  • The Mac Studio is a great desktop powerhouse from Apple, but be sure to configure it to your needs, or you may end up disappointed. I discuss some of the ways I use the Mac Studio, including taking full advantage of 10GbE connectivity.

Not an elegant design???!!! Have you seen EVERY PC and PC case ever? Maybe it’s not as innovative as the iMac G4 from 2003 but it’s certainly elegant.

Of all the Mac's I have owned, which is many, this will be the least attractive. Especially the front. I like the bottom then best. I do love it's form factor and how powerful it is and that's what really matters.

I purchased the base M1 Studio Max from Best Buy and it was delivered on March 22nd. Since I moved up from an M1 Mac mini (16/512) I didn't need to purchase any peripherals. I fall into the "prosumer" category and this computer is perfect for my needs, couldn't be happier.

@@jckv.digital Hey there buddy! No, I canceled because I went with a MBPMax laptop 16" with 64gb of ram, 32cores and 2tb storage. I got it from B&H. I couldn't understand why it takes so long through the Apple site and one day sitting here, I called B&H just to see. They had one MBP in stock fully loaded and I went with it. I got it all hooked up to my external peripherals with just 2 dongles. (USB C to A, USB C to Ethernet) Working like a champ. All this power is new to me and just breeze through Photoshop and Lightroom. Amazing! If you have a laptop and like that format, I'd say go with the M1 16", you won't regret it; it's a beast and you'll have the best screen out there period and it's super silent. All the reviews I've seen about this laptop are positive, some might think it's too heavy, but I don't mind. Fits in my carrying case fine or my backpack. The battery life is unbelievable. You can throw at it all your edits and it doesn't blink. You'll love it if you decide to get one.

I special ordered the Mac Studio M1 Max the day after the Apple announcement. I opted for the 1 TB SSD. It arrived from China in 26 days via UPS Air. I have since added a SABRENT Thunderbolt 3 to Dual NVMe M.2 SSD Tool-Free Enclosure (EC-T3DN). I had two existing TEAMGROUP MP34 1TB with DRAM SLC Cache 3D NAND TLC NVMe1.3 Gen3x4 M.2 2280 Laptop & Desktop PCIe SSD(R/W Speed up to 3,400/2,900 MB/s) TM8FP4001T0C101. I set it up in raid 0. It writes at up to 2700 MB/sec and reads at up to 2200 MB/sec when connected to the Studio. I think what impressed me the most is the quality of video and audio. My film collection is 4k H265 HDR 10 bit in MKV wrappers. I use a Soundblaster X3. See my specs ad reported in "System Information":
    Sound Blaster X3 Speakers:
    Default Output Device: Yes
    Default System Output Device: Yes
    Manufacturer: Creative Technology Ltd
    Output Channels: 6
    Current SampleRate: 192000
    Transport: USB
    Output Source: Default
    Displays:
    DELL U2718Q:
    Resolution: 5120 x 2880 (5K/UHD+ - Ultra High Definition Plus)
    UI Looks like: 2560 x 1440 @ 60.00Hz
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Rotation: Supported
Please note that my 4k Dell monitor is actually a 5K/UHD+ monitor when connected to a thunderbolt port using a usb-c to Mini Display port connector. This was a pleasant surprise.
The X-3 has a 115db s/n ratio. It has 8 output channels but I only use 6 of them. I can't use any of the SBX functions. The Creative driver doesn't support SBX with M-1 yet. That's not a problem for me since I always leave everything flat.
The decoders in the Studio are amazing. Every other computer I have used the X-3 ended up with audible crosstalk between the front and center channels. This has no crosstalk. I think it is because he hardware decoders in the Studio as so fast that phase shifts between channels, if any, are microscopic. Audio is perfect. I hear individual orchestral instruments that I never heard before.
Video is the same. I keep noticing detail that I never saw before. It's like a layer of dust has been removed from the screen.
I write simulations using National Instruments LabView software. I had now problems with M-1.
Setup was a dream. I let the Mac Studio update from my late 2014 Mac Mini. I updated my licenses from Clean My Mac and Blue Ray Player Pro. Everything transferred perfectly.
Last thoughts: The thunderbolt channels are totally independent of each other. I don't think the Mac Mini's are. Each Studio thunderbolt port can daisy chain. With a 370 watt power supply the Studio has plenty of power to operate these Thunderbolt channels at full capacity. Oh, and it never even gets warm.

I am never ALL about the GQ look. To me the Mac Studio "Cube" is a look that I like. Love all the space to keep the device cool, and I feel this design might have started out life with an "Intel Inside".
Yes internal storage speed with the large storage options is something I would do if I was still working in the professional production world. I would also look to purchase a SOC processor that was a step above what would meat my needs at this time. Who knows what tomorrow will bring when it comes to the tools needed to complete the job. Always love to have room to grow.
Now not in the professional work anymore so my "always on" plugged into power 7/24 to replace my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) 2TB SSD storage is my MacBook Air M1 chip with 8‑core CPU, 7‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine, 16GB unified memory, 2TB SSD storage. Why did I not purchase the Mac mini? Almost came down to flip of a coin Mac mini, or MacBook Air. Thing is with the MacBook Air, and an external monitor like the Studio Monitor I can set these up in a two screen configuration if I want to. Also the MacBook Air gives me the option to take it with me, and use remotely if I have the need.
Leave my MacBook Air plugged into power all the time after iStat Menus was showing that charging was paused at 80%. This needs to be an option that is on by default in all devices like iPhone, iPad, MacBook's. With macOS Big Sur or later, your Mac learns from your charging habits to improve the lifespan of your battery.
In macOS Big Sur or later, Optimized Battery Charging is designed to improve the lifespan of your battery and reduce the time your Mac spends fully charged. When the feature is enabled, your Mac will delay charging past 80% in certain situations. Your Mac learns you're charging routine and aims to ensure that your Mac is fully charged when unplugged.
On Mac computers with the Apple silicon or the T2 security chip, Optimized Battery Charging is on by default when you set up your Mac or after updating to macOS Big Sur or later.

I just got this and the apple 27" studio display. They are both awesome. Honestly, unless you are a very light user you need the studio not the mini, imo. The fact that you can't upgrade the memory past 16gb in the mini made it.a deal breaker for me. My old iMac had 32gig (after I upgraded it) and the activity monitor routinely showed it using 16-18 gig, so having only 16 gig would be a deal breaker to me. You have to be a very light user to get by with only 16gig. My studio has the M1 max and 32 gig memory, 1 terabyte storage. Yea, it costs more but its worth it unless you just can't afford it.

Apple always put too little flash memory in their base model iPhones and Macs. I would recommend buying the base model of the Mac Studio but with 1 or 2 Tb instead of the default none upgradable 0.5 Tb of Flash memory.

the thing about the Ultra. It’s not for video. it’s not for 2d work in general. It’s for those who need 3d horsepower. Now, if you need this kind of 3d horsepower, you are just better off getting a pc, mainly because windows’ graphics api’s are just way better utilized across basically every 3d software.
this could change, but isnt likely to since software devs will need to value the mac platform to put forth the resources to take full advantage of the metal api

These are great but the big issue, and it seems to be common on the M1 chips, is how the screens re-arrange themselves on reboot if you are running more than one display. I've heard Intel Macs have this problem too but I've never seen this on my Intel machines.
I've also heard that if you use three different screens it can help as each will have a different name and serial number shown to the OS but in my testing, this doesn't help

Meh. I considered buying one but got the M1 Mini instead. These things are just too expensive, and from what I can tell, there isn't really ANY software that is fully optimized to take advantage of all the additional CPU and GPU cores...NOT EVEN Apple's OWN software like Final Cut Pro, etc. is optimized yet. Paying thousands of dollars now to get performance down the line doesn't seem like a very good tradeoff.

I traded my M1 Mac mini in for the M1 Max Mac Studio. The mini was nice, but DIRE needs more RAM than the 16GB it maxed out at. Even as, what I consider, a casual user, I was hitting low memory issues with the mini daily, which lead to various problems. The Studio I got, I went with 64GB of RAM with no regret. It needs it.
All I do with my Mac at home is really watch Twitch & the occasional CZcams video. 16GB of RAM in the Mac mini couldn't really handle even that.

People love to criticise changes and feel they have that right, but, apple has never opened up its decisions to popular consent or approval apart from the fact that if one dose t like a particular thing, one can choose not to use it or go to a competitor, it has never been driven by public opinion and never should be because we would never get anything new as people tend to like only what they are used to, we wouldn’t have smartphones if it was left to public opinion! We need people who are willing and able to think out of the box and not follow public opinion.

I'd give it a pass until Apple sorts it out.
