  • Flushing your water heater is one way you can add years to its lifespan. This process removes any sediment building up at the bottom of your hot water heater. This buildup of sediment can cause corrosion to your tank and reduce its heating efficiency. I take you through a detailed step by step process on how to drain and flush your water heater and explain why this is necessary. I'll even show you how to keep your shut-off valve from leaking!

      You're welcome! You may pull out your anode rod and look at that, and clean your fridge coils too. I have videos on both of this, and they are commonly overlooked or not known about. Also, keep your furnace filters, clean, which I'm sure you already know. And if it has a basement, make sure you get water away from the walls during the rain. Make sure gutters are working properly and not plugged. I'm thinking of doing a playlist called "what homeowners need to know" sometime in the future.

      Ditto. That's why I'm here. I just noticed that my HVAC was installed by someone who must have been doing it for the first time, and in a hurry, then I looked slightly to the right, and saw my water heater. I'm like "Uh... The water here is really... hard. I'm gonna just go flush that now." Then decided to look up how to do that. ;)

    No water comes out when the inlet water valve is shut off, I tried every combo of every water faucets on and off. Only time is when the inlet is open water flows out the drain perfect, soon as inletis off it stops. I know the tank is full bc I redid steps with out running the sinks inside after filled tank. any ideas?

      Not all. Theres 2 types in the USA, most of the brands are like in my abode rod video, where you take it out with a 1 1/6" socket. The other is Bradford white (not sure what order brands) where it's part of the hot water nipple

    wouldn't it be easier to set it on pilot ? Also, how often does the anode rod needs changing?

    • @HandymanHertz
      @HandymanHertz  Před 13 dny

      Yeah, pilot would be easier, I just felt telling people to turn it off would be better overall. It depends on your water quality on how often you change out anode rod. I have a friend in Wisconsin that didnt last long and had to replace his 2 year old water heater. Some areas every 5-10 years it seems. You can pull it out and check it in no time.

      What do you mean?

    • @levikemp
      @levikemp Před 14 dny

      You should wait until the water heater is full. After you turn the supply back on and there is no more air in the lines to the faucet, turn off the faucet. Then listen for water flowing into the water heater tank to stop. You can do it after the air is out of the line but it's safer to ensure the tank is full.

    Why not replace the leaking valve?

    • @HandymanHertz
      @HandymanHertz  Před 3 měsíci +3

      You can, but it's not worth the hassle to go to the store, buy one for $25, come back home, drain the water heater again and install it, in my opinion. Cheaper and saves money to put a cap on, and that cap will likely outlast my old water heater. It's an option for people, I may do a video down the road on how to replace it.

    @jarrodhollenbeck4284 Před 3 měsíci +1

    As someone who has installed more than 700 water heaters I have to say I'm not impressed.Yeah makes far more sense to just put a cap on a bad valve instead of taking the three minutes to change it out. And be careful just telling someone to "go ahead and change the anode rod". If this hasn't been done in the first few years you better be careful. I've seen the top of the rod snap off because of the amount of sediment on a neglected tank.
    Oh and your water pressure must be atrocious with those half inch lines

    • @HandymanHertz
      @HandymanHertz  Před 3 měsíci +5

      Our city Water pressure is great, no complaints here. Some people would rather not spend the time to go get a valve, drain their water heater, and spend $25 bucks on a valve when a cap will likely outlast the water heater. Not everyone has the skill or may be intimidated to install a valve. At least it's an option for them...they obviously know they can replace the valve. People like options.

    Honestly you’re always wrong so it’s so many of these videos you need to angle the outflow pipe to a 45° angle in the air and pump that that will actually do all this stuff that you’re doing after waiting hours

      If im making out what this person is saying- they are making a case for an alternate way of using some sort of pump to drain it faster instead of waiting for gravity to do it?
      Cant be sure but it sounds like their saying you're "always so wrong" because your showing a process that at one point is slightly different from theirs?
      But again...can't be sure

      I too am lost by this comment. As a plumber for 40 years i can tell you i 💯 agree with draining the heater. I have found the best way is tomhook up a compressor to a cold spigot and blow the water out. All the debris in the bottom get forced out with the air and water. Works great and fast

  • @MrSuzuki1187
    @MrSuzuki1187 Před 2 měsíci

    By turning off the cold water supply, you are NOT FLUSHING THE WATER HEATER! You are only draining it. I just did mine and common sense told me to leave the cold water valve on so that the incoming water would flush the tank and not just drain it as you are doing. And by leaving the water valve open, you don't need to turn on a sink spigot to let air in the top of the tank. What don't you understand about the term FLUSHING? I opened my drain valve and because water was coming in at the top, the water drained quickly and was replaced by clean water. I let it flush for about 5 minutes, then closed the water drain valve and viola! My water heater was flushed and not just drained. All of you so called experts turn the cold water valve off. Who made you an expert?

    • @HandymanHertz
      @HandymanHertz  Před 2 měsíci +8

      Why don't you watch peoples whole video first so You don't embarrass yourself in the comments like you just did. It's apparent you didn't watch me video. Plus, what you did didn't flush anything. when you don't drain it first, it doesn't agitate any of the sediments. What it sounds like you did is what you do every time you turn on the bath or any other hot water faucet in the house. Hate to break it to you, but it sounds like you just wasted your time. I guess you're not smarter than us "experts" after all. 🤷‍♂️😆👎🏼
