this so what will I need... a mid pipe and a catback?

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 Před 6 lety

      The exhaust modification is optional, but if you do track racing, its probably a good idea. (Please note it may not be legal)
      The O2 sensor as I'm sure you figured out (and replaced by now) is very cheap and not a big deal (pretty much like changing spark plugs), so you might have already modded your car. If you haven't, I don't think its a huge improvement chopping the catalytic converter out (does a lot of pollution as is, which is why rotaries are illegal to make). You definitely won't pass emissions if they test. That being said, the rotary likes to spit fire and run hot exhaust (inefficiency), so apparently you can burn through a cat converter (still mind blowing nothing else melts first, so I would need to see that myself to believe it). I'm not sure what the power difference is (which is the main reason people remove cat converters), but its optional. Mine has a few things modded, but I bought it used, so I don't know how they are stock (I should test drive sometime at a dealership, but I haven't).
      Since you haven't had it long, this list might help you out. Typical recommendations:
      pre-mix 2 cycle oil when you are filling up with gasoline
      many people use heavier oil than the factory recommends (Mazda politics changed every car to a super thin oil, and this is often blamed as the early death from wear of rotaries, the RX7 did use thicker oil). Oil type is highly debated.
      So its optional on the exhaust, but if you do track racing, its probably a good idea.
