Why I love the Silent Patient's plot twist is that you read and read and don't get any explanation and then boom, you don't even notice the twist coming.

      I agree, **Beware, spoilers below**
I wasn’t expecting that the main protagonist was the person who killed the women’s husband. (I forgot the names, sorry xD) I was thinking that the guy, was repeating the same steps and everything that happened with his girlfriend was happening the same time as he met the girl (I was kinda dumb-). But when everything was revealed to the readers, I had a surprised face because the twist was pretty unexpected. Still kinda sad that the girl died, ngl.

Behind Her Eyes has one of my favorite twists because it COMPLETELY blindsided me. That’s the one I always recommend to someone looking for a great twist! I’m so glad you mentioned The One, because even though it didn’t have one huge twist, soooo many of its little twists made me gasp out loud or shout “NO!” or “WHAT?!”

I haven't read quite a lot of these, so I'll be checking some of them out, thanks! One book I read this year that I thought had a killer twist is 56 Days by Catherine Ryan Howard. It's set in Dublin, at the beginning of the covid lockdown. A young couple meet, quickly move in together, and then 56 days later a dead body is discovered in their apartment (this is not a spoiler; the novel opens with the discovery of the body and then jumps back and forth in time). It's a novel that slowly reveals its secrets - so it's a novel of multiple 'twists' in some ways, but one in particular, quite late in the book, absolutely took my breath away, I thought it was so cleverly done, so cleverly disguised. It's rare a twist stops me in my tracks an has me going, 'Wow!' but this one did, I thought it was done with such consummate skill. It might not hit so hard for other people, but for me I thought it was spectacularly clever, brilliantly executed, and left me filled with admiration for the author, so it's a book I definitely recommend.

    Checklist for myself:
    -Already Read:
    1. Gone Girl
    2. Behind Her Eyes
    3.The Silent Patient
    4. Local Woman Missing
    5. Confessions
    6. The One
    7. Lock Every Door
    8. The Turn Of The Key
    9. Rock Paper Scissors
    10. They Never Learn
    11. The Push
    -To Be Read:
    1. I Let You Go
P.S: For me so far The Silent Patient had me shook. When the plot twist part came, I literally had put my book aside for atleast 5-10 minutes to process everything and come back to my senses. So far I've read 50 thrillers, nothing had made me feel that way.
The only book that came close to it with an extremely absurd but satisfying plot twist was Behind Her Eyes.
Loved Rock Paper Scissors a lottt.
    Gone Girl was unpredictable too.
The Push was well-written and gripping but there wasn't really any plot twist. So disappointed with the ending.
Rest all the other thrillers that I read were predictable or not as shocking. Though all the books mentioned in this video are extremely well-written. Just my opinion.

Because I'm a book nerd who has way too many books and cannot currently justify anymore book purchases, I often look up spoilers of popular books I'm not likely to read. It's interesting because the plot twists don't often seem too shocking when you haven't read the entire book. I didn't think the plot twist in the Silent Patient was unpredictable but most likely an entirely different experience if you actually read the book

The book that I can think of reading that freaked me out the most was Nightshade by John Saul. It had an insane plot twist. I read this book while working night shift at an old hospital. The Emergency room literally was closed unless a very severely ill person came in. It reminded me of the hospital from Nightmare on elm street. It was creepy I could work the whole night and not see another human being. After reading this book it took me years to read another creepy book.
P.S. I have started reading Stolen Tongues by Felix Blackwell, thanks to you Gabby. So far it is pretty creepy. ;)

I came here for some thriller recommendations, and came away with three or four, so thanks.
My favorite plot twist of all time isn't from a thriller, but a period drama, Atonement. In a pre WW2 England summer, a precocious 12-year-old girl misinterprets a series of interactions between her sister and the sister's boyfriend, which leads to her telling a lie that ruins both their lives. The book is split into four parts, with the big twist coming at the beginning of the fourth part.
As for twists that come from a thriller, my favorite comes from Where Eagles Dare. A commando squad, led by Major Smith, is sent to parachute into a small village in Austria to infiltrate a Nazi stronghold that sits atop a mountain and is accessible only via cable car, where the general who planned D-day is being held for interrogation. The twists start in the second chapter, and come one right on top of another from about the midpoint. This is an espionage thriller, so if that genre doesn't appeal to you, this book isn't going to change your mind.
A classic thriller with a great twist is She Who Was No More by Pierre Boulle, Thomas Narcejac, and Geoffrey Sainsbury. A travelling salesman and his mistress plan to kill the salesman's wife so the two can get her life insurance money and be together. The murder mostly goes as planned, but afterward things go off the rails. The big twist comes at the very end, and it's a doozy. This book was the basis for the movie Les Diaboliques, which is one instance of the movie version being superior, so if you want the story, find a copy of the movie. The twist here is also the inspiration for what became a common horror/thriller movie trope.
For a runner up, The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith. Most people know the big twist, which occurs at about the halfway point (and, it could be argued, is really a late-occurring inciting incident) from the two movie adaptations, but if you go into it not knowing it, it's a doozy. Tom Ripley is a small-time conman hired by a wealthy man, Mr. Greenleaf, to travel to Europe and convince the man's son, Dickie, who has been living off his trust fund and avoiding any kind of work, to come home. Instead, Ripley becomes enamored of the lifestyle, and decides to hang out with Dickie, instead of bring him home.
    Again, thanks for the recommendations.

I thought the Silent Patient was super obvious. The author withheld certain information from you so stringently (in order to reveal it to you later) that it was a red flag and stood out the entire time - so much so that it became glaringly obvious why just a little way in

Until this year I was way way way more of a movie guy than a reader (since starting to change, currently on book 18 of this year). My gf was trying to get me to read more last year, and one that she tried selling to me was The Silent Patient, after reading the synopsis I guess the twist immediately within seconds and she was pissed lmao she thought I googled it 😅 but I can’t believe how many people are mind blown by it, it makes me question how “twisty” a lot of book readers recommendation are. Like some books I’ve read since I’m like if this book was a movie it just wouldn’t work in regards to pacing, twist predictability, massive conveniences etc.
A few of these recommendations are chefs kiss tho, but just thought I’d share my 2 cents

I personally read a lot of mystery/thrillers and I totally agree about Shutter Island! I'm not really sure why I picked it up because Dennis Lehane doesn't seem like an author I would usually read, but I'm so so glad that I did. With so many books I have a hard time remembering what even happened in them (including a few on this list that I read last year like The Silent Patient and The One). But Shutter Island has stuck with me even several years later because I was completely floored by it!

I recently finished the silent patient and unfortunately was not overwhelmed by the plot twist 🥲 I predicted it as soon as the ‘the unknown man’ appeared in the story and I was PRAYING I will be wrong, but alas, I wasn’t. I was so excited to read it because of the people that were shocked by the twist but
    [SPOILERS]
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
it’s literally the most common plot twist that is ‘considered’ to be shocking just because “the main character was behind it all !!” which is actually quite predictable for me now, since it’s been used soooo many times already, and not only in books but also in movies
