    Today we jump back to a week before Christmas 1965!
    Here is yet another song on Bandstand that is brand new and certainly not a hit yet. It’s always interesting to me seeing the kids dancing to classic songs like this (and many others) and realizing that this is probably the 1st time they have ever heard it.
    As “Richard” Clark mentions, Lou Christie is back in the spotlight today after ”many hits in a row” (”The Gypsy Cried”, #24 in ’62 and ”Two Faces Have I”, #6 in ’63) and a 2 year stint in the army. “Lightnin’ Strikes” will enter the charts next week at #93 and on Feb. 19, 1966, which was Lou’s 23rd birthday, it will hit #1.
    In the studio: Watch for a rare, quick glimpse of the giant ABC camera at 3:02. (dancing with that monster right up in your face is not for the faint of heart, lol) The Regulars spotted dancing today are: Frank Vanderpuil on the riser (1:28), Anita Prince & Famous Hooks (1:37), Norman Mull (’67 Dance Contest at 1:51), Steve Schreiner (roll call and 2:32). Theodosia Dayton (3:18), and Peggy Waggoner dancing next to Debbie Sewell (3:28.) Incidentally, this is the earliest footage I have of everyone I just mentioned except for Famous Hooks.
    …..And with Christmas right around the corner, the biggest selling toys are “G.I. Joe Action Soldiers”, Tonka Trucks and the game “Operation” which had just been introduced this year. On Christmas morning, engineer Sherman Poppen of Muskegon, Michigan, created a toy for his kids to play in the snow by fastening 2 skis together so they could ride it like a surfboard. The next year Poppen sold the rights to his invention to the Brunswick Corporation, a company that made bowling equipment. Brunswick refined it and added lamination used on the wood in bowling lanes and…..the Snowboard was born.

    I mentioned to a subscriber of YCDTI last night that I have a massive case of 80 an year old Down Under version of limerence (a pointless AND irrational crush) on Peggy Waggoner, as well as Kathy McInerny. The Light In MY Darkness (in a 42 plus year relationship) is a kinda cross between those two. The dazzling smiles get me all the time. CZcams now keeps suggesting these clips, which is kinda spooky. Not that I mind, of course...🤩😍

    Thanks to the color Van Morrison ep from '67, I can imagine what this set looked like. So we know that the curtain backdrop is blue, and the "ab" letters on the big circle are a light blue. During this era, I always laugh when Dick introduces a song, and all the kids are just sitting there looking around like "do we get up or what?". Then when they do get up, it takes them forever to start dancing, and the song is almost over by then! Lol I'm glad they did away with that prom/school dance format, and just had the kids out there on the floor ready when the music starts. I always felt that Frankie Valli would have killed this song, but Lou did great, it's a classic! Another great clip Aaron, thanks!

      That’s actually a really good point Thruthealcove KC. I assume the set colors are the same as the ‘67 color episode with the dark blue curtain and powder blue podium and round logo sign, but I’m not sure about that. That’s how i imagine it too. Great thought!

    • @thruthealcove
      @thruthealcove Před 5 lety +2

      Right. The color episode I was referring to with Van Morrison aired on November 11, 1967, and it was apart of VH1's Best Of American Bandstand series back in the mid 90s. That's how I'm able to "guess" that the set here has the same colors as the following seasons up until September of '69 when everything changed, including the infamous AB logo that was used all the way until 1989!

      I was a junior in High school then. The problem Juan, is that today, I'm a old man. I still know what a pretty girl looks like, but, I'm not supposed to look at them. I have no record, but if I try to just talk to a girl that age, I'm branded a pervert. Somehow, I can't imagine myself dancing with an old gal 100 pounds over what she weighed back then. I danced a lot during that time, with girls that would let you "lead" the dance, as men are supposed to. Today, the ones my age, lead me !!!!.
