A popular wine bar and restaurant is getting complaints from neighbors who say it's too loud and the crowd spills onto the sidewalks. Betty Yu talked to the owner.
Nice one cbs. Really classy and timely segment here in light of record breaking freeway shootings and homelessness, you choose to target a legit business as your community action piece. I actually think this street has improved due to the fresh atmosphere. Which Oakland needs more of. Mind you, this street corner was historically noisy and unsafe being between a lively gas station and a dimly lit shopping center. The only thing different now is that patrons who clearly are not from temescal are dining here now.
What are you talking about? I watched it and it convinced me to lean on the side of the business owner. The restaurant looked totally fine and the complainers looked unhinged. If anything, I didn't know about the place but I want to try it out now.
So wait… you live in Temescal within a block of a whole bunch of restaurants and want the absolute silence of living in the middle of suburbia. You don’t get convenience of walking to businesses and no one around.
The Monday scene looked very tame. I have eaten here several times, and the food is amazing. I am not a drinker, but apparently their wines are good. And they have several non-alcoholic drink options. Anyway, the last time I went was on a Sunday night and a neighborhood woman actually called the police (one officer showed up) because someone was parked in an area with red paint on the curb. I mean, maybe they were wrong for it, but aren't these the same police officers who aren't able to respond to violent crimes and property theft? The woman kept pacing around and talking to herself for a while during our dinner. Mind you, we were not "partying" whatsoever. People go there for quiet conversation and good food (and wine). We had a baby stroller with our infant child! Anyway, seems like a wonderful business and the neighborhood should try to embrace them. They seem to be trying their best to appease the people living in the cul de sac.
The only livable safe place in Oakland that gives you vibes of Europe, dine outside etc… the people who complained they do not know better. I am not a phycologist but these people don’t know what a real neighborhood looks like…
There's some seriously deeper stuff going on with that lady who's complaining about this. Miss nose ring. She sees a group of civilized, quiet, educated, good-looking people enjoying a glass of wine and having a nice time with their dates and friends and that triggered something dark and hateful in her big time.
There are far more important things to be concerned about in Oakland than a small business owner who is a POC. I thought this was a good thing or does it not fit your standards? I’m confused….
Exactly…two people of color complaining about another person of color who has a successful business in Oakland. SMH. Parking has always been bad over there on Shattuck. It’s not just because of this man’s business. At least they don’t have to worry about homeless people on the damn sidewalks like in SF or in other parts of Oakland.
The food at Snail bar is absolutely amazing and well worth the wait. I've gone a half dozen times and the food, service and wine never cease to impress. Lots of good spots a block away to have a drink while you wait for your table.

The old homes in Oakland usually have shit insulation, so that's probably contributing to neighbors being mad too. If all the walls were a little thicker and they had double + triple pane windows they wouldn't mind it much at all. Other than the parking situation, haha. Those homes were built during a time when most families only needed one family car.
That's a busy intersection. It's right across from the "mall" area and next to the freeway. Typical Berkeley/Oakland people complaining just to be relevant.
i wonder if these neighbors want more legitimate & healthy small businesses to simply leave Oakland. Just reserve the whole town for homeless and assaulting robbers, Yayyyy!!!
the lady will hire a gang and ransack the business. she is complaining about whites and asians sitting together and drinking wine. it is hilarious how she says it is public safety issue.
It looks like there are other businesses in that area. Restaurant is a restaurant as long as it is not rowdy. It is fine. The restaurant owner must be doing something right to attract business. It is a good sign to see his restaurant is busy. If it is not in Oakland I want to try it out after this report.
Very simple if the residents have parking permits block the parking spot after happy hour so the residents that live there have a place to park after work because people that attend a bar during happy hour shouldn’t even be driving they should just Uber there
Living above a popular place like that probably does suck… But it looks like it’s just an apartment up there and if you don’t like it… it’s time to move on…
That comment's wrapped loosely in a not-so-veiled innuendo. Drawing parallel between the 'hood plaintiff & style of song/dance- sounds like scapegoating, no?!
