- Join me as I backpack solo in Crater Lake National Park. My route is a 25 mile loop over 2 nights/3 Days on what the park refers to as the Small PCT Loop. The first two days I trek through the forest and encounter some challenges. I save the best for last and on the final day hike the Rim Trail. The views are absolutely stunning of the USA's deepest lake...Crater Lake.

Can I say, when the music swelled, and the symmetry of Wizard Island was finally revealed in all its alien communication glory, I was immensely satisfied. These videos are becoming rock concerts for your fans that have either put in the trail miles (like me) or those that hope to have the chance to experience it all coming together in the wilderness one day. You are not "solo" as far as your fans are concerned.
Thank you so much for the kind words. That means a lot! ❤️🙏
I can really appreciate how difficult it must be to get a lot of this video solo. Especially that long shot at 1:31. It's a lot of work to make a really good video but well worth it. Good job.
@Logan Titus No, I didn't. I recognize it requires a ton of going back and forth but man it looks great in the overall video while providing some action in the shots instead of just landscape. She makes it look easy.
Watched this on the big screen, wow what a great job showing the views, it's like I was there however sitting here comfortably with my first cup of coffee....ha ha ha! Glad you hiked it so I could watch...LOL!
Beautiful backpacking trip. Really enjoyed the scenery on Crater Lake area. Going around and through all that blowdown can make for scary times, but you handled it very well. I can see your confidence has grown in doing solo hikes. Also enjoyed you setting up camp and preparing meals and descriptions of your camp sites. This is the way backpacking videos should be made with emphasis on scenery, camp setup, and all the other little things that happen, like blowdowns, changing plans for locations, gathering water, etc.. Again had a great time watching and thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much. 🙏
Your voice, music and photography is good for the soul very calm and relaxing. Thank you for sharing your wonderful gift.
Thank you 🙏!
Stunning! Thank you for sharing beauty!
What a wonderful embrace of our mother nature .. the land that oxygenates us gives us authentic emotions thanks for these images that are good for the soul and the ❤️! Hello from Italy🌹🥂😉
Ciao! Gracie!
I was at Crater Lake in the winter on a day that there was absolutely no breeze, none. The rim was covered in a deep blanket of snow. As you stood at the rim and looked out you could not distinguish up from down. You had no perspective. The lake looked like the sky and vis a versa. Very weird and wonderful experience.
Only hearing the sounds of nature for 24 hours; for me, this would be the epitome of peace.
Many years ago (pre-internet) I heard about a guy spoke about how there were so few places (less than 10) that you could sit for 20 minutes (I think that was the number) without hearing man-made noise. This is similar www.npr.org/2018/08/10/638563244/take-a-moment-and-listen-to-what-sound-without-human-made-noise-is-like
Another fantastic video. Appreciate the window into your experiences.
This bittersweet video is one of my favorites! Thru your eyes my emotional journey travels between devastation, new birth, and artistic beauty. Your ending is Awesome. Well Done 👍👏😎❤
❤️🙏
Well said T O.
I started to watch just now (12:37 p.m.) but decided to wait and watch this evening with a nice dram of single malt Scotch. Looks like it will be another great video! 😎💙💛💙💛
😀😀
The single malt Scotch was very good. (Lagavulin 16 Y.O.)
The video was superb! Beautiful country!
You gave me just enough of your presence to enable me to enjoy this wonderful trek vicariously, without making it all about you.
I felt like I was your hiking companion.
As always, outstanding scenery, outstanding music!
Many thanks!
😎💙💛💙💛💙💛
Thank you so much! Always appreciate your support!
Wow what a great payoff in the end! This is one of the places I have always wanted to visit, maybe next year when I go out west I will make it there. Thanks for the preview Cat appreciate it
You gotta go! It must be seen in person. :)
I absolutely love Crater lake.
This video. WOW. You have an eye for the shot. I could watch this over and over. So relaxing and peaceful
Awesome Catherine , your film chided me right out , really liked the shots of the sun through the trees , thank you ........... Tree
The amount of B-roll footage you shoot is amazing. That’s a lot of work.
One of my favorite CZcams channels by far
Thank you so much!
As always simply stunning, peaceful , remote thank you for sharing Stay safe cheers from Australia ❤️🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Catherine, you’ve out done yourself. Absolutely, stunning!
Thank you 🙏!
Not sure what's more Beautiful...- you surrounded by Nature...or the Nature that surrounds you..!
Catherine, the Senery and production are both absolutely breathtaking! I can appreciate the work you must put into making these incredible videos. Thank You 🙏
All 3 of my sons are Eagle Scouts, and we were trying to guess the weight of your pack. 40 to 50 lbs? Plus the 12 mile day is a real hike!
The slow-mo sun flare shot was brilliant....so much great photography...well done........
Thank you so much!
Beautiful and peaceful! Thank you~
I thought I had watched 100s of RVers Hiker videos but yours is by far the best... thanks for sharing your journey...
Thank you so much Patty!
Catherine, you absolutely owe it to yourself to return to Crater Lake in August during the peak of the wildflower season. Your beautiful video will become stunning. I lived there part time for a year and studied the east side of the park for a federal watershed analysis. There are hidden gems in this park beyond the ends of the trails. If you return, I would share a couple of them with you. There is a big off trail waterfall that even the rangers do not know about ( at least they didn't when I discovered the falls years ago). This place is true magic for the adventurous with patience.
Crater Lake gets the most snowfall in Oregon, and is one of my favorite places to cross country ski, or snowshoe, in the spring, around the rim of the lake. They usually have to chainsaw the snow away from the hotel, to get it open, in the early spring. Nicely shot even though it was pretty dry and burned out - it's a workout climbing over those downed logs - I've been on the PCT, in large tree fall areas, where it was hard finding where the trail continued on.
I REALLY LIKED THIS WHOLE VIDEO BUT ENJOYED THE FRAMING @23:00 WITH THE TWO TREES AND THE LAKE IN THE DISTANCE. I REMEMBER BY THE LODGE A NEAT LITTLE WHITE SAND BEACH, WHICH REALLY LOOKED OUT OF PLACE, BUT CRATER LAKE IS BEAUTIFUL AND YOU HIT IT ON A PERFECT DAY.
Thanks my daughter , really you are doing nice job for me.By heart I am telling you really I feel that I am walking with you.God bless you my daughter.
Excellent video as always. Your still shots of the lake are spectacular! I've been there several times in 60+ years and it still takes my breath away everytime I see it! Thank you!
Catherine this video is excellent. Composition, music, quiet moments, really great job.
Thank you Andrea.
Amazing video Catherine ,, after all that we has been shown this past year ,, I wasn't sure a sight like this would even be remaining...Thank You for this ,, and all you are doing for the hearts and minds of many.....
..... Stay Safe and God Bless .....
❤️❤️🙏
Exquisite !! Profound appreciation for, yet another, visual & sensory banquet .. Cheers.
Crater Lake is a beauty. The color of the water! I’m glad people aren’t allowed in it, so it stays pristine. Been too long since I’ve been there.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful impressions of the nature with the amazing music 👍🍀😊
Thank you 🙏
I've been here once, in 1958: I was with my mom, favorite aunt, and younger sister on a road trip (I was 8 years old!). We were coming back from Seattle, and headed back thru Utah to Dallas. Even now, I still remember seeing the lake and esp. Wizard Island. That trip was the most incredible I've ever been on, and this place was but one of many reasons!
Thank you so much for your beautiful imagery!!!
Thanks Catherine great video of solo hike of beautiful Crater Lake. Stay Safe
I marvel at your courage to do everything you do.
Beautiful country! Bigfoot is watching...
The views of Crater lake are spectacular glorious place looks like a very beautiful hike and the music was very good too take care

Absolutely Amazing! Thank You ❤️
Thank you Rudy!
I don't know how you do it... but your videos keep getting better and better. Amazing views and footage, composition, sounds.... Best hiking channel on CZcams! Never knew this area was so beautiful. Even with the dead trees... it's amazing. Thank you! :)
Thank you so much John.
A very good video and such beauty. It brings peace to me after surgery a few weeks ago with 4 bypasses. Thanks for your adventures. ❤️👌
🙏❤️🙏
A beautiful video! 15 years ago I did a bicycle tour in Oregon and I took a day off at Crater Lake and took the Park Ranger boat tour around the lake. Absolutely incredible! Thanks for the scenery and bringing back memories. It is such a beautiful place!
Hello Catherine, a big thank you for sharing this beautifully filmed video. You out did yourself again. It is always a treat to see one of your videos, they never disappoint. The very best to you for your good health and safety. 🤗
Your choice of music enhances the feeling of solitude while out there. Good job.
Wow...spectacular scenery.
They say the water is the most beautiful blue. Crater Lake is on my bucket list.
At the start of your vid I was thinking : That looks a lot like areas I have hiked in CA. on he PCT and I was going to ask if some of your hike there took you onto the PCT but when you got to your camp area you mentioned you were right off the PCT. that answered my question. You are an amazing woman Ms. Cat and these vids really take me back to times in my life , not so long ago, when I could go for days in the wilderness and be more happy there than anywhere else. Now I Jeep and still get to places where I am the last person on Earth and I love it. I so much Love and Appreciate your vids, Thank you so much . Looking as good as ever Ms. Cat. Keep living the good life. Cheers.
Loved this video. Catherine I love how you catch great views. I have been to Crater Lake before. But I looked at it from the parking lot and went to area where you can see it better where they roped it off so you couldn’t go any further. It’s the deepest nan made lake. It’s beautiful. I didn’t know you could hike fine there and camp. Sorry you did it all yourself. Hope you had fun. Glad the tree branch didn’t hit you while you were camping. Looking forward to your next video. See you soon!
Wow, what a spectacular adventure, Catherine! Thanks for sharing it. A friend and I hiked around Crater Lake in 1969 and we found some lava tubes that had ice on the walls...it was late summer and we crawled into them down to around 25 feet below the surface. It got too weird so we exited. Crater Lake should be on the list of Wonders of the World. That shot at 18:28 brought back that sensational feeling we felt as we approached the lake. Great job on catching the beauty and wonder of this very special place.
Stunning. A loss for words.
So beautiful! I'm ashamed to have lived in OR for almost ten years without having visited Crater Lake. Hope to remedy that this fall. Thank you for the incentive :)
When I visited Crater Lake in July of 1999, the snow piles in the visitor center parking lot from plowing were still 10 feet high!
Have you gone yet?
@@akeridae Nope.
You are gifted with the art of film production.
Thank you Tim!
I drove up to Crater Lake with friends years ago..parked and made a short hike around part of lake. While there another hiker came up trail saying he saw a bear..it was pretty awesome views. You have a lot of stamina..thanks for sharing.
Another awesome video Catherine.
I'm in the Sierras for a week for my birthday (10 -03) .
Making the best of it since the forests are closed right now due to fires.
Have a beautiful day beautiful woman!!!!!!!
Crater Lake is a very quiet place. The night sky is amazing to . Crater Lake Lodge is a nice place to take a break from the trail . Wizard Island is a marvel by itself. Awesome place!

PCT😳😳😳! Great video once again Catherine!
Very nice video Catherine! Glad you saved Crater Lake to last. You handled all the blowdowns and trees falling very well.
Thank you Bryan!

Beautifully shot video of an amazing lake. What a magical place. Thanks for sharing. Adventure on!
Thank you Tammy!
The amazing places you take us, you give me peace Catherine, thank you.
Wonderful photography. You show the destruction of the fires as well as the new growth that will replace it. Marvelous.
What great adventures and glorious photography and videos. I am a 79 y/o retiree - an American expat who lives in a small town (Boquete) in the mountains of western Panama. I dropped out of college in 1962, joined the U.S. Navy, was stationed at the Oakland Naval Hospital in Northern California from 1962 until the end of 1966. Two years later while living in El Cerrito, I had a housemate who would become a close friend. He did a bit of rock climbing, and occasionally hung out with the rock climbers at Yosemite's Camp Five. One of the best climbers in that group was also an excellent photographer named Galen Rowell, another East Bay resident (Berkeley) who owned a local auto repair shop. After Rowell sold the business in 1972 to pursue his twin passions, and became world famous for both his photography (which in pre-internet days we enjoyed via "coffee table books") and his mountain climbing conquests. This was four years before I finished my "return to college" quest at U.C. Berkeley with a degree in Conservation of Natural Resources, including some field work in the northern Sierra Nevada.
Your eye for framing and composition, and your gentle, but never silly or overbearing narration are an absolute delight. Your inclusion of appropriate music and your occasional bits of silence - something that many of us experience while viewing the wonders of nature in real life - make your videos perfect for my enjoyment now that I can no longer enjoy them in person. I will be watching all of your videos, many more than once, as I sit in my casita in this little mountain paradise far from my beloved U.S. West mountains, seashores and forests.
Thank you for what you do. You're work is so good, that I think this tribute to Galen Rowell applies to you as well:
“Galen Rowell was a man who went into the mountains, into the desert, to the edge of the sea, to the last great wild places in the world to be absorbed by their grace and grandeur. That is what he did for himself. For the rest of us, he shared his vision with-click-the release of a shutter, creating photographs as timeless, as stunning, and as powerful as nature itself.” -Tom Brokaw, from the foreword of Galen Rowell: A Retrospective

Even with the devastation from the fires, the scenery was still beautiful and shows the cycle of life. And Crater Lake! How beautiful!

When the sign says 3 miles, you do 6 ! This would make me nuts, as I hate backtracking

Fantastic video. Thank you for sharing!
Super excellent nice great what else I can say 👍👌👏💪😀
Fantastic video, as always. Loved backpacking but can't anymore. I really liked how you captured the day to day of backpacking. The sound of the wind in the trees, the stove, breaking down camp...Nice job.
Wow once again. Amazing scenery.
Thank you!
Hi , me again...LoL...just a quick note . When I camped in areas where there was a lot of dead fall or wind blown branch debris I would try and find fallen trunks that looked like a Tic tac toe board shape or a Hashtag shape if you will and I would set up my tent in the square in the middle . This way I had a buffer zone if a trunk or branch fell the already downed debris could be my protection especially if the cross trunks were up above 4 feet or higher. Sounds like a scary night you endured while branches fell around in the forest but sounds amazing too. Cheers.
