  • In this video, we talk about 8 mistakes we might be making with our furry friends without even realizing it! We love our pets, but we're not perfect. We can love them and at the same time be doing things that harm them simply because we think we're doing our best, but unfortunately, we're not... 😿
    But don't worry, as I've said, we're not perfect and we're always ready to learn! 😸
    I hope you enjoy the video! 💜

      It is illegal in most countries except for U.S. where this abhorrent practice was “invented” in the 1950s and remains a profitable business for unethical veterinarians. Thankfully over the last decade most Canadian provinces have now banned it as well, except for Ontario. Onychectomy for medical reasons however is still permitted.

      When I grew up, declawing cats was not uncommon. The declawed cats I came across were loved and were loving. When I became an adult, I declawed my cat. I had no reason to think it was a bad thing. Our vet of many years did not hesitate to perform the procedure but because he retired, I took my cat to another vet and they did not hesitate to perform the procedure. My cat lived to be 21 and was loved, loving, and loyal. All the declawed cats I knew of growing up and as an adult were indoor cats and were pampered. So, don't get down on people who declaw their cat, because veterinarians and the schools who taught them lead the way. You can dislike the practice but don't hate on the owner. I realize that the tide has changed. So be it. If you want to rag on something, rag on breeders and people who insist on having a particular breed of cat or dog. Hundreds of surplus cats and dogs are killed annually. FYI: I was able to help my cat live an extra few years after being diagnosed with renal disease. With the help of my vet, I got tuned in to when my cat needed subq fluids, an antibiotic, a change to her diet, etc.. This was another vet because I had moved. From the start, I learned that she did not like that I had declawed my cat, yet years later she said that I was a great cat owner. I knew how she felt about declawing and questioned her on her statement. She said that most cat owners will euthanize their cat vs doing special care for them once she tells them that their cat is in the beginning stage of renal failure. They don't want to take care of a sick cat even when the disease has yet to take a real hold. Now, that is a crime.

      @@kevinsmith4862Thank you for you post. I too grew up with all the family cats (my mother's cats and my grandmother's cats) being declawed as it was a standard back then. I'm not saying it was best for the cats because I know now that it wasn't. However, the cats I'm referring to were kept indoors and only taken outside on a leash. They were also pampered to a point of....well, you just wouldn't believe it unless you'd seen it yourself. They got all of their vaccinations on time, never, to my recollection had fleas or any other parasites, ate like little kings and queens. When one of them used the litter box (especially at my grandmother's house) it was scooped out immediately because she didn't want the other cats having to use a used litter box.... That's one of the reasons I said you wouldn't believe it unless you'd seen it yourself. And in the evening the one male cat would climb up on my grandmother's lap and she'd (not kidding) rock him to sleep. Weird but true!!!
      So all people who in the past, had their cats declawed were not cruel people, they simply didn't know any better.

    • @kevinsmith4862
      @kevinsmith4862 Před 2 měsíci

      @@tonyademond7481 😂 I did what your grandmother did regarding scooping. I view litter boxes as a place for the cats to go, not as a bank to collect their poop and urine clumps for a week. They don't want to step into their own waste. Why soil those little jellybeans unnecessarily? In 15 seconds I can scoop it clean for them. They get on a schedule and I'm trainable to get to know their schedule. One of the best types of compliments I have received on my cat ownership skills came from grumpy workmen. They have no idea that I have a cat/cats. I asked, "Why so surprised?" Their response was that they didn't smell them. They say they know a cat is in the house as soon as the front door opens. As to the cat I had declawed (my others were rescues that came to me that way) I woke up, scooped her into my arms, and with her head resting on my shoulders and her paws busy making morning biscuits, I made and drank my coffee petting her between sips.

    This 61 year old man was all choked up watching this. My beautuful Baby Girl, the best cat I've ever had, died at just 11 years old. I did SEVRRAL of these things and didn't realize it was harming her. She was alone a LOT and I didn't give her any stimulation. I gave her a ton of affection but I didn't play with her nearly as often as I could have. I knew she had very bad teeth but i thought the only option was having her teeth cleaned which was like $2500. The vet never told me about these treats, although I didn't take her in for wellness visits either. CRINGE. . She gnawed on everything she COULD....NO doubt in a lot of pain. Also, I had a pathos plant, just like the one shown. She almost died when she was 9. I later found she had chewed one of the leaves so I threw it in the garbage. They told me it was likely pancreatitis but I really think she got poisoned because she would eat plastic or anything that wasn't nailed down that would fit, including plastic. . I used scented litter and didn't clean it enough. I used to spray her with water when she clawed the furniture. She did have a large scratching post but only one. I look at those claw marks now and I don't want to get rid of the furniture BECAUSE of the clawing. She could have lived many years longer had I not been so neglectful. I know I didn't know some of this bit I could have educated myself. I could go on. She died on 12/26/2022 and I think about her Every day. I cringe at how I treated her, especially now. I'm glad I saw this for when I eventually get another. Let me tell you, the next one will be living in nirvana. In fact, I plan to get two so they have company while I'm working. At least I got to spend a lot of time with her during the pandemic because I worked from home for 2 years. I gave her a ton of love but not what she really needed It live a longer healthy life. Crying now. Thank you for this video.

      That makes me sad to hear about your guilt. As you learn more about the do's and dont's, try not to torture yourself in the process. When you get new babies, use the new information and constantly educate yourself. It's all we can do as pet parents and parents to our human children.
      Do you live anywhere near NJ? If so, I have beautiful, almost full grown kitten/cats that need a loving home. They're litter boxed trained, love to snuggle and would be amazing babies for you. I read this and didn't think badly of you, I read it and thought, wow, this person spilled their inner guilt for all to read! I've been very selective on the homes my little fur babies go to, I'd be happy to give you the opportunity to love 2 of mine.❤
      Long story short, I took in 4 young feral kittens, I didn't know they'd be Mommas. Their kittens were born last spring and I still need homes for many of them. Loving, caring fur baby parents only...

I had (no fault eviction) to move just over a year ago, and I had to take the first place offered to me (I live in the UK) by the local council, it's a flat and animals aren't allowed, so I spoke to my local councillor, he visited my old flat and then spoke to my housing officer and he, the councillor (now my hero) told my housing officer that nobody would know that there was a cat in the property, unless she actually came in to the room we were in, so she was allowed to come with me, you can imagine my relief! Declawing has another problem. Bone fragments. People will wonder why their cat is angry and lashing out. They'd lash out too if they were walking on bone shards. I read an article where a vet performed surgery on a suddenly vicious cat who was in a shelter. The article showed the fragments that had been removed and it was heartbreaking. There were so many pieces. And, of course the cat's mood increased dramatically.

    All veterinarians should be aware and tell cat owners about these dangers. I had no idea of the dangers of diffusers and scented litter. I use scented litter and deodorizer even though I clean the litter boxes at least twice a day because I have several cats. But fortunately they have no breathing problems. I do not like diffusers, and I sensed that they would be not liked by felines due to their sensitive noses, which I also have. Again, vets should all warn their customers of these dangers.

    I can attest to this 100%. As a cat owner of 3 rescue cats I did a lot of research to ensure they have the best life possible. I don't use any oils or diffusers. I have a playroom for them and scratching posts, cat trees and lots of toys plus I interactive play with them and 4 years of cats not a mark on my furniture. 3 cats and 5 litter boxes with unscented litter scooped daily. Who knew cats poop and pee this much 😆. My 1st cat was rescued from the streets and I walked him with a harness and leash for 1 year slowly weening from outside and then I got my 2nd and no more outside except vet visits. My cats have a water fountain for them and I use filtered water only and washed weekly and they like ice cubes and they drink a ton of water. They have each have different food preferences. 1 won't touch wet food if his life depends on it, 1 cat only eats wet food and 1 that likes a mix of both.

    Our first cat was indoor/outdoor and she lived to 14 (my parents got her a few years before my brother and I were born). When we got new kittens two years later, my dad screened in our porch so they could be indoor cats and also be able to go out on the porch during nice weather. Our other cats have been the same being indoor and able to enjoy going on the porch.
    We had family friends who had a cat that was declawed and she did try to lash out anytime we walked by.
    I do have a couple of plants that aren’t safe for cats, however the plants are kept in my room and my cat is not allowed in my room when I’m not in there (she’s a sprayer) so she doesn’t go near them.

      It's great to hear that you've taken measures to keep your cats safe and happy indoors while still allowing them to enjoy some outdoor time on the porch. As for the declawed cat, it's unfortunate that she exhibited aggression, which can sometimes be a side effect of declawing. It's important to provide a safe environment for our furry friends, and it sounds like you're doing a great job of that with your plants and your cat's access to certain areas of your home. 💜

    I'm 59 and I never owned a cat in my life I always had dogs. Last year we got our first rescue cat needless to say this year we got our second rescue a little black kitten he's so different from the other one who's a Russian Blue. They are both awesome but that little black cat Mort owns my heart he's so loving and fun we're getting another rescue soon it's going to be an older one because our first one is only 2 and the little kitty is 10 and a half months so we figured we would rescue one that has a lower chance of getting a home. I never knew that black cats don't get rescued as much what kind of silly religous nonsense is that and because of that the next one is going to be an older black cat.

    Thank you for this important video. I too made some mistakes with previous cats that I wish I hadn't. Now I try to do everything I can to make sure they are healthy and happy. I wanted to mention that as much fun as laser pointers are you must be careful using them. First don't let it shine in their eyes. Next if you see your cat becoming confused or aggressive discontinue it. Some cats get so frustrated that they can never physically catch it, it drives them a little crazy. I let mine see the actual pointer and they know I'm controlling it, that keeps them from being confused. When they want to play they go over to where I keep it. I haven't needed to give mine treats but that's a good idea. I wound up with 6 cats. One of the dozen homeless came inside and gifted me with three, one 3 years ago and two, 2 years ago. They have always lived indoors only. Their Momma comes inside for the winter as well as a Mother of 4 ferals. The dominant male also decided to come inside for the winter. I'm scooping constantly! All of them have been neutered or spayed except for one sneaky male. At least he won't be adding to the colony until he can get fixed.

Google double sided sticky tape or sheets for furniture and products that can keep one from declawing your cat will show up. These products will not harm your furniture and can solve a thorny issue and they are inexpensive. Please please try them before thinking about declawing your cat. Declawing is so problematic that many veterinarians will no longer preform the procedure.

    Dental is a huge issue. When I got my 1st cat he was a little over a year old and has perfect health. My 3rd cat was adopted from the shelter and she was 2 years old in perfect health. But my middle cat was a senior female fostered rescue, rescued from a horrible situation and in ok health but very bad dental. She had severe case of gingivitis and periodontal disease. She had some loose teeth and abscesses. The vet said she would be fine toothless. I was not satisfied with that answer and had her teeth cleaned with a couple extractions. A month later for a follow-up it started to come back. I went the aggressive approach having her teeth cleaned and a few extractions 3 times costing over $1,000.00 until all clear. That was 2022 now 2024 no more issues and her gums and remaining teeth are healthy. I do use a water additive and all 3 have annual dental cleanings. They have quarterly check-ups and once a year comprehensive with x-rays, blood work, vaccines, and general physical to make sure if anything pops up we catch it immediately and begin treatment. So far all 3 are perfectly healthy.

    My cat Sunshine is a rescue that was about 3 when I adopted her and I think she was abused a bit before she was allowed or caused to become a stray. I have placed several scratching posts and suchlike around the apartment but she sometimes hits my recliner. I encourage her clawing the things that I provide using catnip to try to draw her attention to these items. As far a the recliner goes, I don't even scold her, I just talk soft to her and try to distract her from clawing when she goes there. BTW, she had been at the shelter for about a month before I adopted her and having been a stray she had been given a name there that I thought was at best weird so she got renamed. So this lovely black cat with pretty gold eyes has already become the sunshine of my life which I suspected would happen when I was considering names to replace the shelter name that she had.
    My previous cat (picture used as my avatar) was a senior when I kept him from going to the SPCA shelter because the woman (his third human) couldn't continue to afford to feed him. One of his first two humans was not so human because he had been declawed. Just a bit about him here, Wally was brought into this building (an ALF and low income housing place for people over 62) as a kitten and both of his first people passed away but in both of those cases the staff found a new home for him here rather than sending him to the shelter. Sadly I had to have him put to sleep a couple of months ago because he got sick with something that couldn't be cured. He made it to age 14 and I believe that he had a good three years with me, he did give me warmth and affection during the few years we were together.
    And now this old man needs to dry the tears from his eyes before he can finish watching this video.

    Thanks for the information! It was helpful, even though I knew most of it. But some was new to me.
    I have always discouraged any one who asks me about declawing a cat. You do know that their claws can be clipped just like a dogs claws, right? Just be careful not to clip them too short! If you start clipping them early, as a kitten, just lightly clip the tips, they will be used to it and not fuss about it when they get older, unless you cut them, of course. So be careful. Or even take them to the groomers or the Vet and have their claws trimmed - not declawed!
    We have 7 1/2 cats at this time. The 1/2 is because we have a stray cat that has been coming around that we have been feeding, but he is still wild enough that he has just gotten to the point - after 6 months - that he finally let's my husband pet him a couple times while putting out his food, before Stripe (the cat of course!) moves away; he won't eat the food until my husband has moved away from it and from him.
    My oldest cat, Sweetie, is 17 years old, and I got her and her 2 siblings and their mother the day after the kittens were born (Sweetie is the only one of them left alive now). She's mostly an outside cat. Mostly, because like all of them (except one) she stays outside around the house and barn, and comes inside when the weather is really bad or wintertime is here. That one cat, Lina, is a 10 years old cat who has been blind since she was 3 weeks old. She has never spent more than 10 minutes at a time out on the porch when my husband was around to watch her [I"m handicapped and can't run after any of them]. And even at that I can count on one hand the number of times she has been out on the porch even. Lina spends most of her time sleeping in my lap, when I'm available. Except when she's being played with. I also have 3 dogs at this time. The oldest pet is, as I said, 17 years old and the youngest one is 6 years old now! Some of the pets we had when they were born or within 2-3 days of birth. Some were strays picked up and ages estimated, or even known, to range from 3 weeks to 10 months old. I can't stand to see them crying and begging for help, so end up taking them home with me! And most of the time, after I've had them for awhile, I don't want to give them away. We have had several that were dropped off on our lonely road that were very clearly abused by their crap owners! So I'm afraid to give them away - what if I give them to someone who won't be good to them? I have no way to check them out to see what kind of people they are!
    I've actually had as many as 25 pets at one time - cats and dogs together. Needless to say, we spend a lot of money on the animals each month! Good thing we live in the country with no close neighbors!

    I'm glad I saw this! I recently had a 4 year old cat that I chose to euthanize rather than have him live with meds every day & be in pain just to possibly still live a few/several more years. There was something wrong with his bile or pancreas disintegrating. Not long after that another cat nearly dying of poisoning. WHAAT??? I was stunned. I have no idea how he got poisoned! What did he eat or lick??? Racking my brains! He was given fluids & convenia to start, when that ran out I used amoxicillin I already had. Had a 2nd blood panel done. It is "normal." But I'm told he needs a third to be sure he is stabilized. Yes, convenia, helped. It brought his 106 temperature down. His appetite picked back up, he was drinking more water. He still acted a bit tired...so amoxicillin. He's doing better, I let him go outside for some fresh air, but he scratches on the door to let me know he wants back in. He never stays out long. He has always stuck close to me. I still don't know what poisoned him. This video gave me some clues. There are many More (!) things that can poison cats. Mind boggling. No seasonings on food, so careful with those table scraps! Something I have to firmly remind my husband of. I not only have to keep an eye on my cats, but my husband as well! 😦😠 Seems like I have a bunch of "2 year olds" to ride herd on some days! 😘

    My eight year old cat was basically ignored for the first five years of her life and it’s taken me the three years that I’ve had her, to try to teach her how to play -which she will now do …a bit. She loves a mouse on a line under a piece of brown paper, but she’s really not into playing much or curious on her own and I wonder if it comes from her first five years of life …
    she gets so so depressed in the winter when she can’t go outside !! and watch the squirrels all afternoon from her perch, I try to play with her every day and brush her several times /give her massages /talk to her all day long. ….Any advice for me in the winter to help her be happier. ??She doesn’t even want to sit in the window! Which is weird considering how she loves the outdoor activities and watching birds…. I swear by the beginning of March she looks at me and rolls her eyes when she sees the snow like “oh man how much longer”?…lol

    • @thulomanchay
      @thulomanchay Před 3 měsíci +2

      The scratching post need a larger base. Their feet should be on the base, or they push the post over.
      The post must be firm. A wobbly post won't do.
      The post should be broad enough they can scratch it with both their front paws together.
      Some cats are lateral scratchers, they stand on their hind legs and scratch.
      Some cats are horizontal scratchers, they scratch carpets, bedcovers, arm rest, or cardboards laid flat on the floor..
      Most don't scratch what you want them to scratch.

    In my other comment I mentioned that I recently needed a new cat in my life and adopted her from the local shelter. I didn't mention that I live on the top floor of a 13 story building. Wally my previous cat owned the balcony here that doubles as a hallway because all 10 apartments open onto this balcony. I could leave the door open and after a couple of times getting lost and going downstairs he learned that he would be carried home if he went down the stairs. He didn't like being carried more than a very short distance. I think Sunshine (my new kitty) is well on her way to being good enough about it that I will be able to leave my door open for her weather permitting. However if she does go down the stairway and gets all the way to the ground she will not be able to leave the building because there is a door that she wouldn't be able to open when she got there. Also, the building staff would be alerted to her being down there and she would be returned to my apartment if I didn't find her first. I'm considering attempting leash training, but being here in Florida I would want a harness that isn't like a jacket trapping too much heat in. Is it possible to leash train a 3 year old kitty?

    • @TheCuriousCatt
      @TheCuriousCatt  Před 2 měsíci

      Yes, it's possible to leash train a 3-year-old cat, although it might require some patience and consistency. Since Sunshine is already showing some promise in adapting to the balcony situation, she might be receptive to leash training. It's essential to choose a lightweight and breathable harness, especially considering the warmer climate in Florida. Look for harnesses specifically designed for cats that provide a comfortable fit without trapping excess heat. Start by introducing Sunshine to the harness indoors, allowing her to get used to wearing it gradually. Then, begin leash training in a safe and controlled environment, such as indoors or in a securely enclosed outdoor space. Use positive reinforcement techniques, like treats and praise, to encourage her to walk on the leash. With time and practice, Sunshine can learn to enjoy outdoor adventures safely on a leash.

      It's great that you're attentive to your cat's preferences and comfort. Using minimal soap ensures that his blankets remain familiar and comfortable for him. Cats can be sensitive to changes in their environment, so it's important to consider their preferences when caring for them. 💜

    May I add that cats can only stretch their back by digging claws into something and arching their backside. A cat is at risk when he can't stretch his back.

    Even the bowls you use for your cat to eat from can make them not eating,because of the remains off the cleaning soap! I have found out that the soap in a press bottle for your hands is better for your cat.But maybe there is even better soap for your cats bowl to clean.

    • @TheCuriousCatt
      @TheCuriousCatt  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Yes, and they also prefer wider bowls because the small ones can dirty their 'whiskers' with food and that bothers them. 💜

      Wash with baking soda and then wipe it down with white vinegar then rinse with clean water. If you have hard water use a 50/50 vinegar/water and let it soak and rinse with clean water. No soap needed.

    Vets in UK will NOT declaw cat. I use stuff that looks like large tape over
    furniture. I have 4 cats. I do not let mine out. People are extremely cruel.
    My dad told me that all animals should have another of it's kind w/ them.

    Before bringing in store flowers into your home, please research because some are poisonous! I had a black cat that was nibbling on mine, and it came down with pancreatitis, n nearly died.
    Even yard plants are poisonous, well some...research before you lose your cat.

    Great video! EXCEPT, I'm not a fan of laser pointers; they put your cats eyes at risk of serious, non reversible eye damage... including blindness. Use a fishing pole toy instead. 👍

      My water fountain from Amazon quit after one week. China quality again. In that first week though, my 5 rescue cats would not get near the fountain and kept drinking out of the stainless steel bowls i had out for them. i would not advise getting a fountain after that.

      Cat fountains definitely has increased my cats water intake. A bit expensive but worth it in health benefits. I also add some water to their wet food to sneak a bit more water in their diet.

    I agree with not declawing cat

  • @Shisimocha3
    @Shisimocha3 Před 2 měsíci +1

    Declawing is cruel, and it is mutilation. It is the removal of not only the claw, but the first joint of the toe 😮. It would be like someone cutting off your toe at the joint nearest your nail. Wouldn't that affect how you walk? Of course it would. Many, if not all vets in my city don't even offer that service. Don't do it, people. Cats can be taught not to scratch anything if you provide a scratching post. It just takes patience on the human's part to train them. But they are smart, they can learn.

    Thank you for your wonderful, informative videos, however, I totally disagree with indoor cats living significantly longer than outdoor cats.
    My two have been born, raised and lived on farms and despite the odd mishap outdoors, they are lively, healthy and strong. One is turning 14 this year, the other 15.
    They have a cat door and come and go as they please - having the best of both worlds.

    • @TheCuriousCatt
      @TheCuriousCatt  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 💜 As for outdoor cats living shorter lives, that's a statistic. There's a higher probability of a cat dying outdoors than indoors for the reasons I mentioned in the video. I've personally known cats that lived a long time with outdoor access, but they are the exception rather than the rule, and that's what I said in the video. I didn't say that outdoor cats will definitely die earlier, but rather that it's more likely because it's more dangerous. I hope that clears it up. 💜

    Awesome video... Thank you! Some of what the alerts you mentioned I was already aware of as being dangerous but your explanation as to why and what can happen really brought it home. I don't have a cat but would like to get one, or even a pair as I live alone and would love to share my home space in return for the company. I am a pensioner with some mobility issues (prosthetic knees and chronic back woes) so I'm generally always at home and as I don't drive doing sports and shopping usually means I'm out for hours so perhaps bringing two cats into my space would be better let them be company for each other when i do have to be out for the day. I'm a Leo born in a Year of the Tiger so... double cat... I've have always loved cats. Love dogs too but simply no longer have the strength and energy it takes to take proper care of them. If I had kids in the house who could help walk them the exuberance and energy of dogs would be welcome but at my age and living alone I think I would enjoy more the serenity of cats' quiet companionship. All that said may i all of there are some breeds you would recommend over others as better for me to look for and why?

      Skip the high energy breeds & kitten stage. I have been "presented" with several Russian Blues, mixed breed I am thinking. When young, Whew, very high energy. Those three girls...On The Go, top speed! I named one PingPong, the other Birdie. The youngest 2 are very wired & quick as lightning! The older one I named Velvet because of her silvery gray fur. She has calmed down a bit since her youth. All 3 are/were my "skinny girls." Their eyes are either gold or green.

    • @TheCuriousCatt
      @TheCuriousCatt  Před 3 měsíci

      Thank you for your kind words! Considering your circumstances, a pair of cats would indeed provide each other with companionship when you're away. In terms of breeds, Ragdolls, British Shorthairs, and Persians are known for their calm and gentle nature, making them great companions for someone who values serenity and quiet. However, it's essential to consider individual personalities rather than just breed characteristics when choosing a cat. Visit local shelters or rescue organizations to meet different cats and see which ones connect with you the most. Adoption is always a wonderful option, and you may find the perfect feline companions regardless of breed. 💜
