Matanuska Glacier: Hiking on a Glacier near Anchorage

  • Matanuska Glacier is a 27-mile long glacier that is about an hour and a half north of Anchorage. The glacier is the largest of its kind that is accessible by car in the USA. My dad and I set out to hike on the glacier with a guided tour in June 2021. We had a blast learning about the science behind glaciers and getting to explore such a beautiful area with microspikes. Be sure to visit if you are in the area, and let me know what you think in the comments.

My girlfriend and me went to this glacier in the late seventies. We were awe struck . Thank you for your video as it has brought back some very fond memories. I would love to go back with my husband so he could experience the awesomeness and beauty. Thank you again.💖

Yes it has changed a lot. It was bigger but the fact that it’s still there and is being watched over and has a guide to take you to it is still awesome and something I would like to do again.

Just a reminder. The glacier isnt privately owned, the access road you used us. And the tour company leases that private drive and access. But Beautiful none the less.

Awesome video. Loved it!! When we had been there in 2019, there was a self guided tour as well which was lot more fun than the guided tour we took the previous day. In Guided tour they really showed us very limited area in the glacier. If you go on a self guided tour you can explore much more and even see the ice caves and will not be restricted by your tour guide. But you have to be careful on self guided tour though.

I was just here last week! We did the Lion's Head Hike instead of going onto the actual glacier though. The trail is a bit informal, but the views into the valley are stunning. Great video, it's cool to see the glacier up close like that.

F do I’d the guide talk about glacial flour, the murky and milky appearance of the glacial water? I love the blue tinge to glaciers and glacier fed waters like in glsvier national park. What a glorious hike. How awesome that you got to see a moose! Amazing !

In the end probably a good thing so it gets protected and preserved as best as possible while people still get to visit. It's like a zoo for frozen moving water 😊

    • @loganhartley7718

No one owns the glacier. There’s only one access point to walk on the glacier which is privately owned so they charge to get to it
